    The first domino

    REFERENCE: ONE TERM

The first domino is the earliest marker in a given pattern's body signature, named on each file so the reader knows exactly which signal to wait for.

Every pattern has one earliest physical signal. The first domino is that signal, named on the file it belongs to, so nobody has to guess which of several sensations is the one to act on.

It is a practical device rather than a theoretical one. A person told to watch their body will watch all of it and catch nothing. A person told to watch for a band across the chest will catch it inside a week.

    Earliest, not loudest

The naming rule is earliest. Where a sequence produces several sensations, the first domino is the one that arrives first, even when a later one is far more noticeable.

That choice is deliberate and it costs something. The loud sensation is easier to detect and it is usually too late, because by then the window is half spent. The quiet early one is harder to notice and it hands you the whole gap.

In practice most people catch the loud one for the first few weeks and the early one after that. Both count as repetitions. The drift from late to early is the shape of the progress rather than a sign of it.

Which domino belongs to which file

Each of the nine names its own, and the word usual is doing real work in every one of those sentences. A band around the chest in one file, a drop in the stomach in another, a fast heart, a lift, heat in the face, a weight across the shoulders, a scan for what is wrong, the jaw tightening, heat through the chest and neck.

The variety is the useful part. Two people describing the same behavior often turn out to be running two different sequences, and the fastest way to tell them apart is not the behavior at all. It is which signal came first.

What the first domino is not

It is not a diagnosis and it is not a fixed fact about a person. It is the marker most commonly reported for a sequence, offered as a starting place rather than as a description of you.

It is also not the only one you will ever have. Some people find a second, earlier signal after a few weeks of watching, and when that happens the earlier one becomes the domino they aim at. The file's name for it does not overrule your own record.

    Why the metaphor

Because dominoes have an order and only the first one is worth touching. Anywhere further down the line the outcome is already determined, and the effort required goes up while the effect goes down.

Questions people ask about this term

    What is the first domino?

The earliest marker in a given pattern's body signature, named on the file it belongs to so a reader knows exactly which signal to wait for rather than watching the whole body and catching nothing.

Why earliest rather than most noticeable?

Because the loud sensation is usually too late, with the window half spent by the time it arrives. The quiet early one is harder to notice and hands you the whole gap, which is worth the extra difficulty.

Does every pattern have a different one?

Yes, and that is the useful part. Two people describing the same behavior are often running two different sequences, and the fastest way to tell them apart is which signal arrived first.

What if I keep catching the later signal instead?

It still counts. Most people catch the loud one for the first few weeks and the early one after that, and the drift from late to early is what progress looks like here rather than a sign of it.

What if my first domino is not the one my file names?

Then aim at yours. The file names the marker most commonly reported for that sequence as a starting place, and your own record overrules it the moment the two disagree.

Can I have more than one?

Frequently. Where two exist, the earlier one becomes the one to aim at, even if the later one is easier to feel. Some people find a second, earlier signal only after several weeks of watching.

Is the first domino a diagnosis?

No. It is a marker most commonly reported for a sequence, not a clinical finding and not a fixed fact about a person. The archive makes no clinical claims of any kind.

Why is it called a domino?

Because dominoes have an order and only the first one is worth touching. Further down the line the outcome is already determined, and the effort needed rises while the effect falls.

How do I know I have found the right one?

It repeats. A first domino shows up on most occurrences of the same behavior, in the same place in the body, before the thought that explains what you are about to do.

What do I do when it arrives?

Say one short sentence out loud that names it and declines the behavior, then change something physical. The domino opens the three to seven second window and the sentence has to happen inside it.
