    Pattern archaeology

    REFERENCE: ONE TERM

Pattern archaeology is the practice of identifying a repeating behavior, tracing its structure, and locating where it was installed, on the understanding that the thing is buried and still running.

Archaeology is the accurate word for this. The thing being dug for is buried and still functioning, which is not true of most buried things, and it is the whole difference between this and an interest in the past.

A pattern was installed somewhere. It is running now. Both halves matter, and only the second one can be acted on today.

    What the practice consists of

Three pieces of work, in this order. Identify the repeating behavior, which is harder than it sounds because a sequence that runs everywhere is invisible in the way weather is invisible. Trace its structure, which means finding the cue, the body marker, the gap and the relief. Locate the room it was installed in, which is the optional part.

The tracing is where most of the value sits. A behavior with parts is a different object from a behavior with a character explanation attached to it, because parts can be interrupted and a character explanation cannot.

    Why the digging is optional

Because knowing the origin of a sequence does not stop the sequence. It reliably reduces the shame, which is worth having and is not nothing, and it changes very little about what happens at half past six on a Tuesday.

This is the point where the archive parts company with most of the genre. Origin work is a door and it is one door of four, and the two that do the mechanical work are the ones about the gap and the replacement.

Anybody who wants the excavation can have it, and the file supports it. Anybody who does not can interrupt a sequence they have never traced, and the interruption works exactly as well.

    What pattern archaeology is not

It is not a study of the past for its own sake. The past is only interesting here to the extent that something from it is still executing, which is why the archive asks what is running rather than what happened.

It is not blame allocation. Locating the room a pattern was installed in is a piece of information about conditions, not an account to be settled, and the person who installed it was usually passing on something they received themselves.

And it is not a diagnosis. Naming a sequence is not naming a condition, and nothing in this practice makes a clinical claim about anybody.

    Where the term appears

In the tagline, where it states a category. Pattern archaeology, not therapy. The word not is doing category work rather than comparative work: it says what kind of thing this is, rather than what it is better than.

Questions people ask about this term

    What is pattern archaeology?

The practice of identifying a repeating behavior, tracing its structure, and locating where it was installed. Archaeology is the accurate word because the thing is buried and still functioning, which is not true of most buried things.

Why is it called archaeology and not history?

Because history is about what happened and this is about what is still executing. The past matters here only to the extent that something from it is running now, which is a much narrower and much more useful question.

Do I have to find where my pattern came from?

No. Excavation is one of the four doors and it is the optional one. Knowing the origin reliably reduces the shame and changes very little about Tuesday, so the interruption is taught independently of it.

Is pattern archaeology the same as therapy?

No, and the tagline states that as a category rather than a comparison. This practice makes no clinical claim, diagnoses nobody, and is not a substitute for a person in a room.

Is this about blaming my parents?

No. Locating the room a pattern was installed in is information about conditions rather than an account to be settled, and whoever installed it was usually passing on something they received as a child themselves.

What does tracing the structure actually mean?

Finding the cue, the body marker, the gap, the behavior and the relief that follows it. A behavior with parts can be interrupted. A behavior with a character explanation attached cannot, which is the practical reason to trace it.

Why is a repeating behavior hard to see?

Because a sequence that runs everywhere is invisible the way weather is invisible. It has no contrast to be noticed against, which is why the archive teaches people to look for the body marker rather than for the behavior.

    Is this a diagnosis?

No. Naming a sequence is not naming a condition. The archive makes no clinical claims and clinical questions belong with a clinician.

How long does the tracing take?

The naming takes minutes. The tracing takes as long as it takes, and it is not a prerequisite for anything: the interruption can be practised from the first day, on a sequence that has only been named.

What is the difference between this and self-help?

Most of the genre explains the problem well and stops there. This one is built on the observation that explanation does not rewire, so the explaining is kept short and the mechanical part is where the work goes.
