    Is self-sabotage a real thing?

    CROSS-REFERENCE: ONE FILE

It is real and the name misleads. Sabotage implies an agent with an aim, working against you from inside, and that is not what the record shows in a single case.

What the record shows is timing. The moves arrive during good stretches rather than after difficulties, and they arrive as sound reasoning rather than as destruction.

    What the term gets right

That it is patterned rather than random, and that it is not bad luck. People running this can list four occasions with dates, and the occasions rhyme, which is exactly what a sequence looks like from the outside.

It is right that it happens to capable people and that competence does not protect against it. If anything the opposite: more capability produces more things that work, and things that work are the cue.

And it is right that willpower has not touched it. Everybody running this has already tried wanting it more, and wanting it more is not a mechanism.

    Where the word goes wrong

At the intent. Sabotage means deliberate damage, and once that word is in place the reader starts hunting for a part of themselves that wants to fail. That hunt returns nothing, because there is no such part, and the failure to find it usually gets filed as further evidence of something wrong with them.

What actually arrives is good judgment, delivered at the wrong moment. The role is not quite right. The timing is bad for this. The person is moving too fast. Each of those is a reasonable sentence and each of them arrived after a physical event rather than before one, which is the only reliable way to tell reasoning from narration.

The phrasings people arrive with are consistent, and the second and third are asking the wrong question well:

    • “is self-sabotage a real thing”
    • “why do I self sabotage”
    • “why do I ruin good things on purpose”
    • “is self-sabotage a trauma response”

On purpose is the phrase to drop. Nothing here is on purpose, and dropping it is not a way of letting yourself off. It is a way of pointing at the correct place, which is three to seven seconds earlier and considerably less dramatic.

    What is actually happening

A scan, and it starts during the good news rather than after it. Watch what your body does while somebody is congratulating you: for most people running this, something tightens instead of opening, and a quick involuntary search begins for what is wrong with this, what the catch is, what is going to be taken back.

    [MECHANISM]

The scan is the first domino. It arrives three to seven seconds before the small explainable move does.

A rise is a distance to fall. A system that has only watched good things get taken back starts the accounting on arrival.

The reasoning that follows is not the cause. It is the narration, and it is fluent because narration is fluent by design.

The moves themselves are rarely dramatic, which is why this hides so well. A missed follow-up, a lowered number, a fortnight of unanswered messages, a decision that each survive scrutiny on their own and add up over about six weeks to the good thing being gone.

    How the sequence is interrupted

By catching the scan during the good news, which is the least intuitive instruction in the archive and the correct one. Not by wanting it more. Insight does not rewire. Repetition does.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

Out loud, quietly, while the good news is still happening:

The scan is running. This is altitude, not danger. I am not adjusting anything today.

Then make no decision about the good thing for forty-eight hours. Not a smaller one. None.

The delay is the whole technique, because the sequence needs a decision inside the window where the reasoning still sounds like judgment. Given two days, the same reasoning stops being persuasive on its own, without anybody having to argue with it.

A failed interruption is still an interrupted sequence. Catching it after the number has already been lowered still counts as a repetition.

Why do I sabotage myself when things are going well?

    Questions people ask about this

    Is self-sabotage a real thing?

Yes, and the word misleads. Sabotage implies deliberate damage and there is no part of you working toward failure. What arrives is good judgment delivered at the wrong moment, during good news rather than after trouble.

    Why do I self sabotage?

Because a rise is a distance to fall, and a system that has only watched good things get taken back starts the accounting as soon as one arrives. The scan begins while the good news is still being said.

Do I ruin good things on purpose?

No, and dropping that phrase is not a way of letting yourself off. It points at the correct place, which is three to seven seconds before the move and considerably less dramatic than intent.

    Is self-sabotage a trauma response?

It behaves like something learned, in conditions where an increase reliably preceded a loss. Where it came from explains the shape and does not stop it. The scan during good news is the part with a handle on it.

Why does wanting it more not help?

Because wanting is not a mechanism, and everybody running this has already tried it. The sequence does not fire because you want the thing insufficiently. It fires because you have it.

    What is the body signal?

A scan for what is wrong, starting during the good news rather than after it. For most people something tightens rather than opening while they are being congratulated, and the searching begins before any thought explains it.

Why do the moves look so reasonable?

Because they are reasoning-shaped by construction. The narration arrives after the physical event, already fluent, and it is always the most sensible available version of the objection. The test is whether the conclusion was fixed before the thinking started.

Why do I feel nothing when I get what I wanted?

Because the scan started before the feeling could and took the whole room with it. That is not ingratitude, it is capacity spent on a threat assessment nobody asked for, and it is a strong signal for this file specifically.

How does the forty-eight hour delay work?

The sequence needs a decision inside the window where the reasoning still sounds like judgment. Given two days, the same reasoning stops being persuasive on its own, and nobody has to argue with it.

Is this the same as fear of success?

That phrase names the shape and stops there. It also pairs badly with fear of failure, which sends people looking for which one they have. There is a separate page on that pairing and the body marker settles it.

    Is this a diagnosis?

No. This archive makes no clinical claims and does not diagnose anybody. A pattern is an observed sequence with a marker and a timing, which is smaller than a category and considerably more usable.

Where do I read the full file?

It is linked from this page and it is free in full, written in the second person and about your own body. Nothing in it is gated and there is nothing to buy in order to read it.
