    The window

    REFERENCE: ONE TERM

The window is the three to seven second gap between the body marker and the behavior, during which the sequence has not committed and an interruption still fits.

The gap is three to seven seconds. It opens when the body produces its marker and it closes when the behavior starts, and everything the method can offer anybody happens inside it.

That is a short interval and it is longer than it sounds. Most people have never used it, not because it is too brief, but because nobody told them there was anything there.

What is happening inside the window

The fast path has fired and the slow path has not caught up. Your body has already responded to something it read as familiar, and the part of you that produces sentences is still assembling one.

Which means nothing has committed. The chest band has arrived and the message has not been left unanswered. The heat has arrived and the first word has not left your mouth. The scan has started and the purchase has not been made.

    [MECHANISM]

The order is always the same: cue, body marker, window, behavior, relief.

The thought that explains what you are about to do arrives inside the window, after the marker rather than before it. It sounds like a reason and it is a description.

Catch the marker and you catch the sequence. Miss it and the sequence catches you.

Why the interruption has to happen there

Because before the marker there is nothing to interrupt, and after the behavior there is nothing left to interrupt. That is the entire argument, and it is why the method spends so little time on insight and so much on timing.

It also explains the most common experience people report, which is understanding a pattern completely and continuing to run it. Understanding happens hours before or hours after. The window is the only place where knowing something can turn into doing something differently.

The interruption itself has to be spoken, because the circuit runs below language and a silent intention does not reach it. Whisper counts. Silent does not.

    Why three to seven

It is a working range rather than a stopwatch reading, and it is drawn from what people report about their own sequences rather than from a laboratory. Some patterns run at the short end, some at the long, and the same person will find it varies with tiredness and load.

The number is useful for one reason only: it tells you the scale of the thing you are aiming at. A person waiting for a minute of deliberation will miss it every time. A person expecting a few seconds will start catching it.

    What the window is not

It is not willpower and it is not a moment of choosing to be better. Nothing inside it requires you to feel calm, to want the right thing, or to have resolved anything.

It is not a pass or fail test either. A late catch is still a catch, and naming the marker after the behavior has already run is a repetition rather than a failure. The window widens with practice because the marker becomes more visible, not because the seconds change.

Why the window is given away

Because it is the one thing in this system that a person in difficulty needs immediately, and putting it behind anything would make the archive one more surface that explains a problem and withholds the fix.

So it is taught in full on every page that names it, including this one, and there is nothing further to buy in order to have it. What is sold elsewhere is depth on a particular pattern. The window is not part of that and never will be.

Questions people ask about this term

What is the three to seven second window?

The gap between the body marker and the behavior, during which the sequence has not committed. The fast path has fired and the slow path has not caught up, which is why the moment exists at all.

Why three to seven seconds specifically?

It is a working range drawn from what people report about their own sequences rather than a stopwatch reading. Its use is telling you the scale to aim at: a person expecting a minute of deliberation misses it every time.

What do I actually do inside the window?

Say one short sentence out loud that names the body marker and declines the behavior, then change something physical. The sentence has to be spoken, because the circuit runs below language.

Why does it have to be out loud?

Because a silent intention does not reach a circuit that runs underneath language. Whisper counts and silent does not, which is the single most commonly ignored instruction in the method.

    What if I miss it?

Then you catch the next one, and the late catch still counts. Naming the marker after the behavior has already run is a repetition rather than a failure, and late catches are how almost everybody starts.

Does the window get longer with practice?

The seconds do not change. What changes is how visible the marker is, which has the same effect: you arrive at the start of the window instead of somewhere in the middle of it.

Is the window the same for every pattern?

The range is the same and the marker is not. The chest band starts it in one file, the heat in another, the jaw in a third. Each pattern names its own first domino so you know exactly what you are waiting for.

Do I need to feel calm to use it?

No. Nothing inside the window requires you to feel calm, to want the right thing, or to have resolved anything. Calm is downstream and it arrives far too late to be useful.

    Is the window free?

Entirely, permanently, and in full on every page that names it. It is the thing a person in difficulty needs immediately, and putting it behind anything would make this one more surface that explains a problem and withholds the fix.

Why does understanding my pattern not use the window?

Because understanding happens hours before or hours after. The window is the only place where knowing something can become doing something differently, which is why insight alone has never stopped a sequence.

    THE ARCHIVES

The window is the same width in every file. Which marker opens yours is the part the assessment names, in two minutes, free.
