Why can't I make a decision about my relationship?
Next time the decision comes up and you step back from it, notice where it starts in your body.
CROSS-REFERENCE: THREE FILES
The decision has been open for months. You have made lists. You have asked friends. You have lain awake running both versions of the next five years. Each time you get close to an answer, something pulls you back to the start.
So now you are asking a second question: what is wrong with me that I cannot decide. That question asks for a verdict, and this page will not give you one. Notice instead what your body does in the seconds before you put the decision off again. Then read the three files below with that in mind.
Why does asking what is wrong with me never help?
Because a verdict has no parts. Weak, cold, scared of commitment, too picky: whichever label you land on, it just sits there. It does not tell you what to do on Sunday night when the question comes back. You cannot interrupt a conclusion about yourself. You can only carry it.
A pattern has parts. The circuit is the sequence of steps a pattern runs: the cue, the first thing that sets it off, then a body signal, a thought, the behavior and the relief. The body signal is what you feel as the pattern starts. Each step is something you can watch.
This is not who you are. It is a pattern running.
What does it look like from the inside?
It looks like being careful. You want to get this right. You owe it to them, and to yourself, not to rush. Each reason to wait sounds fair. That is why it is hard to see as a sequence.
[MECHANISM]
The cue is the moment the decision gets close: a talk about moving in, a hard week, a friend asking what you will do.
The body signal comes first, three to seven seconds before you act. That figure is a working one, not a measurement.
Then comes the move: change the subject, add one more item to the list, or wait for a clearer sign. Relief follows, and relief keeps the sequence running.
The window is the few seconds between that signal and the move. Nothing has been put off yet inside it. That is the part you can reach.
How do I tell which file this is?
By the body, not the story. Three files can hold a decision open, and each one starts in a different place.
The Perfectionism Trap, where an unfinished thing cannot be judged, starts as a set jaw. The decision waits until it can be made without any chance of being wrong. The Disappearing Pattern, which fires when things go right rather than wrong, starts as a band around the chest. The doubt gets loudest after the good weeks. The Draining Bond, where the reasoning reaches the same answer whatever the facts, starts as a weight across the shoulders. Every list comes out at staying for now.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, write down each time the decision comes up and you put it off.
Note what brought it up, and where in the body it started: jaw, chest or shoulders.
Do not try to decide anything yet. You are only finding which file is yours.
Why can't I make a decision about my relationship?
Because an open decision cannot be wrong. As long as it stays open, you never have to live with the cost of either answer. That relief is real, and it pays out every time you put it off. The question is not too hard. It is being held open by a sequence. Watch the moment you step back from it this week.
Is it the relationship, or is it me?
This page cannot answer that, and it will not try. A ruling on your partner would be a guess about a person it has never met. What you can check is your own record. If the same stall shows up with a job, a flat or a city, the decision is not only about this person. Write down the other places it has shown up.
What does my partner see?
They see the move, not the body signal. They see the talk that gets moved to next month. They see the plan that never gets booked. They cannot see the set jaw or the band across your chest. You can. If you want to, tell them what happens in you just before you step back. That is a record, not an admission of fault.
Can this change, or is this just how I am?
Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. You may have known for a long time that you avoid this decision. Knowing arrives after you have put it off. The sequence does not wait for it.
Each of the three files below carries its own script for the window, built for its own body signal. Start with the one whose signal you found. Between moments, you can look at where this was learned, if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is also a complete answer.
THE FILES THIS POINTS AT
Read for the body signal rather than for the description: what you feel, and when. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.
- The Perfectionism Trap
A set jaw, and the decision held back until you can be sure it is the right one.
Why can't I finish anything?
- The Disappearing Pattern
A band around the chest, and the doubt growing loudest after a close, good week.
Why do I push people away when they get close?
- The Draining Bond
A weight across the shoulders, and the reasoning landing on the same answer every time.
Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?
Questions people ask about this
Should I stay or leave my relationship?
This page does not rule on that. It cannot see your relationship. What it can show you is the sequence that keeps the question open, and where it starts in your body.
Why do I keep going back and forth about my relationship?
Often because each answer brings its own body signal. Getting close to one sends you back to the other. Watch what happens in the body just before you switch.
Is being unable to decide a sign I should leave?
No. Being unable to decide is a fact about the deciding, not a ruling on the relationship. Look at the sequence first: cue, body signal, then the step back.
Why do I wait for a sign before I decide?
A sign would make the choice for you, so it could not be wrong. That is The Perfectionism Trap in a relationship. An unmade decision cannot be judged.
Why do I doubt my relationship most after a good week?
That shape belongs to The Disappearing Pattern. It fires when things go right. Notice whether a band around the chest arrives as things get closer.
Why do all my lists end with staying for now?
That can be The Draining Bond. The reasoning lands on the same answer whatever went into it. Watch for a weight across the shoulders before you start the list.
What is the body signal?
It is what you feel as the pattern starts. A set jaw, a band around the chest, or a weight across the shoulders. It comes a few seconds before you put the decision off.
What is the window?
It is the few seconds between the body signal and the move. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measurement. Nothing has been put off yet inside it.
How long is it normal to be unsure about a relationship?
There is no set length, and this page will not give one. The more useful question is whether the same stall runs on the same cue each time. Count those moments for a week.
Do I need to know where this started?
No. You can look between moments if you want to. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
Is this a clinical claim?
No. This archive makes no clinical claims and names nothing you have. It describes an observed sequence with a body signal and a timing.
THE ARCHIVES
If you want the narrower question answered rather than the wide one, the assessment names which sequence is running.
