I lost my temper with my partner again
Do the next ten minutes first. They are below.
AFTER THE FACT / PATTERN: The Rage Pattern
You shouted at someone you love again. It was not the first time, and you saw it land. Now the house is quiet in the wrong way, and you are reading this in another room.
Nothing on this page is going to tell you what kind of partner you are. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, only if you want it, what to do with the guilt.
The next ten minutes
One thing comes before everything else on this page. If it went past words, if you grabbed, pushed or threw something, if you stood where they could not get past you, or if they looked afraid of you, stop reading and talk to a person today.
If you are the one who is afraid in this house, these numbers are for you too.
In the United States:
The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.
Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.
Emergency services: 911.
Ringing is not an admission of anything. Nothing on this page is a substitute for a person, and it is not more urgent than one.
If that is not where you are, here is the whole of the next ten minutes. It is smaller than you want it to be.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
If the heat is still up, leave the room for twenty minutes. Cold water on the wrists. Do not follow them to settle anything.
When the heat is gone, say one short sentence at an ordinary volume: I shouted at you. That was mine, not yours. I am sorry.
Then stop. No explanation, no but, and no list of what they said first.
Do not ask them to tell you it is all right. That gives them a second job tonight: getting through it, and looking after you.
If they want room, give it. Room is something you can give tonight, and giving it takes nothing from you. If they are asleep, leave the sentence until morning.
What you can see it doing to them
You may have noticed them changing. Quieter in the evenings. Careful with how they ask things. Watching your face before they speak.
Believe what you see. Do not argue with it, explain it away, or ask them to stop showing it. It is the plainest record of what the heat has cost in this house.
Their carefulness is not an accusation. It is information, and it is pointing at the seconds before the heat.
Those seconds are the one part of this that sits in your body and not in theirs. That is why they are worth your attention more than anything you could say tonight.
Why it felt out of your control
Because the heat came before the words. It rose through the chest and neck, the jaw set, and three to seven seconds later the shouting had started. By the time you could have chosen, your body was already moving.
That is not an excuse, and it does not make the shouting theirs. It tells you where the work is. Not in the sentence. In the heat, which arrives first every time.
The body signal is what you feel as the sequence starts, and this pattern has the loudest one of the nine. Nobody has to guess whether the heat is happening.
What to tell them tomorrow
Not a promise that it will never happen again. A promise is a sentence about the future, and they have heard it before. Give them a plan for the next time instead.
[REWRITE FRAME]
Once, on a calm day, in an ordinary voice:
When I feel the heat, I am going to say I need twenty minutes and leave the room. If I do that, I am working on it, not walking out.
Then leave it there. Do not ask them to agree, to rate it, or to remind you. Catching the heat is your job.
Rewrite is repeating that different action until it is easier to reach. A late catch still counts. Leaving after the first sharp sentence, instead of after the tenth, is a repetition.
What to do with the guilt
Part of the guilt is pointing at something true. What you said landed on someone you love. Keep that part. It is accurate, and it is the reason to work on the heat.
The other part says you are a bad partner, or a bad person. That is a verdict, and there is nowhere in this archive to file one.
You do not have to feel forgiven, by them or by yourself, before you do the next useful thing. The next useful thing is small. Eat something, drink some water, sleep, and put the trial down until morning.
Going over it all night does not pay anything back. It is load, and load lowers the threshold for tomorrow evening, which is the one you are trying to change.
What tonight actually is
An entry. Filed after the fact, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.
There is no shame register here and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. Tonight is not the whole record of the two of you. The next time the heat rises is the one available to you, and twenty minutes is what goes there.
The full file on this sequence, including where the heat can be caught, is at /patterns/why-do-i-get-so-angry-over-small-things when you want it. It will keep.
