    Pattern activation

    REFERENCE: ONE TERM

Pattern activation is the moment a pattern starts running, named as a mechanical event with a time on it rather than as something that happened to a person.

A pattern activates at a specific moment. There is a second at which nothing was running and a second at which something is, and the archive treats the difference between them as the most useful fact available.

The plain-language form is the one most people find easier to say out loud. The program is running.

Why this term and not the usual one

The genre alternative names the same moment and carries a different implication with it: that something was done to you and that a reaction followed. That framing is accurate about a great many experiences and it is not useful in the three seconds this method is aimed at.

Activation names a mechanical event with a time on it. Something started. It started here, it will run for a known length, and there is a gap in it. Every word of that can be acted on, which is the entire test the archive applies to its own vocabulary.

This is a choice about language rather than a claim that the other word is wrong. The archive states its own vocabulary plainly so nobody has to infer it, and this is one of the places where the two genres diverge on purpose.

What activation looks like from inside

It rarely announces itself. The body marker arrives, the thought that explains it arrives a moment later, and the whole thing feels continuous with the ordinary business of being a person having a Tuesday.

Which is why naming it out loud does so much. Saying the program is running converts an experience into an event, and an event has a start time, a duration and an end. An experience has none of those and cannot be interrupted.

    What pattern activation is not

It is not an excuse and the archive is careful about this. A sequence being mechanical does not make the behavior somebody else's, and nothing here is offered as a reason a person is not responsible for what they did.

It is not a clinical event either. Naming a moment is not naming a condition, and this archive makes no diagnostic claims about anybody.

And it is not permanent. A pattern activating is a thing that starts, which means it is also a thing that stops, and both halves of that are load-bearing.

    Where the term appears

Throughout the nine files, wherever a page describes the moment the sequence begins, and in the interruption scripts, where the sentence a reader says out loud is usually a plain-language version of exactly this.

Questions people ask about this term

    What is pattern activation?

The moment a pattern starts running. The archive names it as a mechanical event with a time on it, because a thing with a start time has a duration and a gap, and all three of those can be acted on.

    What is the plain-language version?

The program is running. Most people find that easier to say out loud in the moment, and saying it out loud is the part that matters, because the circuit runs below language.

Why does the archive not use the more common word?

Because the common word carries the implication that something was done to you and a reaction followed. That is accurate about many experiences and unhelpful in the three seconds this method aims at.

Is that a claim that the other word is wrong?

No. It is a choice about what this archive's vocabulary has to do, which is give a person something to act on inside a short gap. The archive states its own terms plainly rather than leaving them to be inferred.

    What does activation feel like?

Usually like nothing in particular. The marker arrives, the explaining thought follows, and the whole thing feels continuous with ordinary life. That seamlessness is exactly why naming it out loud does so much work.

Is pattern activation an excuse for what I did?

No, and the archive is careful about this. A sequence being mechanical does not make the behavior somebody else's, and nothing here is offered as a reason a person is not responsible.

    Is it a clinical term?

No. Naming a moment is not naming a condition, and this archive makes no diagnostic claims about anybody. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.

How do I know a pattern has activated?

By the marker rather than by the feeling. The body signal is the earliest reliable evidence, which is why each file names the one most often reported for that sequence.

    Does naming it stop it?

Naming it opens the option. What changes the sequence is repetitions done inside the window, and naming it out loud is the first half of one.

Can a pattern activate without anything happening?

Frequently. The cue is often internal and very small: a thought about a person, a glance at a balance, a name appearing on a screen. Nothing has to have happened for the sequence to start.
