    Is this a savior complex?

Read this for the part the label leaves out: the sequence that fires before the helping starts.

    CROSS-REFERENCE: ONE FILE

The label names the help you give. Somebody is struggling, you move toward them before anybody asked, and afterward you are tired in a way that help should not leave you.

That is accurate about what comes out. It says nothing about what goes in, which is a sequence that fires before the helping starts. Read this page for that sequence. It is the only part you can reach.

    What the label gets right

That the urge is real and that it repeats. It is not one generous week. It is the same move toward the same kind of person, in friendships, at work, and hardest of all in the romantic version, where the person you chose was somebody who needed rescuing.

It is right that this is not the same as compassion. You asked when one becomes the other, and the fact that you asked means you have felt the difference. Compassion leaves you steady. This leaves you emptied.

And it is right about the cost. The help lands on the other person. The bill lands on you, and it arrives late, as a flatness you have been calling tiredness.

    Where it stops

At the help. The label describes the output and calls it a complex, which is a verdict about your character. A verdict has no cue, nothing that sets it off, no timing, and nowhere to put your hand.

From inside, nobody decides to rescue. Someone near you goes flat, and a weight lands in your body as a task. You did not pick it up. It is yours by the time you notice. Three to seven seconds later the reasoning starts: they need me, nobody else will, it would be cruel to leave them with it.

That reasoning is the cover story, the explanation the pattern tells you so the helping sounds like a choice. Every sentence in it may contain something true. That is what makes it work. It arrives after the weight, never before.

The label also sets the wrong fix. Told you have a complex, you resolve to help less. But the helping is the last step. By the time there is helping to stop, the weight has landed and the story is already talking.

    When does compassion become this?

The difference is in the timing, not the amount. Compassion reads a situation and varies with it. It waits to find out what is wrong and whether help is wanted. This arrives at the same size before the situation has been read.

Run one check on your own record. The last time you stepped in, did you feel the weight before you knew what was wrong? Did you know what you would do before they finished telling you? If so, the sequence ran, and compassion was the name it gave itself afterward.

This is not a verdict on your kindness. The kindness is real. It is just not what pulled the lever, and knowing which one pulled it is what makes the two separable.

What is happening in the few seconds

A weight lands, usually in the chest or across the shoulders, the moment somebody near you goes flat. That is the body signal: what you feel as the pattern starts, before you move toward them.

    [MECHANISM]

The weight is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the reasoning does.

The thought that follows, they need me, I am the only one who gets it, is not the cause. It is the narration.

The relief of stepping in is the reinforcement. The weight lifts for a moment when you take the job, and that lift is why the sequence keeps closing.

Those seconds are the window: the three to seven seconds between the weight landing and the move toward them. A working figure, not a measured one. It is the only part of the sequence you can reach.

What are the underlying issues that cause it?

A sequence like this is usually learned somewhere it was the job. A room where one person's state governed the weather, and reading that state early was how the room stayed livable. Managing it was not a chore. It was the work.

Looking into that is optional. Pattern Archaeology: between moments, investigate where the pattern was learned, what it once accomplished, and what still keeps it running. Never while the weight is on you. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.

Knowing the origin explains the shape and does not stop the sequence. The weight does not consult your history before it lands. The few seconds after it are what you can work on tonight.

    How the sequence is interrupted

This is The Draining Bond, the pattern where another person's state becomes a job you cannot put down. Three moves work on it. Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly, at the weight:

There is the weight. Nobody asked. I am not picking this up yet.

Then ask one question before you move: do you want help with that, or do you want me to listen? Wait for the answer. The sequence cannot survive the wait.

It has to be spoken, because the sequence runs below language. Whisper counts. Silent does not. A late catch, after you have already stepped in, still counts as a repetition. Late catches are how this starts.

Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. The label is still yours to claim or refuse afterward. Once the weight is catchable, it matters much less than it did.

Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

    Is this a savior complex?

The label describes the output accurately and calls it a character trait. What is observable is a sequence: somebody goes flat, a weight lands in your body as a task, and a few seconds later the reasoning starts. That sequence has a start, and the start can be caught.

What is it called when a person has the urge to save others?

There are several popular names for it and this archive uses none of them. It files the urge under The Draining Bond, the pattern where another person's state becomes a job you cannot put down, because the urge is the first step of that sequence.

    When does compassion become this?

When it arrives before the situation has been read. Compassion waits to find out what is wrong and whether help is wanted. This lands as a weight at the first sign of someone going flat, and the reasoning that sounds like compassion arrives afterward.

What are the underlying issues that cause it?

Usually a room where reading one person's state early was the job. Looking into that is optional work between moments, never while the weight is on you. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer, and the sequence can be caught without it.

How do I change the romantic version?

The same way, with higher stakes. The weight lands when your partner goes flat, and the move toward them follows inside a few seconds. Catch the weight, say the line, and ask whether they want help before you give it.

What is the body signal before I step in?

A weight, usually in the chest or across the shoulders, that lands the moment somebody near you goes flat. It feels like a task arriving, and it arrives before any thought has explained what the task is.

What are the signs of this pattern?

Knowing what you will do before they finish telling you. Feeling the weight before you know what is wrong. Being tired afterward in a way that help should not leave you. Those are timing signs, and timing is what this page works with.

How do I deal with someone who has this?

This page is written for the person running the sequence, not for the person watching it. If this is somebody near you, the archive has files written for the observer, and this one will not turn its lens on them.

    Is helping people wrong?

No, and nothing here says so. Help that was asked for and that leaves you steady is not the sequence. The sequence is the weight that lands before anyone asks, and the page is about the few seconds after that weight.

Why am I so tired afterward?

Because the help was never the whole job. Reading someone's state, carrying it, and keeping it from getting worse is work that runs under everything else. The flatness is the bill for that work, arriving late.

Is this the same as not being able to leave someone?

It is the front end of the same sequence. The weight that makes you step in is the weight that makes leaving feel cruel later. The full file covers both ends, and this page is about the first.

Where do I read the full file?

It is linked from this page and it is free in full, written in the second person and about your own body. Nothing in it is gated.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
