Why do I try to make my partner jealous?

Before the next move, notice what your body is doing and what you are hoping to see.

    CROSS-REFERENCE: THREE FILES

You mention someone else on purpose again. Or you post the photo and wait. Or you let a message sit unanswered so they wonder. Then you watch their face. Afterward you ask what kind of person does this to someone they love.

That question asks for a verdict, and this page will not give one. Ask a narrower question instead: what were you checking for when you watched their face? And what did your body do just before?

Why does calling myself manipulative not help?

Because a label has no parts. Manipulative, game-playing, cruel: the word sits there and the next move happens anyway. It also skips the useful part, which is that the move is asking a question you have not said out loud.

A pattern has parts. The circuit is the sequence of steps a pattern runs. It starts with the cue, the first thing that sets it off. Then come a body signal, a thought, the behavior and the relief. The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. The window is the few seconds between that signal and the behavior.

You are not trying to hurt them. You are trying to see if it would.

What does it look like from the inside?

It looks like a joke, a passing story, a photo you were going to post anyway. Each one can be denied. That is part of how it works. The move is small enough that you can tell yourself it was nothing, and big enough that you can read their reaction.

    [MECHANISM]

The cue is often a sense that they are drifting: a quiet day, a short reply, a night they seemed elsewhere.

The body signal comes first, three to seven seconds before the move. That figure is a working one, not a measurement.

Then the thought arrives, already written: if they still care, it will show. Then the behavior: the name, the post, the silence. Then their reaction, a short relief, and the sequence ready to run again.

The thought is not the cause. It follows the body. That is why the reaction you get settles nothing for long, whatever it is.

How do I tell which file this is?

By the body, not the move. Three files can make the same move. Each one starts in a different place.

The Testing Pattern, where you push to find out when someone will stop caring, starts as a fast heart. You watch their face to see if they still care. The Disappearing Pattern, where closeness sets off a quiet exit, starts as a band around the chest after a close stretch. The move cools the room. The Rage Pattern, where heat turns into words before you choose them, starts as heat up the neck. The move is a sting sent back.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

For one week, write down each move after you make it.

Next to it, write what you felt just before: heart, chest, or heat. And what you were hoping to see.

Do not try to stop anything yet. You are only finding which file is yours.

Why do I try to make my partner jealous?

Because their jealousy looks like an answer. If they mind, the thought goes, they still care. Your body reads some small change as distance, and the move is a way to measure it without asking. The answer does not last, so the move comes back. Next time you reach for it, notice what your body did first. Then ask yourself what you wanted to know.

What do I say to make my boyfriend jealous?

This page will not write those lines. Here is why. The words you are looking for stand in for a plainer sentence: I need to know you still care. Any line that makes him jealous asks that question in a way he cannot answer straight. Try the plain sentence instead, once, on a calm day. Then notice what your body does when you say it.

Why do I try to make my partner feel bad?

Often because you feel bad first, and the move hands it over. A hurt lands in you. Your body moves. A remark goes out that will sting them, and for a moment the weight is shared. The relief is real and short. Write down the last time you did it. Then write what you felt in the hour before. That hour is where it started.

Can this change, or is this just how I am?

Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. Catch means you feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept means you interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Here, the different action is the plain sentence instead of the move.

Each of the three files below carries its own script for the window, built for its own body signal. Start with the one whose signal you found. Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer.

    THE FILES THIS POINTS AT

Read for the body signal rather than for the description: what you feel, and when. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.

    • The Testing Pattern

A fast heart, and your eyes on their face as the name lands.

Why do I test people who love me?

    • The Disappearing Pattern

A band around the chest when things get close, and a move that cools the room.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

    • The Rage Pattern

Heat up the neck, and a sting sent back before you decided to send it.

Why do I get so angry over small things?

    Questions people ask about this

    Am I manipulative?

That is a verdict, and a verdict gives you nothing to do. The usable question is what you were checking for, and what your body did just before you made the move.

What am I actually checking for?

Usually whether they still care. Their jealousy looks like an answer. It is a short one, which is why the move comes back.

Why does their reaction never settle it?

Because the question started as a body signal, and a reaction does not reach a body signal for long. If they mind, the relief fades. If they do not, the fear grows.

Why do I do it after we have been close?

That is often The Disappearing Pattern. A close stretch sets off a band around the chest, and the move cools the room. The distance feels safer for a while.

Why do I watch their face so closely?

That is often The Testing Pattern. The move is the test and their face is the result. A passed test does not settle it for long.

Why do I want to make them feel bad when I am hurt?

That is often The Rage Pattern, or close to it. Heat up the neck, and a sting goes back before you decided to send it. The heat is the first event.

    What is the body signal?

It is what you feel as the pattern starts. A fast heart, a band around the chest, or heat up the neck. It arrives a few seconds before you act.

    What should I say instead?

The plain sentence the move stands in for. I need to know you still care. Or: I felt far from you today. Say it once, on a calm day.

Should I tell my partner I have been doing this?

That is yours to decide. Saying it once, plainly, as something you are working on, names the move so it is harder to run in secret.

Is posting to make them jealous the same thing?

Yes, by the same sequence. A screen just makes the move easier to deny and easier to repeat. Write down what you felt before you posted.

Do I need to know where this started?

No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.

    THE ARCHIVES

If you want the narrower question answered rather than the wide one, the assessment names which sequence is running.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
