Am I codependent, or is this a pattern running?

    CROSS-REFERENCE: ONE FILE

The term describes a role you occupy. Somebody whose own state is organized around another person's, who over-functions, who finds their own needs difficult to locate and easy to postpone.

That is accurate. It is also a shape rather than a sequence, and a shape has nothing in it you can act on this evening.

    What the term gets right

The asymmetry, precisely. One person's needs become the weather and the other's become optional, and both people usually agree that this is simply how things are. Naming that is worth a great deal, because it is close to invisible from inside.

It is right about the origin too. The pattern is usually learned in a house where somebody else's state genuinely was the most important information in the room, and where reading it accurately was the price of the room being survivable.

And it is right that the person running it is rarely a martyr about it. Most people described this way are competent, private, and extremely reluctant to be the subject of a conversation, which is part of why it goes unnamed for decades.

    Where it stops

At the role. Codependent is a noun about your position in an arrangement, and positions do not have cues. It cannot tell you which minute of Tuesday the sequence ran, which is the only information that turns out to be operable.

There is a second limitation and it is sharper. The term is frequently used to explain why somebody stays, and it explains the staying by describing the person. That is circular. You stay because you are codependent, and you are codependent because you stay.

The phrasings people arrive with are consistent and the last one is where the circularity lands:

    • “am I codependent”
    • “am I codependent or traumatized”
    • “is this codependency or love”
    • “how do I stop being codependent”

The archive breaks the circle somewhere else. Not at the person, and not at the arrangement. At the reasoning, which has an identifying feature the term never mentions.

    The cover-story test

The staying is not the pattern. The reasoning that produces the staying is, and it can be identified by shape rather than by content.

Watch where it lands rather than what it says. They need me. Nobody else understands them. It would be cruel to go now, right when things are hard. Each of those sentences may contain something true, which is exactly what makes them work.

    [MECHANISM]

The weight across the shoulders is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the reasoning does.

The math reaches the same answer no matter what the numbers were. A good month produces stay. A terrible month produces stay with an explanation attached.

When the conclusion is fixed before the reasoning starts, it is not reasoning. The math is the chain thinking out loud.

That test does something the label cannot. It distinguishes a decision to stay, which can go either way on a given day, from a conclusion you keep arriving at, which never varies. Both can look identical from outside and only one of them is a sequence.

    How the sequence is interrupted

By catching the weight and declining to run the math, rather than by winning an argument with the cover story. Arguing with it does not work: a cover story that was obviously false would have been discarded years ago.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

    Out loud, quietly:

There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not solving it right now.

Then answer the cover story with the plain fact rather than an argument: their feelings are information, not a task assigned to me.

It has to be spoken, because the circuit runs below language, which is why thinking at it has never worked. Whisper counts. Silent does not.

Nothing in this archive tells anybody to end anything. What is on offer is the difference between a decision and a sequence, and what you do with that difference stays yours.

    Questions people ask about this

Am I codependent, or is this a pattern running?

The term describes a role in an arrangement and describes it accurately. A pattern is a sequence with a weight across the shoulders, a three to seven second gap, and reasoning that arrives at a fixed conclusion. The role sorts you. The sequence can be caught.

    Am I codependent or traumatized?

Both are categories rather than mechanisms and neither gives you anything to do tonight. What can be confirmed is the shape of the reasoning: if it reaches the same answer whatever the month contained, it is not reasoning.

How do I stop being codependent?

That question asks how to stop being a category, which has no mechanism in it. The answerable version is what to do in the seconds after the weight arrives, which is to name it out loud and decline to run the math right then.

    Is this codependency or love?

Both can be true at once, which is what keeps people in place for years. The useful question is not whether you love them. It is whether staying is a choice you are making or a conclusion you keep arriving at.

    What is the cover-story test?

Watch where the reasoning lands rather than what it says. A good month producing stay and a terrible month producing stay with an explanation attached is a fixed conclusion, and a conclusion fixed before the thinking starts is not thinking.

    Why is the term circular?

Because it explains the staying by describing the person: you stay because you are codependent, and you are codependent because you stay. The archive breaks the circle at the reasoning instead, which has a shape and a start time.

What is the body signal before the reasoning starts?

A weight across the shoulders and upper back, arriving when the cost comes into view rather than when the situation gets worse. That timing is the tell: it fires at the accounting rather than at the harm.

Is wanting to help people a bad thing?

No, and nothing here suggests otherwise. Helping is a choice made about a situation and varies with it. This arrives before the situation has been assessed and reaches the same answer regardless.

Is this page telling me to leave?

No. Nothing in this archive tells anybody to end anything. What is on offer is the difference between a decision and a sequence, and what you do with it stays entirely yours.

Why do I feel guilty when I think about my own needs?

Because a claim that your cost counts is exactly what this program was written to prevent. The guilt arrives on schedule rather than in proportion, which is what makes it mechanical rather than moral.

    Is codependency a diagnosis?

No, and it never was a clinical category. It is a widely used descriptive term. This archive makes no clinical claims either, and offers a sequence with a marker and a timing instead.

Where do I read the full file?

It is linked from this page and it is free in full, written in the second person and about your own body. Nothing in it is gated and there is nothing to buy in order to read it.
