The Subtle Art, and the call you still pick up

Read the big idea first. Then read the gap, and try the one move at the end.

The book asks you to choose what you care about. A pattern can pull you back after you choose.

    THE BOOK

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, Mark Manson, 2016.

This page reads the book's main idea in our own words. It quotes no text from the book and speaks for no one who wrote it.

This book is about choosing what matters. It argues that you have only so much care to give, so spend it on purpose.

This page states its big idea fairly, says what it gets right, and names one gap. It quotes nothing from the book.

    The big idea, stated fairly

Every life has problems. The book says the real question is which problems you choose to live with.

You cannot care about everything. So pick a few values that are worth the cost, and let the rest go.

It splits fault from duty. Something may not be your fault and still be yours to deal with.

It also values saying no. Turning some people and things down is what gives a choice its meaning.

    What it gets right

It is right that trying to please everyone costs a lot. It is right that a clear value makes a hard choice easier.

It is right that a good life has pain in it. Picking which pain you keep is a fair way to see it.

    The gap it leaves

Choosing your values is slow work. A pattern fires in a moment.

You can decide a bond costs too much and still answer the call. You still say yes, and go back.

The Draining Bond is the name for that pull. You know the choice is made, and your body has not heard.

Caring less is a choice you make once. The pull shows up again each time the phone lights up.

    Where Behavioral Interception fits

Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.

It works in the second the phone lights up. First you feel the body signal, a stomach drop or tight throat, and name the pattern.

Then take one different action, such as waiting an hour before you reply. Repeat it each time the signal comes back.

Keep the book for your values. Use practice for the moment they get tested.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
