The rep
REFERENCE: ONE TERM
The rep is one repetition of the interrupt and the replacement, and it is the unit the whole method is measured in.
One repetition is the unit of measurement. Not a day without the behavior, not a week of feeling better, not a decision made at two in the morning with total sincerity.
A rep is one interrupt and one replacement, done once, in a real occurrence. That is the whole of the accounting and there is nothing else in it.
What counts as a rep
A catch at the marker, followed by the replacement behavior, counts. A catch after the marker but before the behavior counts. A catch after the behavior has already run, named out loud afterward, counts.
That last one surprises people and it is not a consolation. Naming a sequence after it ran makes the next occurrence more visible, which is the mechanism the whole practice depends on, so it is doing the actual work rather than being credited for effort.
A failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. Saying the sentence and doing the thing anyway is a rep. Answering in nine minutes rather than nine seconds is a rep. Sending the reply badly instead of not at all is a rep.
What does not count
Deciding to be different. Understanding the pattern more thoroughly. Reading a further page. Explaining the mechanism accurately to somebody else, which is the most convincing near-miss of the set.
None of those is worthless and none of them is a rep, because none of them happened inside the window on a live occurrence. The distinction is the reason this method insists on the word.
Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.
What forty days means
It is the length most people report for the interrupt practice, and it is a shape rather than a deadline. Files in this archive are never timed and nothing expires.
Forty days is also not forty reps. Some patterns fire several times a day and some fire twice a month, and a sequence with a rare cue takes longer in calendar time and no longer in reps. Count the reps, not the days.
Why the unit matters
Because it makes progress countable by somebody who is not feeling any. A person four weeks in usually reports that nothing has changed, and their own record often shows eleven catches, three of them early. Those are not the same statement.
It also removes the thing that ends most attempts, which is a bad week being read as a verdict. A bad week is a week with a certain number of reps in it. That is all it can be, because reps are the only unit in the system.
Questions people ask about this term
What is a rep?
One repetition of the interrupt and the replacement, done once in a real occurrence. It is the unit the whole method is measured in, and there is nothing else in the accounting.
Does a late catch count?
Yes. Naming a sequence after it has run makes the next occurrence more visible, which is the mechanism the practice depends on. It is doing the work rather than being credited for effort.
Does a failed interruption count?
Yes. A failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. Saying the sentence and doing the thing anyway is a rep, and so is answering in nine minutes rather than nine seconds.
What does not count as a rep?
Deciding to be different, understanding the pattern better, reading another page, or explaining the mechanism accurately to somebody else. None of those happened inside the window on a live occurrence.
What does forty days mean?
It is the length most people report for the interrupt practice, and it is a shape rather than a deadline. Files here are never timed and nothing expires.
Is forty days the same as forty reps?
No. Some patterns fire several times a day and some twice a month. A sequence with a rare cue takes longer in calendar time and no longer in reps, which is why the reps are what to count.
How many reps before something changes?
There is no number the archive will give you, because it varies by sequence and by how early the catches are landing. What is reliable is that catches get earlier before the behavior changes.
I have done four weeks and nothing has changed, so is it working?
Check the record rather than the feeling. People four weeks in commonly report no change while their own count shows eleven catches, three of them early. Those are not the same statement.
What do I do after a bad week?
Count it. A bad week is a week with a certain number of reps in it, and that is all it can be, because reps are the only unit in the system. Then the next rep is the one available to you.
Do I have to keep a written count?
It helps and it is not required. The reason to write it is that the feeling of progress lags the record by weeks, and a written count is the only thing that survives a bad Thursday intact.
