    The circuit break

    REFERENCE: ONE TERM

The circuit break is the spoken interruption itself: one short sentence, out loud, naming the body marker and declining the behavior, said inside the window.

One sentence, out loud, in the gap. That is the entire technique, and its smallness is not modesty about what it can do. It is the reason it fits.

Anything longer will not survive three seconds. Anything silent will not reach the circuit at all.

The three parts of the sentence

Name the marker. Say what it is. Decline the behavior. In that order, in about six words, in whatever plain language you would actually use.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Chest is tight. This is the fade starting. I am not putting the phone down.

Heat is up. This is not the size of the thing. I am not speaking yet.

The scan is running. Nothing is wrong. I am not lowering this.

Three files, one shape. The marker, the naming, the refusal. Yours should sound like you rather than like any of those, because a sentence you would never say is a sentence that will not arrive when it is needed.

Why it has to be spoken

Because the circuit runs below language, and a silent intention is language at its most private. Speaking recruits a different set of machinery, and that recruitment is the point rather than a ritual around it.

Whisper counts. Under the breath counts. In a full room, in a car, on a stairwell, at a desk with people either side of you: all of that counts. Silent does not, and this is the single most commonly ignored instruction in the whole method.

    What follows the sentence

A physical change, immediately. Stand up. Put both hands flat on a surface. Walk to the far end of the room. Get lower than you were. Move the message into a draft.

The reason is unglamorous and it is the most reliable thing on this page. Your reasoning cannot outrun the fast path. Your legs can.

What the circuit break is not

It is not an affirmation and it is not encouragement. Nothing in it says anything about your worth, your progress or your intentions, and adding any of that makes it longer and less likely to be said.

It is not a promise about what happens next either. Saying it does not guarantee the behavior stops, and a break that fails is still a repetition. A failed interruption is an interrupted sequence, which is more than an uninterrupted one.

And it is not something to get right. There is no correct wording, no minimum standard, and no version of it that counts more because it sounded better.

Questions people ask about this term

    What is the circuit break?

The spoken interruption itself: one short sentence, out loud, naming the body marker and declining the behavior, said inside the three to seven second window.

    What are the three parts?

Name the marker, say what it is, decline the behavior. In that order, in about six words, in whatever plain language you would actually use in real life.

Why does it have to be out loud?

Because the circuit runs below language, and a silent intention is language at its most private. Speaking recruits different machinery, and that recruitment is the point rather than a ritual around it.

    Does a whisper count?

Yes. Whisper counts, under the breath counts, in a car or a stairwell or at a desk with people either side of you counts. Silent does not, and that is the most commonly ignored instruction in the method.

What do I do straight after saying it?

Change something physical, immediately. Stand up, put both hands flat on a surface, walk to the far end of the room, get lower than you were, move the message into a draft. Your legs can outrun the fast path and your reasoning cannot.

    Is there a correct wording?

No. Yours should sound like you rather than like the examples, because a sentence you would never say is a sentence that will not arrive when it is needed.

    Is this an affirmation?

No. Nothing in it addresses your worth, your progress or your intentions. Adding any of that makes it longer and less likely to be said, which is the only quality that matters here.

What if I say it and do the thing anyway?

That is still a repetition. A failed interruption is an interrupted sequence, and an interrupted sequence is more than an uninterrupted one. Late and failed catches are how almost everybody starts.

    Why is it so short?

Because the window is three to seven seconds. A longer sentence does not fit, and a sentence that does not fit is one you will compose afterward instead of saying at the time.

How do I remember to use it?

You do not remember it, you wait for it. The marker is the cue, which is why the first work is finding your own marker rather than rehearsing the sentence.
