I blew up something good by testing it

AFTER THE FACT  /  PATTERN: The Testing Pattern

The test ran and it got answered. Not the way it was supposed to, and you watched yourself set it up, and you could not stop it while it was happening.

This page is not going to rule on whether you deserved what happened. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, if you want it, what the test was asking.

    The next ten minutes

Do not set another one. That is the actual risk in the next hour, and it will not look like a test: it will look like checking whether they are still angry, or sending one more message, or asking a question you already know the answer to.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Put the phone somewhere it takes a decision to reach. Not off, not hidden. Across a room.

If something has to be said tonight, say the plain version once and then stop: I pushed and I know I pushed. I am not asking you to answer that now.

Do not ask whether they still want to be here. That question is the sequence, and asking it tonight will get an answer neither of you can trust.

Then leave it until you have slept. Nothing about this improves between eleven and three, and the version of you awake at three is the one that sets the next one.

Why the answer you got is worthless

Because a test measures what happens under a load you applied. If they stayed, you learned that they stay under a load you applied, which the sequence discounts on arrival. If they left, you learned what happens when somebody is pushed, which is not information about how they felt before you pushed.

That is the design flaw and it is in every version of this. The question underneath was never whether they cared. It was when they stop, and there is no answer to that question that settles it, which is why passing one has always produced a larger one six weeks later.

The test got its answer and the answer was worthless. That is not your failure. It is the design.

    What was actually running

A fast, high charge in the chest, three to seven seconds before the push. Not dread. Closer to the moment before a question gets asked out loud, which is precisely what it was.

And check when it fired. In most accounts it follows a good stretch rather than a bad one, because a good stretch raises the position and gives it further to fall. The better it got, the more urgent it became to find out what it was made of.

    What is left

Depends what happened, and this page is not going to guess. If they are still here, the useful thing is not a promise. It is one plain sentence tomorrow, said once, naming the thing as a sequence rather than as a personality: I do this, I know I do it, and I am working on the moment before it.

If they are not, then what is left is the sequence itself, which is portable and will be here for the next person. That is a hard sentence and it is the honest one, and it is also the reason tonight is worth something rather than nothing.

    What tonight actually is

An entry. Filed after the fact, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.

There is no shame register here and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. The next fast heart is the one available to you, and asking the question in words instead of in evidence is what goes there.

The full file on this sequence, including the marker that starts it, is at /patterns/why-do-i-test-people-who-love-me when you want it. It will keep.

Why do I test people who love me?
