I yelled at my child and I feel sick
AFTER THE FACT / PATTERN: The Rage Pattern
You are sitting somewhere feeling physically sick. It is in the stomach and the chest, and it arrived after the volume did, and it is the reason you are reading a page instead of sleeping.
Nothing on this page is going to tell you what kind of parent you are. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, only if you want it, what happened.
The next ten minutes
One thing comes before everything else on this page. If it went physical, if you grabbed harder than you meant to, if something got thrown in a room they were in, or if you are frightened of what you might do on a bad night, stop reading and talk to a person today.
In the United States: Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, call or text 1-800-422-4453. It is staffed around the clock and it is used by parents ringing about themselves. 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988. Crisis Text Line, text HOME to 741741. Emergency services: 911.
Ringing is not an admission of anything. Nothing on this page is a substitute for a person, and it is not more urgent than one.
If that is not where you are, here is the whole of the next ten minutes, and it is smaller than you want it to be.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Drink some water and eat something, even if you do not want either. The threshold you crossed was physical and it is still low.
If they are asleep, leave it until morning. Waking a sleeping child to repair something is for you rather than for them.
If they are awake and it is close enough to the event, go in and say one short sentence at normal volume. I was too loud. That was not about you. I am sorry.
Then stop. Do not explain, do not build the case, and do not ask them to say it is all right. A child asked to absolve a parent has been given a job.
That is the entire repair and it is enough. Children read the return far more accurately than they read the apology, and coming back into the room at an ordinary volume is the return.
What the sickness actually is
It is the gap between two states. The person doing the accounting now is not the system that was driving during the event, and looking at what you said from outside the state that produced it is genuinely disorienting.
Which is also why the exact words are hard to reconstruct. There is less there to recall than you expect, because the fast path reached your mouth well before the slow path reached language.
The sickness is not evidence about your character. It is what it feels like to be outside a state you were just inside.
Why the replay at two in the morning makes tomorrow worse
Because it is load, and load is what lowers the threshold. Going over it for four hours does not produce a better parent by the morning. It spends the supply the morning was going to need.
This is the most counterintuitive thing in the whole file and it is worth stating plainly. Self-punishment after an episode is fuel. It feels like accountability, and it reads to the body as continued strain, and it makes the next one arrive faster and from a smaller distance.
So the useful instruction tonight is the one that sounds least like penance. Stop the accounting, and do the ordinary things that raise a threshold: eat, drink, sleep, and put the review down until you have done all three.
If you want the mechanism, it is short
The size of the response was not set by the event. It was set by a threshold, and thresholds are physical. They drop with tiredness, with hunger, with noise that has run all day, with being needed continuously by somebody who has every right to need you.
The heat arrived first, up through the chest and neck, with the jaw setting, three to seven seconds before the first word. Everything you would call a decision turned up after that, already moving.
None of that makes the volume somebody else's. It makes it a sequence rather than a character, and a sequence has a place in it where it can be caught. That place is the heat, and it is available tomorrow.
What tonight actually is
An entry. That is the honest description and it is not a softening: a record that accepts a late entry is doing an ordinary administrative thing, and a file in this archive accepts one at any point.
There is no shame register here and there is nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. Tonight is not the thing that decides who you are to them. The next ordinary Tuesday is worth more than tonight, and there is one tomorrow.
The full file on this sequence, including where it can be caught, is at /patterns/why-do-i-get-so-angry-over-small-things when you want it. It will keep.
