Why am I obsessed with someone who treats me badly?

Read on. The three files this could belong to are named below.

    CROSS-REFERENCE: THREE FILES

The obsession is not really about them. It is about what the pull feels like in your body. They go quiet, or cold, or say something that stays with you for days. Then they come back warm and the whole day lifts. You know how they treat you. You think about them anyway, more than about anyone who treats you well.

That split between knowing and wanting is why you are asking. Read this page for the order of events, not for a ruling on you. The ruling is the one thing it will not give you.

    Before anything else

If this person has hurt you, frightened you, or controls where you go or what you spend, that comes first. This page is about a pull. It is not about staying safe, and it is not the place for that.

If you are afraid of them, or of what happens when you say no, start here instead.

    In the United States:

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Confidential, around the clock, and they talk about safety planning as well as leaving.

    Emergency services: 911.

Calling does not commit you to leaving or to anything else. It is a conversation.

Pattern work is not a substitute for real help and it is not more urgent than it. This page will still be here afterward.

Does being obsessed with them mean something is wrong with me?

That question asks for a verdict, and a verdict has no parts. Weak, needy, damaged, stupid. Whichever word you land on, it just sits there. You cannot catch a word about yourself in the act. You can only carry it.

There is a smaller question that does have parts. Not what is wrong with me. What happens in my body in the seconds before I check, reply, or reach for them.

This is not who you are. It is a sequence with an order.

Why does someone who treats me badly take up so much room?

Because warmth that arrives on no schedule is louder than warmth that arrives every day. When kindness is steady, the body has nothing to wait for. When it comes and goes, every return lands like a win. So the person who is hard to read gets the attention. The person who is easy to read gets filed as calm, or dull.

The pull is recognition. It is not an assessment of the person. Something in the rhythm feels familiar, and familiar reads as chemistry. That is why the warning you saw early on did not stop you. You were right about the warning. The pull simply arrived faster.

    [MECHANISM]

The order is cue, body, thought, window, behavior, relief.

The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is often a message after a silence, or their name on the screen.

The body signal, what you feel as the pattern starts, is a lift or a charge in the chest and a lean forward.

The window, the few seconds before the behavior, is about three to seven seconds. That is a working figure, not a measured one.

Then the behavior: you reply, you check, you drive over. Then relief. Relief is what keeps the circuit, the whole sequence from cue to relief, running.

Is being this obsessed the same as being in love?

This page cannot answer that for you. What it can point at is a difference you can check. Obsession runs on not knowing. It is loudest after they pull back and quietest when things are steady. If the feeling peaks on the days you are least sure of them, you are looking at the pull, not at a measure of how much they matter.

None of that is a ruling on them. The archive does not issue verdicts about people it cannot see. It describes the sequence on your side, because that is the side you can reach.

Why am I obsessed with someone who treats me badly?

Because the pull answers to familiarity and uncertainty, not to how you are treated. A charge in the chest arrives when they come back after going cold. Your attention locks on, the thought arrives that this time is different, and you act on it. Relief follows. That relief is what keeps the sequence running, and it is why knowing better has never been enough to stop it.

    Which pattern would this be?

Three files answer this question more often than the rest. They separate on the body and the timing, not on the story. Read the three below for the moment you recognize physically.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

For three days, notice the charge in your chest when their name appears.

Do not try to stop anything yet. Name it out loud, quietly: there is the pull.

Write down what happened just before it. That is the cue.

Pattern Archaeology, the optional work of asking where a pattern was learned, can wait. You do not need to know where the pull came from to catch it. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.

    THE FILES THIS POINTS AT

Read for the body signal rather than for the description: what you feel, and when. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.

    • Attraction to Harm

If the pull gets stronger after they go cold, and a charge in the chest arrives with every message.

Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?

    • The Disappearing Pattern

If the people who treat you well are the ones you drift away from, once it starts going right.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

    • The Draining Bond

If you are already in it, and every reason you count lands on staying.

Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why am I obsessed with someone who treats me badly?

Because the pull answers to familiarity and uncertainty, not to how you are treated. Warmth that comes and goes lands harder than warmth that stays. Each return brings relief, and relief keeps the sequence running.

Does this mean something is wrong with me?

That question asks for a verdict, and a verdict gives you nothing to work with. The narrower question is what happens in your body in the seconds before you check or reply. That has parts, and parts can be caught.

Why do I want them more when they pull away?

Because not knowing is what feeds the pull. When they go cold, the body waits for the return. When the return comes, the relief is large. The cycle makes the cold stretches part of the attraction.

Why do kind people feel boring next to them?

Because steady kindness gives the body nothing to wait for. The charge in the chest needs uncertainty. Calm reads as flat to a system tuned for the swing, which is a fact about the tuning and not about the kind person.

    Is this love or obsession?

That is not a ruling this page can make. One thing you can check is timing. If the feeling peaks on the days you are least sure of them, you are looking at the pull rather than a measure of how much they matter.

    What is the body signal?

A lift or a charge in the chest, often with a lean forward, as if something has to be decided right now. It arrives about three to seven seconds before you reply, check, or reach for them.

Why can't I stop thinking about them?

Because each thought is a small rehearsal of the return, and the return brings relief. The thinking is part of the sequence, not a sign that the person is special. Catching the charge in the chest is where it can be interrupted.

    Is this my fault?

The pull was learned, and you did not choose to learn it. What you do inside the window is yours. Both are true at once, and holding both is the only place anything changes from.

What if I am afraid of them?

Then that comes first, and this page is not the place for it. The routes at the top of this page are for exactly that. Reaching out does not commit you to anything.

Do I need to know where this came from?

No. Pattern Archaeology, asking where it was learned, is optional work between moments. You can catch the charge in the chest without knowing its history. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.

What do I do when they message after a silence?

Catch the charge before you open it. Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Then wait a few minutes before you reply, and notice whether the urge is the same size afterward.

    THE ARCHIVES

If you want the narrower question answered rather than the verdict, the assessment names which sequence is running, and costs nothing.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
