    Is the ick a pattern?

Read on. The two files this could belong to are named below.

    CROSS-REFERENCE: TWO FILES

The ick is a real body event. Something in you pulls back, fast, and the person on the other side has usually done nothing you could put in a sentence. Notice when it arrives before you decide what it means. The timing is the only evidence that holds.

The word is a good one. It names the recoil without pretending to explain it. That is also where it stops, and the stopping point is what sends people to a search box asking what is wrong with them.

    What the ick gets right

That it is in the body and not in the argument. Nobody reasons their way to the ick. It arrives, and the reasons arrive afterward, usually about a shoe or a text or the way they said your name. The word is honest about that order.

It is right that it is sudden. One day the person is fine and the next day you cannot stand the way they breathe. A feeling that switches that fast is not an opinion forming. It is a signal firing.

And it is right that you did not choose it. People who get the ick are not cruel. They are usually the ones asking what is wrong with them, which is not a question cruelty asks.

    Where it stops

At the moment. The word names when the recoil happened and nothing about what started it. Two very different sequences can produce the same recoil, and the word cannot tell them apart. The reasons that arrive afterward cannot either. They are narration, not cause.

So the advice that follows the word is thin. Get over it, or trust it. One tells you the recoil is nonsense and one tells you it is wisdom. Neither looks at what happened in the seconds before, which is the only place the answer is.

Look at the timing instead. Ask one question: what had they just done? The answer sorts the ick into one of two files, and the two need opposite work.

The ick that fires when they like you back

They say they like you. Or they text twice in a row, or reach for your hand in public. A few seconds later, the recoil. Before the recoil, a band tightens around the chest and the breath goes high and shallow. That is the body signal, the thing you feel in the chest as the pattern starts.

That is The Disappearing Pattern. It does not fire when things go wrong. It fires when things go right. Being liked back is exposure, and the sequence reads exposure as danger and opens distance. The ick is the distance arriving as a feeling about them.

The clue is that it goes away. Several people describe the ick fading after some time, often once the other person cools off a little. The recoil tracks their warmth, not their qualities. When it rises as they come close and drops as they step back, it is this file.

The ick that fires at kindness itself

A different shape. The kind one is not getting closer. They were always kind, and the ick was there from the start. Meanwhile somebody inconsistent, somebody who goes quiet for days, is still electric. Nothing about the kind person changed. Nothing fired.

That is Attraction to Harm. The pull is recognition. It has never once been an assessment. Your body was trained on a certain emotional weather, and it reads calm as absence. The nice one feels boring because nothing in you is scanning. The cold one feels alive because everything is.

    [MECHANISM]

Two signals, two files. A band around the chest when they come close is The Disappearing Pattern. The cue, the first thing that starts it, is their warmth.

A flat nothing with the kind one, while the stomach still flips for the cold one, is Attraction to Harm. The cue there is their inconsistency.

Both arrive three to seven seconds before the recoil becomes a decision. That is the window: the few seconds between the first signal and the behavior, where the sequence has not finished yet.

The test is the other person. If the cold one still lights you up, read the Attraction to Harm file. If nobody lights you up for long, and the ick arrives whenever anybody gets close, read The Disappearing Pattern.

    Which file do I read?

The one whose signal you can feel. This page does not carry a script, because the two sequences need opposite work and one script would be a guess with instructions attached. Each file carries its own, in full and free.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Next time the ick arrives, write down what they had just done. One line.

Then write what you felt first, before the recoil. A band in the chest, or nothing at all.

Then write who still feels electric this week. If it is somebody who runs hot and cold, that is your answer.

The notes do not change anything on their own. They tell you which file holds the different action. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does.

    THE FILES THIS POINTS AT

Read for the body signal rather than for the description: what you feel, and when. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.

    • The Disappearing Pattern

The ick that arrives as they come close. A band around the chest, then distance.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

    • Attraction to Harm

The ick at kindness itself, while the cold one still feels electric.

Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?

    Questions people ask about this

    Is the ick a pattern?

It can be the last step of one. The word names a real recoil and nothing about what started it. When the recoil arrives as somebody gets close, it is one file. When it sits on kind people while the cold one stays electric, it is another.

Why do I get the ick as soon as my crush likes me back?

Because being liked back is exposure, and The Disappearing Pattern reads exposure as danger. A band tightens around the chest a few seconds before the recoil, and the ick is distance arriving as a feeling about them.

Why does the ick go away after a while?

Usually because the other person cooled off, so the sequence stopped firing. The recoil tracks their warmth. That fading is good evidence: a real assessment of a person does not reverse when they step back.

Why am I repulsed by people who like me?

The word repulsed is sized to the feeling rather than to anything they did. A sequence is reading their warmth as a threat and opening distance. Nothing is wrong with you, and there is a moment in it you can learn to feel.

Why do I get bored with nice people?

Because nothing fires. A person who is consistent produces no scan, no wait and no relief, so the body reports nothing there. That is Attraction to Harm reading calm as absence, and it is a reading rather than a fact.

How do I tell which one it is?

By what they had just done, and by who still feels electric. Ick after they got closer is The Disappearing Pattern. Ick at kindness from the start, with an inconsistent person still exciting, is Attraction to Harm.

Should I trust the ick or ignore it?

Neither on its own. Sometimes a recoil is information about a person. Sometimes it is a sequence finishing. The timing tells them apart: a recoil that arrives seconds after they come close, and fades when they pull back, is the sequence.

What is the body signal before the ick?

For the first file, a band around the chest and high shallow breath as they come close. For the second, a flatness with the kind one while the stomach still flips for the cold one. Both arrive before the recoil, not after.

    Is something wrong with me?

A sequence is running, which is smaller than a verdict and more usable than one. It has a cue, a body signal and a few seconds in front of the behavior. That is a thing you can catch. A verdict is not.

Can I stop getting the ick without a partner changing anything?

Yes. The sequence runs in you, in the seconds after the signal. The interruption does not need anybody else to do anything. Who feels electric changes later, after the body has had enough repetitions to read calm as calm.

What if I get both kinds?

People do. One can run with a warm person and the other with a cold one in the same month. Catch whichever signal you can feel this week. The interruptions are specific, and each file carries its own.

Where do I read the full files?

Both are linked from this page and both are free in full, written in the second person and about your own body. Nothing in them is gated and there is nothing to buy in order to read them.

    THE ARCHIVES

If you want to know which of the two is running most often for you, the assessment names it.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
