    I took the lower number

AFTER THE FACT  /  PATTERN: Compliment Deflection

The number came out lower than decided. You had a figure written down, you heard yourself say a different one, and then you took ten percent off it before anybody had objected to anything.

This page is not going to rule on whether you are bad at business. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, if you want it, what happened in the two seconds before the number.

    The next ten minutes

Check whether it is actually fixed. A number said out loud is not always a number agreed, and the sequence has a strong interest in you treating the two as the same thing.

    [REWRITE FRAME]

If nothing is signed and no work has started, one line, sent before you improve it: I gave you a figure off the top of my head and it was too low. The rate is X.

No apology longer than the sentence. No explanation of the mistake. Reasons invite a negotiation and the sequence is on the other side of it.

If it is genuinely fixed, then it is fixed for this one only. Write the correct number down tonight, in a calm hour, so it exists before the next conversation does.

Then stop working on it tonight. The hollow week is coming either way and it is not improved by an evening of accounting.

What happened in the two seconds before the number

Heat, up the neck and into the face, at the moment a figure had to be said out loud. It arrived before the sentence rather than after it, which is why the sentence felt like something that happened rather than something you chose.

And the drop that followed is the sequence completing itself. Ten percent off, in the same breath, before any objection. That is not a negotiation. Nobody was negotiating yet.

The discount left your mouth before the price did. That is a reflex, not a decision about money.

Why a number is harder than a compliment

Because it is the same move with a receipt attached. Saying a rate is a claim that your work has a value, and holding it means standing in a room while somebody assesses that claim. That is the exact condition this sequence exists to end.

Which is why it fires hardest with the clients you like most, and hardest of all when the work went well. The better the regard, the more exposed the number is.

    The hollow week is information

It will arrive in a few days: flat, resentful, disproportionate to the money involved. It is not about the client and it is not a sign that you have been cheated.

It is the clearest measurement available of what the drop actually cost, and it is the one nobody counts. Write down that it happened. In three months that record is worth more than any resolve you make tonight.

    What tonight actually is

An entry. Filed after the number, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.

There is no shame register here and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. The next time a figure has to be said, the move is two parts: say the number, and stop talking. The silence after it is not yours to fill.

    Why can't I take a compliment?
