The cover story
REFERENCE: ONE TERM
The cover story is a pattern's self-justifying account of itself, identified by shape rather than content: the reasoning reaches the same conclusion no matter what the circumstances were.
The reasoning sounds like decency every time. It sounds like loyalty, or responsibility, or generosity, or being the kind of person who does not walk out on people when things are hard.
That is not a coincidence and it is not a disguise chosen for effect. A cover story only survives if it is made of something you actually believe.
How to identify it
By shape rather than by content, because the content is usually true. Take the last three occasions and ask what the reasoning concluded on each. A good month produces stay. A terrible month produces stay with an explanation attached. A neutral month produces stay for a third reason.
When the conclusion is fixed before the reasoning starts, the reasoning is not reasoning. That sentence is the test, and it does not require you to decide whether any individual argument was fair.
The second tell is fluency. A cover story is never hesitant, never partially assembled, and never surprised by a new fact. It has an answer immediately, for anything, which is not what genuine deliberation looks like.
Separating it from a real constraint
This distinction matters more than any other on this page, because getting it wrong turns a mechanism into a stick to hit yourself with. A mortgage is a fact. A visa is a fact. A person who depends on your income is a fact. None of those is a cover story.
The test is portability. Ask what the reasoning was two situations ago, when the facts were completely different. If the conclusion was the same then, with none of the current facts in place, the facts are not what is producing it.
Each thought is the chain rephrased. Each rephrasing makes the chain feel like character.
What the cover story is not
It is not dishonesty and the person running it is not lying to anybody, including themselves in any ordinary sense. Every clause in it can be checked and found accurate, which is precisely what makes it durable.
It is not a reason to distrust your own judgment generally, either. A cover story is aimed: it appears around one arrangement and is absent everywhere else, which is why the same person can be famously clear-eyed about everybody else's situation.
What to do with it
Not argue with it. The archive is consistent about this and the reason is structural: the cover story arrives after the body marker, so defeating it changes nothing upstream and the next version will be better made.
Name it at the marker instead, before it has started talking, and answer it with a plain fact rather than a counter-argument. Their workload is information, not a task assigned to me. That is a statement rather than a debate, and a statement is the only thing that fits in three seconds.
