I helped again and nobody said thank you
Do the next ten minutes first. They are below.
AFTER THE FACT / PATTERN: The Draining Bond
You helped again and nobody said anything. The lift got given, the plates got cleared, the thing got fixed, and the room moved on as if the room had done it. You are sitting with that now, and it is not the first time.
This page is not going to tell you that you are a doormat. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, if you want it, what the missing thank you is actually measuring.
The next ten minutes
Start with the thing you are about to do, which is the accounting. Put it down for tonight. The list of everything you have done for them, with dates, is being assembled right now, and that is the pattern working, not you working.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Do not send the message. The one that starts with I just think it would be nice if, or ends with but never mind. It is a bill, and it is addressed to someone who never opened an account.
Do not go cold either. Silence is the same bill, delivered by hand.
Instead, write one line for yourself, nowhere they can see it: I did this. I wanted that back. Nobody agreed to that.
Then eat something. The resentment keeps overnight. It does not need you to sit up with it.
If you want to say something to them, say it tomorrow, and read the section on it first. Tonight it would come out as the bill, and the bill is not the part of you that helped.
What the missing thank you is measuring
A gift does not wait for a receipt. A job does. The help went out before anyone asked for it, and the fee was set afterward, in private, by the part of you that was keeping score. That is what makes tonight hurt in the specific way it hurts.
This is The Draining Bond. You were not helping. You were working, at a job that was handed to you early: keeping the state of the room level, so nobody in it went flat. The thank you is the only pay that job has ever issued, and it was never in the contract, because there was never a contract.
The thank you is not what you were owed. It is the only wage the job ever paid, and nobody else knew you were on shift.
Nothing here says whether they are grateful. That sits in their record, and you cannot read it from here. What sits in yours is that you were standing up before the need was spoken, and that is the part worth looking at.
Why it felt like you had no choice
Because you did not make one. The body signal is what you feel as the sequence starts. Here it is the weight: a heaviness across the shoulders and upper back when their need appears, before any ask, sometimes before any words.
Three to seven seconds after the weight, you are on your feet. Those few seconds are the window: the space between the weight and the standing up. Nothing has been done yet inside it, and that is the only place this can be caught.
The resentment lives on the other side, hours later, where the help has already landed. That is why being sick of it has changed nothing at the next plate. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.
What to say tomorrow, if anything
Wanting to be thanked is a reasonable thing to want. Asking to be thanked is a poor thing to ask for, because it hands them a job, and the whole problem is jobs nobody agreed to. The useful move is not a sentence. It is a wait.
[REWRITE FRAME]
Next time the weight arrives, count to five before you stand up. If they ask, help. If they do not ask, stay sitting.
If you want to say something, once, on a calm day: I notice I jump in before anyone asks. I am going to wait to be asked. If I seem slower, that is why.
Then leave it there. No request attached. Catching the weight is your job, and it is the only one on this page.
Rewrite is repeating that different action until it is easier to reach. A late catch still counts. Sitting back down halfway to the sink is a repetition. Letting one thing stay undone for an hour is a repetition. The five seconds get easier to find each time the weight returns.
What to do with the sick-of-it feeling
Part of it is pointing at something true. You are tired, and the tiredness is accurate. Running your own life and a second job that nobody counts is heavy, and the body has been keeping that record even when you were not.
The other part says you are becoming a bad person, bitter, the kind who keeps score. That is a verdict, and there is nowhere in this archive to file one. Keeping score was never the problem. The score was being kept by a program, on a job it invented.
You do not have to settle whether they deserve you before you do the next useful thing. The next useful thing is small. Drink some water, sleep, and put the ledger down until morning. Going over the years of it tonight pays nothing back. It is load, and load lowers the threshold for the next weight.
What tonight actually is
An entry. Filed after the fact, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.
There is no shame register here and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. The next weight is the one available to you, and five seconds of sitting still is what goes there.
