FILE: ARCH-NAM-008 / STATUS: ACTIVE
What is it called when you are drawn to the wrong people?
PATTERN: Attraction to Harm
The pull is recognition, not an assessment. That single distinction is the whole file, and it is the reason every account of this you have read so far has left you exactly where it found you.
In this archive it is filed as Attraction to Harm. You came for the term rather than the cause, so here it is, and then here is what it is not.
What is Attraction to Harm?
A pull toward the emotional conditions a nervous system was trained on, arriving as chemistry. Your body is very good at identifying a familiar emotional environment and very bad at telling you whether that environment was good for you.
What you call chemistry is your nervous system recognizing a threat it was trained to bond with.
[PATTERN SNAPSHOT]
Cue: inconsistency. Warmth that arrives without warning and leaves without explanation.
Body: a flip in the stomach, heat up the front of the chest, an urgent forward lean.
Gap: three to seven seconds.
Behavior: moving toward it. The message, the reply, the agreement, the drive over.
Relief: the waiting ends, briefly. That relief is why the sequence keeps repeating.
The specific thing being recognized is almost always the schedule rather than the person. How warmth arrived, how it left, and how long you had to wait in between.
What are the other names for this?
More than for any other file in the archive, which tells you how many people have tried to describe it. Most of them are naming the bond and stopping there.
These are the terms people arrive holding, and every one of them is describing something real:
- “is this repetition compulsion”
- “is this limerence”
- “is this love addiction”
- “is intense chemistry a red flag”
- “am I addicted to chaos”
Each of those describes the grip accurately and describes it from the outside. They tell you what the bond is called and where it may have come from. What none of them supplies is the moment, which is a stomach flip about three to seven seconds before you reach for the phone.
A label sorts you. A file gives you a start time. That is the whole difference and it is why the term matters less than the marker.
What is it not?
It is not a wish to be treated badly. What was recognized was a schedule of warmth and absence, not a promise of harm. The harm arrived afterward, attached to the schedule, and nobody in this file selected for it.
It is not bad judgment. You usually know, early and accurately, and can name the warning sign out loud in order. Knowing happens in one system and wanting happens in another, and they do not share a wire.
It is not a preference either, which is the version most likely to get said to you by somebody trying to be helpful. A preference varies. This selects for the same emotional conditions every time, however different the people look on the surface.
And it is not a diagnosis. This archive makes no clinical claims and issues no diagnoses. A pattern is an observed sequence with a marker and a timing, which is smaller than a category and considerably more useful.
What does it feel like right before it fires?
A flip in the stomach, heat up the front of the chest, and an urgent forward lean, as though something is about to be decided in the next minute. It arrives before you have had a conversation with the person and before any assessment has been made.
[MECHANISM]
The cocktail. That is what your body is calling chemistry.
Adrenaline from the uncertainty. Cortisol from the waiting. Dopamine when the reply finally lands, and higher when it lands late than when it lands on time.
Intermittent reward is the strongest reinforcement schedule known. That is not a metaphor for what this feels like. It is the actual wiring.
It is why the anxiety keeps getting filed as butterflies. They are the same chemistry read by a system with no other category for it. If the only time your body has gone bright was while waiting to find out where you stood, waiting is what excitement will feel like for a while.
The measurable version is the phone. Checked every few minutes without a decision being made, put face down as a strategy and checked anyway. That is not a habit. That is a reward schedule doing exactly what it was built to do.
How is it interrupted?
By catching the stomach flip and asking one question, inside the gap, out loud. Not by learning to spot them better. You already spot them, and it has never once stopped the pull, because insight does not rewire and repetition does.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Out loud, quietly:
Stomach flipped. That is recognition, not chemistry. I am not moving toward this yet.
Then ask the one question that separates the two: does this feel exciting, or does it feel like home?
Home is the answer that matters. When the pull turns out to be familiarity, the charge drops noticeably inside a minute or two, and something in you goes quiet and a little sad. That drop is the pattern being seen, and it is also the first honest information you have had about that person.
Then expect the steady ones to keep feeling flat for a while. Calm registers as nothing until enough repetitions teach the body to read it as safety rather than absence, and that recalibration is slower than the recognition. It is also the actual work.

Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?
Questions people ask about this
What is it called when you are drawn to the wrong people?
In this archive it is filed as Attraction to Harm: a pull toward the emotional conditions a nervous system was trained on, arriving as chemistry. The defining feature is that it is recognition rather than assessment.
Is this repetition compulsion?
That term describes the repeat accurately and from the outside. What it does not give you is the moment it can be reached, which is a stomach flip three to seven seconds before you move toward somebody.
Is this limerence?
Limerence names the intensity and the preoccupation. It does not name the schedule underneath them, which is warmth arriving without warning and leaving without explanation, and the schedule is the part that is actually doing the work.
Is intense chemistry a red flag?
Not always, and instant intensity is worth checking rather than trusting. Ask whether it feels exciting or whether it feels like home. Familiarity has a distinct quality once you start looking for it.
Does this mean I want to be treated badly?
No. What was recognized was a schedule of warmth and absence, not a promise of harm. The harm arrived afterward, attached to the schedule, and nobody in this file selected for it.
Why do kind people feel boring?
Because nothing is firing. Consistency produces no spike and no relief, and a system with little experience of rest reports that stillness as absence. What feels like boredom is often the first calm you have been in.
What is the body signal before I reach for the phone?
A flip in the stomach, heat up the front of the chest, and an urgent forward lean, as though something is about to be decided immediately. It arrives three to seven seconds ahead of the reaching.
Why does knowing better not help?
Because knowing runs on one system and the pull runs on another, and they do not share a wire. You can name every warning sign in order and want them anyway. That is a timing problem rather than a failure of judgment.
Is it just my type?
A type is a preference and preferences vary. This selects for the same emotional conditions every time regardless of how different the people look, which is what separates a pattern from a taste.
Is this a diagnosis?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and does not diagnose anybody. A pattern is an observed sequence with a marker and a timing. Clinical questions belong with a clinician.
How long before steady people stop feeling flat?
Longer than the recognition takes, which is worth knowing in advance. Calm reads as nothing until enough repetitions teach the body to read it as safety, and that recalibration is the work rather than the insight.
