The Archivist Method

    FILE: ARCH-NAM-001  /  STATUS: ACTIVE

What is it called when you push people away?

    PATTERN: The Disappearing Pattern

It has a name and a timestamp. In this archive it is filed as The Disappearing Pattern, and the name is doing one specific job: it separates a sequence you are running from a conclusion about the kind of person you are.

You came looking for a term rather than a cause, which is a different search and it deserves a straight answer rather than four paragraphs of setup. So here it is, and then here is what it is not.

    What is The Disappearing Pattern?

Withdrawal that follows closeness rather than conflict. It does not fire when things go wrong. It fires when things go right, which is the whole reason it has been so hard to see, because nobody looks for the cause of a problem inside a good week.

The withdrawal is rarely dramatic. You get quieter. You answer slower. You find a reason this week is bad for plans. From the outside none of it looks like leaving, which is why nobody names it, including you.

    [PATTERN SNAPSHOT]

Cue: closeness increasing. A good stretch, a label, a declaration, a plan made further out than usual.

Body: a band around the chest, one notch too tight. Breath high and shallow.

    Gap: three to seven seconds.

Behavior: distance in increments. Slower replies, thinner plans, a vague answer, a cancelled evening.

Relief: the exposure drops. That relief is why the sequence keeps repeating.

What are the other names for this?

Several, and most of them are describing the same behavior from a different distance. It is worth being straight about what each one gets right, because you have probably already met two or three of them.

These are the terms people arrive holding, and none of them is wrong:

    • “avoidant attachment”
    • “emotionally unavailable”
    • “fear of intimacy”
    • “is pushing people away a trauma response”
    • “commitment issues”

Each of those describes the shape accurately and each stops at the same place. They tell you what kind of person does this and where it may have come from. What none of them supplies is the moment, and the moment is the only part that is reachable: a physical event, then a gap, then the behavior.

That is not a claim that this archive's name is better. It is a claim about what a name is for. A label sorts you. A file gives you a start time.

    What is it not?

It is not a preference for being alone. People running this want closeness and run from it in the same week, sometimes in the same hour, and both are true at once because they run on different systems and only one of them is fast.

It is not a diagnosis. This archive makes no clinical claims and issues no diagnoses. A pattern is an observed sequence with a body marker and a timing, which is a smaller and more useful thing than a category.

And it is not a verdict about whether you can love anybody. It fires hardest around the people who can cost you the most, which means its distribution is a map of what you are afraid of losing.

What does it feel like right before it fires?

For most people running this the first marker is the chest. A band around the ribs, one notch too tight. The breath goes shallow and high. Sometimes the throat closes slightly, sometimes the stomach drops while your face is still perfectly pleasant.

It is specific enough to timestamp. The chest tightens when their name comes up on the phone, before the message has been opened. Others describe it as feeling suffocated in a room where nothing at all has happened.

    [MECHANISM]

The chest band is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the behavior does.

The thought that follows it, this is moving too fast, I need space, they would not like the real version of me, is not the cause. It is the narration.

You are not constructing that story. You are receiving one.

    How is it interrupted?

Inside the gap, out loud, and then with the smallest opposite thing available. Not by understanding it better. You can understand this perfectly and watch it run anyway, because insight does not rewire and repetition does.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly enough that only you hear it:

Chest is tight. The exit is loading. I am not leaving this room.

Then do the smallest opposite thing available. Answer the message you were going to let sit. Say the plain sentence: I went quiet. It is not about you.

It has to be spoken, because the circuit runs below language, which is why thinking at it has never worked. You are putting a sound in the room the circuit did not predict. Whisper counts. Silent does not.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

    Questions people ask about this

What is it called when you push people away?

In this archive it is filed as The Disappearing Pattern: withdrawal that follows closeness rather than conflict. The defining feature is the timing. It fires after things go right rather than after things go wrong.

Is it the same thing as avoidant attachment?

They are describing the same behavior from different distances. The attachment account tells you what kind of person does this and where it came from. It does not name the physical event three to seven seconds before the behavior, and that event is the only reachable part.

Is pushing people away a trauma response?

It behaves like something learned rather than chosen, in a room where distance genuinely protected somebody. Where it came from explains the shape and does not stop it. The body marker is what you can act on tonight.

What is the difference between this and just needing space?

Timing and return. A real limit gets stated before it is needed, keeps a shape, and the person who stated it comes back. This arrives after a good stretch, in increments, and has no return in it.

Does it have a body signal?

Yes, and for most people running this it is the chest: a band around the ribs one notch too tight, breath high and shallow. It arrives before any thought explains it, which is what makes it usable as a starting gun.

    Is this a diagnosis?

No. This archive makes no clinical claims and does not diagnose anybody. A pattern is an observed sequence with a marker and a timing, which is smaller than a category and considerably more useful.

Why do I do it to people I actually like?

Because only they can cost you anything, and cost is what the sequence reads. People you are indifferent to never activate it, which is exactly why the pattern feels like proof that you cannot love anyone and is proof of the opposite.

How many of these patterns are there?

Nine, and the set is closed. Most people run one that fires most often plus at least one that covers for it, which is why interrupting the first sometimes surfaces the second.

    Am I emotionally unavailable?

That is a label and labels are yours to claim or refuse. What can be confirmed here is the mechanism: a chest band, a gap of three to seven seconds, and a behavior that fires the same way each time. The mechanism is interruptible. The label is not.

    Where does it come from?

Usually a room where distance worked. Someone left, or stayed and went cold, or affection arrived with conditions and got withdrawn without warning. A child watching that does the intelligent thing available and leaves first, so the leaving belongs to them.

Can it be interrupted without knowing where it started?

Yes. Finding the room reduces shame and explains the shape, and it is the one optional part. You do not need to understand your pattern to interrupt it.

Where do I read the full file?

It is linked from this page and it is free in full, written in the second person and about your own body. Nothing in it is gated and there is nothing to buy in order to read it.
