I feel like I have ruined my life
Do the next ten minutes first. They are below.
AFTER THE FACT / PATTERN: Success Sabotage
Tonight the damage feels total and permanent. Something went. A job, a relationship, a chance, money, or years. Your mind has added it all up into one sentence, and the sentence is about your whole life.
This page will not argue with the feeling, and it will not agree with the sentence. That is a verdict and this is a record. Read the next ten minutes first. Leave the rest until you want it.
The next ten minutes
One thing comes before everything else. If ruined has started to mean you do not want to be here, or you have thought about hurting yourself, stop reading and talk to a person now.
In the United States:
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
Calling is not an overreaction, and it commits you to nothing. A person tonight comes before this page.
If that is not where you are, here is the whole of the next ten minutes. It is small on purpose.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Write down what actually happened, in one sentence, with no adjectives. I lost the job. I ended it. I spent the savings.
Under it, write what is still true tomorrow morning. Where you will sleep. Who you could call. What is due this week.
Then stop. Make no decision about your whole life tonight. Do not quit, leave, or send anything before morning.
The sentence about a ruined life is not a fact. It is a total. A total made at night counts every loss and leaves out what is still standing.
What the word ruined is doing
Ruined is a word for something that cannot be used again. A life does not work like that. A life is a long record, and entries are still being added to it, including tonight's.
What you have is a loss, and it may be a large one. A large loss is real and worth taking seriously. It is still one entry. The word ruined takes one entry and stamps it on the whole file.
The sentence is about all of you. The event is about one part of one year.
Why it felt out of your control
If what went was something that had started to work, look at the timing. A job that finally fit. A relationship that got good. Savings that had started to grow. Then a run of small decisions, each with a sensible reason, and then the ending.
That shape has a name in this archive. It is Success Sabotage, the pattern that undoes good things as they start to work. It does not arrive as a wish to fail. It arrives as good judgment.
It starts in the body. The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts: a tightening in the chest, a restless charge, a quick scan for what is wrong. Three to seven seconds later, a reason to step back appears. That stretch is the window, the few seconds before the behavior. It is a working figure, not a measured one.
I feel like I have ruined my life
That feeling is a reading of tonight. It was taken at the worst hour, about the biggest loss in view. Take it seriously as a feeling. Do not take it as a ruling. Write the loss in plain words. Then write what is still here. Both lists are true, and only one of them is loud right now.
Why do I feel like I am ruining my life?
Because the pattern runs in small steps, and each step looks reasonable. You notice the total, not the steps. If you can feel it happening now, slowly, that is useful. A sequence you can feel while it runs is one you can interrupt. Watch for the tightening when something goes well. Then wait before you act on the next sensible reason to step back.
What do I do when I feel like my life is ruined?
Make the next week smaller, not your whole life. Sleep, eat, and keep the plans already in the calendar. Make no large decision for seven days. Then pick one thing the loss touched and take one practical step on it. Call the bank. Answer the email. Ask one person for help. A step is something you can take. A whole life is not.
I hate the life I created
Hating it means you can see it clearly, and seeing it is a start. Notice the word created, though. It puts all of it on you. Some of it was yours. Some of it was the pattern. Some of it was luck, timing and other people. Sort those before you pass sentence on yourself.
The part that was the pattern is the part you can work on. It does not need solving tonight. Tonight it needs one late entry: the sentence, the short list, and sleep.
What to do with the guilt
Part of the guilt is accurate. Something you cared about is gone, and some of the moves that ended it were yours. Keep that part. It is the reason to learn the sequence.
The other part says you are a person who ruins things. That is a verdict, and there is nowhere in this archive to file one. You do not have to settle it tonight. Put it down until morning.
What tonight actually is
An entry. A heavy one, filed late, after the sequence ran. A record accepts late entries. It does not close the file because of one.
There is no shame register here and nowhere to file a verdict. Tonight is for one plain sentence, one short list, and sleep. The rest of the record is not written yet.
