FILE: ARCH-AFT-036  /  STATUS: ACTIVE

I cheated on my wife and she left without saying anything

Leave her silence alone tonight, and read the next ten minutes first.

AFTER THE FACT  /  PATTERN: Success Sabotage

She is gone, and she said nothing. You cheated, she knows, and the door closed without a word. Now the house is quiet, and you are reading this instead of sleeping.

Nothing on this page will tell you what kind of husband you are. That is a verdict and this is a record. Nothing here will tell you what she will do, either. Read the next ten minutes first. The rest can wait.

    The next ten minutes

One thing comes before everything else on this page. If tonight has gone somewhere darker than the marriage, if you are thinking about not being here, talk to a person now.

    In the United States:

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.

    Emergency services: 911.

You do not have to be sure it counts to use them. Nothing on this page is a substitute for a person.

If that is not where you are, here is the whole of the next ten minutes. It is smaller than you want it to be.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Do not call her again and again. Do not drive to where you think she is.

Do not send the long message. If you send anything tonight, send one line that asks for nothing: I know. You do not have to answer.

Do not ask her friends or family where she is or what she said.

Put the phone in another room. Drink some water. Do not drink to get through the night.

Write down the one thing you would say if you were allowed one sentence. Do not send it.

What her silence is, and is not

Her silence is hers. It is not a code for you to crack tonight, and it is not a message you can answer by sending more of your own.

You will want to read it. Does no word mean it is over? Does it mean she is waiting? Stop there. Nobody can read it from where you are, and every reading you try ends in the same place: the phone in your hand.

The silence is not yours to fill. Leaving it alone is the one thing you can give tonight.

Why it felt like something you watched happen

This is not an excuse, and it does not move any of this onto her. You chose it. Still, it may not have felt like a decision while it was happening. It felt like a series of small steps, each with a reason.

For some, the sequence underneath is Success Sabotage, the pattern that burns down a good thing just as it starts to work. It does not arrive as a wish to ruin anything. It arrives as good judgment. Its body signal, what you feel as it starts, is a scan for what is wrong during a good stretch.

The window is the few seconds between that signal and the next small step. It is about three to seven seconds, a working figure and not a measured one. That window is where any change lives. Not tonight. Later.

What to say if she gives you the chance

That chance is hers to give, on her timing. Do not try to make it come sooner. If it does come, the shortest true thing is the one to say.

    [REWRITE FRAME]

I did this. It was mine. It was not about anything you did.

I am not asking you for anything right now.

Then stop. No explanation, no but, and no list of what was wrong between you first.

The long explanation is almost always doing a job for you rather than for her. Leave it out.

What to do with the guilt

Part of the guilt is pointing at something true. You hurt someone you made a promise to. Keep that part. It is accurate, and it is the reason to look at the sequence later.

The other part says you are a bad man, all the way through. That is a verdict, and there is nowhere in this archive to file one. It also does not help her. Going over it all night pays nothing back.

You do not have to feel better before you do the next useful thing. The next useful thing is small. Eat something. Lie down, even if you do not sleep.

What do I do now that I cheated on my wife and she left without saying anything?

Less than you want to. Leave her silence alone. Do not chase, do not explain, and do not ask anyone to tell you what she is thinking. Keep yourself safe tonight, and talk to a person if it gets dark. Eat, drink water and lie down. Tomorrow, write down the small steps that came before this, as plainly as you can. That record is yours to work on, whatever she decides.

    What tonight actually is

An entry. Filed after the fact, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.

There is no shame register here and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. Tonight is not the whole record of you or of the marriage. The sequence underneath it still has a signal, and it can still be caught. That work does not depend on anyone else.

The full file on this sequence, including where the scan can be caught, is at /patterns/why-do-i-sabotage-myself-when-things-go-well when you want it. It will keep.

Why do I sabotage myself when things are going well?

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
