    I went back again

AFTER THE FACT  /  PATTERN: Attraction to Harm

You went back and you know it. You are not reading this because you need it explained. You are reading it because of what you think it means about you.

This page will not rule on that. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, if you want it, what the pull was made of.

    The next ten minutes

One thing comes before everything else here, and it is not about patterns. If you are not safe where you are, that is the only question that matters tonight.

In the United States: the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. They take calls from people who have gone back, routinely, and going back is not something you have to explain or account for to them. Emergency services: 911.

Most people leave and return several times before it is final. That is the ordinary shape of it rather than a failure, and the people on that number know it better than anybody.

If that is not where you are, here is the next ten minutes and it is small.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Do not make a decision tonight. Not to stay, not to leave. Decisions made in the first day after going back are made by the same thing that took you back.

Do not tell anybody yet if you do not want to. The account you would give tonight would be a defence, and defences get believed and then have to be lived up to.

Write down one sentence for yourself, unsent, unshown: what you actually want, in plain words, with nobody's opinion in it. Then put it somewhere you will find it in a calm week.

What the pull was made of

Recognition rather than assessment. The pull reports that something is familiar, not that it is good, and a system trained on certain conditions produces a very strong signal when it meets them again.

That signal is stronger after a separation, not weaker, which is the part nobody warns people about. The gap makes the return more compelling rather than less, and by the time the reasoning turns up it is working on behalf of a decision that has already been made somewhere else.

Going back is not evidence about your judgment. It is evidence about what your body reads as home.

    The people you told

This is usually the loudest part of the shame and it is worth separating from the rest. Telling people was not a promise. It was you saying a true thing at a moment when you could say it.

You do not owe anybody an update on a timetable. If somebody has to be told, the whole of it can be one sentence: I am back, I am not asking you to be pleased about it, and I would like you to still be reachable.

The friends worth having will take that. The ones who need you to have been right the first time are asking for something that was never on offer.

Why this is not a relapse

Because that word imports a frame this archive does not use, in which there is a clean state and a fallen one, and returning means starting again from zero.

Nothing here works that way. What you learned about the pull did not un-learn itself when you went back. The record still holds every entry made before tonight, and this is one more entry rather than a deletion of the others.

    What tonight actually is

An entry. Filed late, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts, and there is no shame register in this archive and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed.

Nothing on this page is telling you to leave and nothing is telling you to stay. That is yours, and it will be a better decision in a calm week than it would be tonight.

The full file on this sequence, including where the pull can be caught, is at /patterns/why-am-i-attracted-to-people-who-hurt-me when you want it. It will keep.

Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?
