Why do I push people away when they get close?
PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern
You did not stop caring about them. Something in you closed before you decided anything, and the reason arrived afterward, sounding sensible. It usually sounds like timing. It usually sounds like needing room to think.
This is the Disappearing Pattern. It does not fire when things go wrong. It fires when things go right, which is why it has been so hard to see. Nobody looks for the cause of a problem inside a good week.
Why do I pull away when someone gets close?
Closeness and safety are not the same thing to a nervous system that once learned they were opposites. The pattern is not reading the person in front of you. It is reading a condition. Someone is now close enough to leave, and their leaving would cost something.
So it moves first. Not dramatically. You get quieter. You answer slower. You find a reason this week is bad for plans. From the outside none of it looks like leaving, which is why nobody names it, including you.
It runs outside romance too. A manager says you are being considered for something bigger and you start listing what is wrong with the role. A friend calls you their closest person and you notice how long you let the next message sit. Same shape, different room.
Sometimes it arrives as what people call the ick. A sudden, total revulsion at something small and specific, the way they chew, a word they keep using, how they looked at you across a room. The ick presents as information about them. Check when it showed up. It almost never appears in week one.
It is also why so much stays undefined for so long. Undefined has nothing in it to withdraw from.
You did not plan to ghost anyone. Almost nobody running this does. The disappearing happens in increments that each look reasonable on their own, and then it has been three weeks, and reaching out feels impossible, and the distance has started arguing for itself.
Why do I lose interest the moment someone likes me back?
The interest did not go anywhere. What changed is that the situation stopped being a question and became a fact.
While they were uncertain, nothing had been handed to you, and nothing handed to you could be taken back. The moment they choose you, there is something to lose. What you are calling lost interest is a program calculating exposure.
Check the timing on your own history. It almost never happens at the beginning. It happens right after the good week.
This is the part that makes no sense from outside and perfect sense from inside. You want closeness and you run from it, in the same week, sometimes in the same hour. Both are true at once. They are running on different systems, and only one of them is fast.
What happens in my body right before I pull away?
Before the thought, there is a physical event. For most people running this pattern the first marker is the chest. A band around the ribs, one notch too tight. The breath goes shallow and high. Sometimes the throat closes slightly. Sometimes the stomach drops while your face is still perfectly pleasant.
For some people it is specific enough to timestamp. The chest tightens when their name comes up on the phone, before the message has even been opened. Others describe it as feeling suffocated in a room where nothing at all has happened.
[MECHANISM]
The chest band is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the behavior does.
The thought that follows it, this is moving too fast, I need space, they would not like the real version of me, is not the cause. It is the narration.
You are not constructing that story. You are receiving one.
That gap between the body marker and the behavior is the only part of this that matters. Everything after it is paperwork.
Why have I done this in every relationship?
Because you did not pick it. It was installed.
You have probably said some version of I ruin every good thing in my life. Possibly at two in the morning, possibly to nobody. Or the shorter one, why am I like this. Both are the same question asked at the end of a sequence instead of at the start of it, which is why they never produce an answer you can use.
In the room where this was learned, distance worked. Someone left. Or someone stayed and went cold. Or affection arrived with conditions and got withdrawn without warning, and no one explained the rule. A child watching that does the only intelligent thing available: get out first, so the leaving belongs to you.
In that room, at that age, with those exits, the pattern was intelligence. It is running now in rooms it was never built for. That is the actual problem, and it is a far smaller problem than being a person who cannot love anyone.
The pattern was the right answer to the wrong room.
How do I stop pushing people away?
Not by understanding it better. You have understood it for years and it kept running. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.
The window is three to seven seconds wide. It opens when the chest tightens and it closes when the first cover behavior deploys, the vague answer, the delayed reply, the sudden busy week. Inside that window the circuit has not committed yet. That is where the work happens, and it is the entire reason to learn your body marker.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Out loud, quietly enough that only you hear it:
Chest is tight. The exit is loading. I am not leaving this room.
Then do the smallest opposite thing available. Answer the message you were going to let sit. Say the plain sentence: I went quiet. It is not about you.
It has to be spoken. The circuit runs below language, which is why thinking at it has never worked. You are putting a sound in the room the circuit did not predict. Whisper counts. Silent does not.
A failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. You will catch it late for a while, sometimes an hour late, sometimes a day late. Late still counts as a repetition.
Is this who I am, or is this a pattern running?
There is a test, and it is not a feeling. Character is what you choose when the conditions change. A pattern arrives on the same cue, in the same order, with the same body marker, and produces the same behavior whether you like the person or not.
The people who know you would say you keep everyone at arm's length. You would say you have simply never met anyone who fit. Those are two descriptions of one sequence, taken from opposite sides of it.
Read your own history for the sequence rather than the story. If the sequence repeats across a partner, a job, and a friendship, you are not looking at a personality. You are looking at a program.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running. Those are different things, and the difference is the entire method.
Questions people ask about this
Why do I push people away when I actually want them close?
Because the part of you doing the pushing is not the part that wants them. It is an older program that treats closeness as exposure and moves first to control the cost. Wanting them and pushing them away are not a contradiction. They are two systems running at different speeds.
Why do I lose feelings for someone as soon as they commit?
Commitment converts a possibility into something losable. The pattern responds to that conversion, not to the person. This is why the feeling usually drops right after a good stretch rather than after a fight.
What does it feel like right before I pull away?
Most people report the chest first. A tight band around the ribs, breath high and shallow, sometimes a drop in the stomach. It arrives three to seven seconds before the behavior and it arrives before any thought explains it.
Is pushing people away a defense mechanism?
It behaves like one. It was learned in a situation where distance genuinely protected you, and it kept running after the situation ended. Calling it a defense explains where it came from. It does not tell you how to stop it. The body marker does.
Why do I only do this with people I actually like?
Because only those people can cost you anything. People you are indifferent to never activate it, which is exactly why the pattern looks like proof that you are unable to love. It is proof of the opposite.
How do I stop myself from pulling away in a relationship?
Catch the body marker, say one sentence out loud naming it, then do the smallest opposite action within a few minutes. Answer the message. Say you went quiet. The spoken part matters because the circuit runs below language.
How long does it take to stop pushing people away?
The interrupt practice runs forty days for most people. Forty days is the shape of the work, not a deadline. Files are never timed, and the count is repetitions, not perfect days.
Am I just an avoidant person?
That is a label, and labels are yours to claim or refuse. What can be confirmed here is the mechanism: a body marker, a three to seven second gap, and a behavior that fires the same way every time. The mechanism is what you can interrupt. The label is not.
Why do I get the ick out of nowhere?
Because it is rarely out of nowhere. Check when it arrived. If it shows up after a good stretch rather than on a first meeting, it is doing a job, and the job is distance. The specific detail it attaches to is almost interchangeable.
Why do I ghost people I actually care about?
Because nobody decides to ghost. It happens in small increments that each look reasonable, and then enough time has passed that reaching out feels impossible. The distance you built starts arguing for itself.
Why do I want closeness and run from it at the same time?
Because both are true and they run on different systems. One of them is slow and one of them is fast, and the fast one moves before the slow one has finished forming a sentence. That is not a contradiction in you. It is a timing problem.
Why do I keep things undefined instead of committing?
Undefined has nothing in it to withdraw from. As long as the situation has no name, there is no position to lose and no exit to make, which makes it the most comfortable place this pattern can find.
