The Archivist Method

    FILE: ARCH-BRG-002  /  STATUS: ACTIVE

Am I protecting myself or am I running?

    CROSS-REFERENCE: TWO FILES

Both look identical from outside the body. Somebody states a limit and steps back. From where anybody else is standing there is no way to tell whether that was a decision or a withdrawal wearing the language of one.

From inside there is a way, and it is not a feeling. Feelings are the least reliable instrument available here, because a withdrawal that has found the right vocabulary feels excellent.

Why is this so hard to tell apart?

Because the vocabulary of limits is the best cover story a withdrawal has ever been handed, and it is not the cover story's fault. The language is good, it describes something real, and an enormous amount of genuinely useful work has been written in it.

Which is exactly what makes it usable as cover. A withdrawal that calls itself protecting your peace is unarguable. Nobody can dispute it. It requires no explanation, it is endorsed by every book on the shelf, and anybody who questions it can be filed as the reason it was necessary.

People catch themselves doing this and go looking for it in these words, which is the honest version of the question:

    • “is my need for space a boundary or is it avoidance”
    • “I called it a boundary and it was a wall”
    • “how do I tell the difference between a boundary and a wall”
    • “am I protecting my peace or avoiding people”

The second of those is not a question. It is a finding, arrived at afterward, usually months afterward, and it is the most useful sentence in the set.

    What is the actual test?

Three things, and none of them is how it feels. Timing, shape, and return.

    [PATTERN SNAPSHOT]

TIMING. A decision is made before it is needed, usually in a calm week. A withdrawal is made after a good stretch, in the hour it is needed.

SHAPE. A decision has an edge you can describe: what, with whom, how much. A withdrawal is general and expands quietly to fit whatever it has to.

RETURN. A decision has a return in it. The person who made it comes back to the room. A withdrawal has no return date, and the distance starts arguing for itself.

Run those three over the last time you stepped back from somebody. Not the story you told about it. The dates.

What if it is genuinely both?

It very often is, and that is not a failure of the test. A limit can be entirely correct and also arrive because a sequence fired. The person may genuinely be too much for you, and the timing of your discovering that may still be perfectly on schedule.

So the useful question is not which one it was. It is whether the timing was yours. A correct limit reached by a sequence is still a correct limit, and it will hold up next week when you check it in a calm hour. One that only exists because the chest went tight will not.

That is the entire practical difference and it takes a week to find out. Nothing about this requires you to go back on anything today.

What if the answer is that I am running?

Then you have found the sequence rather than a fault, and the file for it is linked below. Nothing about that finding obliges you to reopen a door you closed, and it does not convert somebody who treated you badly into somebody you owe access to.

It also does not mean you have been lying. Almost nobody running this has been lying. The narration arrives after the physical event and it arrives fluent, which is what makes it so convincing from inside.

You are not constructing that story. You are receiving one.

What if I cannot state a limit at all?

Then this page is the opposite of your problem and the second file below is the one to read. It is worth saying plainly, because a page about limits used as cover is unhelpful and occasionally harmful for a reader who has never managed to state one.

Those two readers arrive at the same search from opposite directions. One says no easily and calls it a decision. The other cannot say it at all and calls that decency. Both are cover stories and they are covering for different sequences.

    THE FILES THIS POINTS AT

Read for the body marker rather than for the description. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.

    • The Disappearing Pattern

If the limit appears after a good stretch and has no return date in it.

Why do I push people away when they get close?

    • The Draining Bond

If you cannot state a limit at all, and this page is the opposite of your problem.

Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Is my need for space a boundary or is it avoidance?

Three tests, none of them a feeling. Timing: was it decided in a calm week or in the hour it was needed. Shape: does it have a describable edge or is it general. Return: is there a return in it. A withdrawal fails the third almost every time.

How do I tell the difference between a boundary and a wall?

A wall has no return date in it and expands quietly to fit whatever it has to. A limit has an edge you can state out loud, was decided before it was needed, and the person who set it comes back to the room.

Why does avoidance feel so much like a good decision?

Because the narration arrives after the physical event and it arrives fluent. It sounds like judgment because judgment is what it is imitating, and the vocabulary of limits is the most unarguable cover story available.

What if the limit is genuinely correct?

Then it will still be correct next week when you check it in a calm hour, and that check is the whole test. A correct limit reached by a sequence is still correct. One that exists only because the chest went tight will not survive the week.

Does this mean I have to let everybody back in?

No. Finding the sequence does not oblige you to reopen a door, and it does not convert somebody who treated you badly into somebody owed access to you. It tells you which part of the decision was timing rather than judgment.

Have I been lying to people about it?

Almost certainly not. The reasoning arrives after the body event, already fluent, and you were receiving it rather than composing it. That is a mechanical description rather than an excuse, and it is not an admission of guilt either.

What is the body signal before a withdrawal that calls itself a decision?

For most people running that file it is the chest: a band around the ribs one notch too tight, breath high and shallow, arriving before any thought explains it. The vocabulary shows up three to seven seconds later.

Am I protecting my peace or avoiding people?

Check whether the peace arrived. A limit that was a decision produces a quieter week. A withdrawal produces a quieter week and a slow accumulation of people you used to be close to, and the second one is measurable.

What if I cannot set a limit at all?

Then this page is the opposite of your problem, and the file to read is The Draining Bond rather than The Disappearing Pattern. Both readers arrive at this same search from opposite directions.

Is one of these worse than the other?

Neither is a moral position and the archive does not rank them. They cost differently. One accumulates distance you did not intend, the other accumulates load you cannot carry, and both are sequences rather than character.

How do I stop using the language as cover?

Catch the physical event rather than auditing the vocabulary. By the time you are choosing words the sequence has already run. The marker arrives first and that is where the interruption fits.

Which of the nine patterns is this?

Usually The Disappearing Pattern if you step back easily and call it a decision, and The Draining Bond if you cannot step back at all. Both files are free to read in full and both are linked from this page.
