I cut them off and now I regret it
Do the next ten minutes first. They are below.
AFTER THE FACT / PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern
You cut them off and meant it. The message went, or the number got blocked, or you said it to their face. It felt clean for about an hour. Now the clean feeling has gone, and what is left is the person.
This page is not going to rule on whether you were right. That is a verdict and this is a record. What is here is what to do in the next ten minutes, and then, if you want it, what the regret is made of.
The next ten minutes
Put the phone down. The cut happened fast, and the strongest pull right now is to undo it just as fast. Do not unblock, do not send the paragraph, and do not ring them tonight.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Write one line, somewhere they cannot see it: what you actually wanted from them this week. Not the offence. The want underneath it.
If you cannot leave it until tomorrow, send one sentence and nothing else: I ended that too fast. I would like to talk when I have slept.
No account of why you did it. No list of what they did first. No second message if the first one sits unanswered.
Then leave it. A cut made in a minute and reversed in a minute is the same pattern twice, with the person on the other end watching both. One night between the two is the smallest change you can make, and it is a real one.
What the regret is made of
An hour ago there was no regret. There was relief, and the relief was total. Nothing to answer, nothing to manage, nobody who could see you. That relief is the part worth noticing, because it arrived before any of the regret did.
The regret came when the exposure went. Once they could not reach you, the thing you were protecting against was gone, and what was left in the room was how much they mattered. The order is the whole story. First the relief, then the person.
The regret is not evidence that you were wrong. It is evidence that you wanted the contact, which is a different fact.
Why it felt so clear at the time
Because the cut did not arrive as a cut. It arrived as clarity. For a few seconds everything about them was obvious, and the obvious thing was that you were done.
Clarity that arrives in a few seconds and reverses by bedtime is not a judgment. It is the sequence, and it has a body signal, which is what you feel as the pattern starts. For this one it is often a band of tightness across the ribs and a very steady, cold calm.
That calm is three to seven seconds ahead of the block button. That is the window, the few seconds between the feeling and the act. It is a working figure, not a measurement. Tonight it has already closed. The next one is the one available to you.
What to say tomorrow
First decide whether you want the contact. Some cuts stand. If they hurt you, or you are not safe with them, you made a decision rather than running a pattern, and nothing on this page asks you to reverse it.
If you wanted the contact and it ended in a minute, the sentence is short. It names what you did and nothing about them.
[REWRITE FRAME]
Once, in an ordinary voice or an ordinary message:
I cut you off on Tuesday and that was too fast. I am sorry about the way I did it. I would like to talk, when you want to.
Then stop. Do not ask them to say it is fine. Do not explain the hour before the cut. Whatever they do with the sentence is theirs.
The different action is one honest sentence that leaves the door where you can both find it. Repeat it until it is easier to reach than the block button. That is all the rewrite is, and a late version of it, sent the morning after, still counts.
What to do with the guilt
Part of the guilt is accurate. You ended something in a minute that took longer than a minute to build, and the other person did not get a say. Keep that part. It is the reason to work on the calm before the cut.
The other part says you are the kind of person who throws people away. That is a verdict, and there is nowhere in this archive to file one. A pattern that fires fast is not a character.
Do not spend the night rebuilding the case against them so the cut makes sense again. That is the pattern defending itself. Eat something, drink some water, and let the question stay open until morning.
What tonight actually is
An entry. Filed after the fact, which is an ordinary thing a record accepts rather than a failure being reopened.
There is no shame register here and nowhere for a guilt entry to be filed. Tonight is not the whole record of you and them. The next cold calm is the one available to you, and one sentence is what goes there.
The full file on this sequence, including the calm that comes before the cut, is at /patterns/why-do-i-push-people-away when you want it. It will keep.
