Why do I only want the ones who do not want me?

Read on. The two files this could belong to are named below.

    CROSS-REFERENCE: TWO FILES

The pull starts when they go cold. Not when they are cruel, and not even when they are interesting. The moment the reply slows down, something in you leans forward. Read that order again, because it is the whole case. The want arrives after the withdrawal, not before it.

You arrived with a phrase for this. The thrill of the chase, or they are playing hard to get. The phrase is right about the timing. It is wrong about what the timing is for.

What the thrill of the chase gets right

That the want is tied to distance, and that it arrives fast. Anyone who has felt a flat week turn electric because of one unanswered message knows the phrase is not describing nothing. It names a real spike.

It is right that steadiness does not produce the spike. The person who answers every message, who says they like you and then keeps liking you, produces no scan, no wait and no relief. The phrase has the right two people in it.

And it is right that this is not about the other person's qualities. One of the most honest searches in this territory comes from somebody chasing people they do not even like. The phrase allows for that. Most explanations do not.

    Where it stops

At the word thrill. Thrill says the chase is fun, and so the fix is to grow out of it or to pick better people. You have tried both. The want still lands on whoever goes cold.

What the phrase cannot see is that the pull is recognition. It is not an assessment of the person. Your body is very good at spotting a familiar emotional weather, and very bad at telling you whether that weather was ever good for you. Indifference is the weather it was trained on. When somebody goes cold, the body reports: this one, I know this one.

That is why liking them is beside the point. You do not need to like a person for your body to recognise the conditions around them. The chase is not a preference. It is a sequence, and sequences do not take votes.

What is happening in the four seconds

A flip in the stomach, then heat up the front of the chest, then a forward lean, as if something is about to be decided in the next minute. That is the body signal, the thing you feel in the stomach and chest as the pattern starts, before you have assessed anybody.

    [MECHANISM]

The stomach flip is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before you check the phone, send the second message, or drive over.

Then the thought: I just need to know where I stand. That thought is not information. It is the heat, converted into a reason.

When the reply finally comes, the flip stops. That relief is the reinforcement, and it is why a person who answers on time has never once produced it.

The window is the few seconds between the stomach flip and the message you send. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. Inside it, the circuit, the sequence from the first flip to the behavior, has not committed to anything yet.

Why do I ignore the one who wants me?

Sometimes for the same reason, seen from the other side. The steady one produces no flip, so the body files them under nothing there. That is Attraction to Harm reading calm as absence. Nothing is wrong with them. Nothing fired.

But watch for a different shape. If you go cold on the warm one on purpose, and then watch to see whether they chase, that is not this file. That is The Testing Pattern: if they stay, you have proof that expires by the weekend. Its signal is different too, a hard fast heart rather than a flip in the stomach, and it needs a different interruption.

    [PATTERN SNAPSHOT]

Attraction to Harm: they go cold, your stomach flips, you lean in. The want follows their distance.

The Testing Pattern: they stay warm, your heart races, you go cold to see if they follow. The distance is yours and it is a check.

Both can run in one person in one month. The body tells you which is firing.

    Which file do I read?

The one whose signal you can feel this week. If the flip in the stomach arrives when they pull back, read the Attraction to Harm file. If the fast heart arrives when they come close, and the cold is something you do, read The Testing Pattern.

This page does not carry a script, because one script for two sequences would be a guess with instructions attached. Each file carries its own, in full and free.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

For one week, write down the moment the want arrives. Not who, just when.

Beside it, write what they had just done: gone quiet, replied late, said something warm.

Then write the first thing you felt in your body. Stomach or heart. That column tells you which file is yours.

Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. The notes are not the work. They tell you which work to do.

    THE FILES THIS POINTS AT

Read for the body signal rather than for the description: what you feel, and when. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.

    • Attraction to Harm

The want that follows their distance. A flip in the stomach, then the lean forward.

Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?

    • The Testing Pattern

The cold you do on purpose, to see if they follow. A hard fast heart, then a check.

Why do I test people who love me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I only want the ones who do not want me?

Because the pull is recognition, not assessment. Your body was trained on inconsistency and reads indifference as the familiar weather. When somebody goes cold, the stomach flips, and the flip is what you have been calling wanting.

Why do I want him more when he ignores me?

Because the ignoring is the cue, the first thing that starts the sequence. The stomach flips, the heat rises, and the reply you are waiting for becomes the only relief on offer. A reply on time has never produced that relief, which is why it never felt like much.

Why do I chase people I do not even like?

That is the cleanest evidence of the mechanism. Liking is an assessment. The pull is a recognition of the conditions around a person, and it fires whether or not you rate the person. A sequence does not take a vote.

Is it just the thrill of the chase?

The phrase is right that the want is tied to distance and arrives fast. It is wrong that the pull is fun or chosen. It is a flip in the stomach three to seven seconds before you act, and it is older than any one person.

Why do steady people feel boring to me?

Because nothing fires. A person who answers every time produces no scan, no wait and no relief, so your body reports back that there is nothing there. Calm is being read as absence. That is a reading, not a fact about them.

Why do I ignore the one who loves me?

Either because they produce no flip, which is this file, or because you go cold on purpose to see whether they follow, which is The Testing Pattern. The second has a different signal, a hard fast heart, and needs its own file.

Does rejection make me want someone more?

It starts the sequence. Rejection is a withdrawal, withdrawal is the cue, and the stomach flips a few seconds later. What you feel after that is the pattern's want, and it is sized to the withdrawal rather than to the person.

What is the body signal before I chase someone?

A flip in the stomach, heat up the front of the chest and a forward lean. It arrives three to seven seconds before the message, the check or the drive over, and it is the earliest thing you can learn to feel.

Why does being chased feel like nothing?

Because being chased removes the distance, and distance is what the sequence runs on. Nothing fired, so your body reports nothing there. With repetition that reading changes, in the body first and in the preference later.

Can I stop this without changing who I date?

The interruption happens in you, in the seconds after the stomach flips, and it does not need the other person to do anything. Who you date changes afterward, once calm stops reading as nothing.

What if both of these are running?

They often are, in one person in one month. The body tells them apart: a flip in the stomach when they pull back is one, a hard fast heart when they come close is the other. Catch whichever you can feel this week.

Where do I read the full files?

Both are linked from this page and both are free in full, written in the second person and about your own body. Nothing in them is gated and there is nothing to buy in order to read them.

    THE ARCHIVES

If you want to know which of the two is running most often for you, the assessment names it.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
