Why do I keep ending up with the same kind of person?

    CROSS-REFERENCE: ONE FILE

Attracting is the wrong verb for this. That sounds like a technicality and it is the reason the search has never returned anything you could use, so it is worth spending a minute on before anything else.

The word describes you standing still while a certain kind of person arrives. That would make this weather. Weather cannot be interrupted, there is nothing in it with a start time, and so a page written in that grammar can only ever offer sympathy.

    So what is actually happening?

Selection, and it happens fast. Faster than assessment, which is the part that makes it feel like arrival rather than choice.

In a room of twenty people, something in you registers a specific set of conditions and produces a pull. Warmth that is not evenly distributed. Attention that has to be earned. A person whose mood you have to read rather than ask about. The pull arrives before you have had a conversation, and it arrives as chemistry.

The words people use for this are almost always the same three or four:

    • “why do I keep attracting toxic people”
    • “why am I attracted to toxic people”
    • “why does my toxic relationship feel addictive”
    • “is it love or a trauma bond”

Every one of those is describing something real. The first two put the mechanism outside you, and the third and fourth are closer, because they are asking about a physical state rather than a category of person. The physical state is the part with a handle on it.

Why do the wrong ones feel electric and the right ones feel like nothing?

Because what you are calling chemistry is recognition, and it has never once been an assessment. Your body is very good at identifying a familiar emotional environment and very bad at telling you whether that environment was good for you. Familiar and good were filed under the same heading a long time ago.

So a person who is consistent produces no spike, no scanning, no relief when the message finally arrives. There is no chase, so there is no charge, and your body reports back that there is nothing there. What you are calling boring is a nervous system at rest, which it has very little experience of and no vocabulary for.

What you call chemistry is your nervous system recognizing conditions it was trained on.

Does that mean I am choosing this?

It means a selection is happening in you, which is different from choosing it and much better news than the alternative. A selection has a moment in it. Weather does not.

It also does not mean you wanted to be treated badly, which is the accusation people brace for on a page like this. Nobody in this file wanted that. What was recognized was a schedule of warmth and absence, not a promise of harm, and the harm arrived afterward attached to the schedule.

And the knowing does not help, which is the part people are most ashamed of and the least interesting part of the record. You can name the warning sign out loud, in order, and want them anyway, because naming happens in one system and wanting happens in another and they do not share a wire.

How do I stop picking the same person in a different body?

Not by learning to spot them better. You already spot them, early and accurately, and it has never once stopped the pull. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.

The window is three to seven seconds wide. It opens at the stomach flip and it closes when you send, reply, agree, or drive over. Inside that gap nothing has committed to anything.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly enough that only you hear it:

Stomach flipped. That is recognition, not chemistry. I am not moving toward this yet.

Then ask the one question that separates the two: does this feel exciting, or does it feel like home?

Home is the answer that matters. When the pull turns out to be familiarity, the charge drops noticeably inside a minute or two and something in you goes quiet and a little sad. That drop is the pattern being seen, and it is also the first honest information you have had about that person.

Then expect the steady ones to keep feeling flat for a while. Calm registers as nothing until the system has enough repetitions to read it as safety instead of absence, and that recalibration is slower than the recognition.

    • Attraction to Harm

A flip in the stomach and an urgent forward lean, three to seven seconds before you reach for the phone.

Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why do I keep attracting toxic people?

Attracting is the wrong verb and correcting it is the useful part. Nothing is arriving. A selection is happening in you, faster than assessment, on a set of conditions your body learned to read as familiar. A selection has a moment in it that can be caught. Arrival does not.

Why do the wrong people feel electric?

Because the pull is recognition rather than assessment. Your body is identifying a familiar emotional environment, usually one built on inconsistent warmth, and it has no way of telling you whether that environment was good for you.

Why do kind people feel boring to me?

Because nothing is firing. Consistency produces no spike and no relief, and a system with little experience of rest reports that stillness as absence. What feels like boredom is often the first calm you have been in.

Why does a toxic relationship feel addictive?

Because intermittent reward is the strongest reinforcement schedule there is, and warmth that arrives unpredictably is exactly that. It is not a metaphor for how it feels. It is the wiring, and it is why the withdrawal when they go quiet is physical rather than emotional.

Does this mean I want to be treated badly?

No. What was recognized was a schedule of warmth and absence, not a promise of harm. The harm arrived afterward, attached to the schedule, and nobody in this file selected for it.

Why does knowing better not help?

Because knowing runs on one system and the pull runs on another, and they do not share a wire. You can name every warning sign in order and want them anyway, which is a timing problem rather than a failure of judgment.

What is the body signal before I chase someone?

A flip in the stomach, heat up the front of the chest, and an urgent forward lean, as though something is about to be decided in the next minute. It arrives three to seven seconds before you reach for the phone.

How do I tell familiarity from real attraction?

Ask whether it feels exciting or whether it feels like home, out loud, at the moment of the pull. When the answer is home, the charge drops inside a minute or two and something goes quiet, and that drop is the first honest information available about the person.

Why do I keep dating the same person in a different body?

Because the selection was never about the body. It was about the schedule: how warmth arrived, how it left, and how long you waited in between. Change the surface and the schedule stays identical.

How long before I stop finding steady people boring?

Longer than the recognition takes, which is worth knowing in advance. Calm reads as nothing until enough repetitions teach the body to read it as safety, and that recalibration is the actual work rather than the insight.

    Is this a trauma bond?

That phrase describes the grip accurately and from the outside. What it does not give you is the moment it can be reached, which is the flip in the stomach three to seven seconds before you move toward them. The name explains the hold. The gap loosens it.
