The Original Room
REFERENCE: ONE TERM
The Original Room is the situation where a pattern was installed, usually early and usually in conditions where it was the intelligent answer available at the time.
Every pattern was the right answer once. It was installed somewhere, under conditions where it did a job, and it is running now in rooms it was never built for.
The room is the place it was built for. Finding it is one of the four doors and it is the door marked optional.
Why a pattern is an intelligent answer
Because it solved something. Going quiet worked in a house where being noticed had a cost. Apologising first worked where a rising temperature had to be stopped before it arrived. Reading a mood continuously worked where somebody's state governed the room and there was no appeal.
None of those was a mistake. They were accurate responses to real conditions, usually made by somebody very young, usually without any deliberation at all. Calling them faults reads the situation backwards.
The problem is not the answer. It is that the answer kept executing after the conditions changed, in rooms with entirely different terms, where it now costs rather than protects.
Why finding the room is optional
Because locating it does not stop the sequence. It reliably reduces the shame, which is genuinely worth having, and it changes very little about what happens at half past six on a Tuesday.
This is where the archive parts company with most of the genre, which treats origin as the destination. Here it is one door of four and the other three do the mechanical work. A person can interrupt a sequence they have never traced, and many do.
Anybody who wants the excavation can have it. It is available, it is supported, and nothing downstream is gated behind completing it.
What the Original Room is not
