Why do I sabotage my relationships?
Read on. The three files this could belong to are named below.
CROSS-REFERENCE: THREE FILES
It ends, and you were the one. Not every time in the same way. A fight you started. A message you did not answer. A doubt that grew until it was a reason. Read back over the last two or three, and look for the point where it turned.
You may be asking what is wrong with you. That is a verdict. This page keeps a record instead, because a record has an order and an order can be caught.
Why does asking what is wrong with me never help?
Because the answer is a sentence about your character, and a character has no moving parts. You cannot interrupt a conclusion. You can only carry it into the next relationship.
A narrower question has parts. What happens in your body in the seconds before the move that ends it? That is a sequence. Sequences repeat, and repeating things can be caught.
This is not who you are. It is a sequence with an order.
What happens in my body before I pull it apart?
The moves feel like decisions. That is why they have hidden for so long. A thought arrives, the thought is reasonable, and you act on it. But the body moved first.
[MECHANISM]
The order is cue, body, thought, window, behavior, relief.
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is often closeness: a good night, a plan, the word love.
The body signal, what you feel as the pattern starts, may be a tight chest, a restless charge, or a fast heart.
The window, the few seconds before the behavior, is about three to seven seconds. It is a working figure, not a measured one.
Then the behavior, then relief. The relief keeps the circuit, the whole sequence, running.
Why do I sabotage my relationships?
Because something in you reads closeness as risk. The closer it gets, the more there is to lose. So it brings the level down with small moves, each with a reason. Ending it yourself feels survivable. Having it taken does not. That is often Success Sabotage, the pattern that arrives as good judgment at the wrong moment. It is a protection, running in rooms it was not built for.
Why do I sabotage a relationship that is going well?
Going well is the cue. A bad stretch feels familiar and asks nothing of the system. A good stretch is new height, and new height reads as danger. Watch what your body does during the good weekend, not after it. If a scan starts while you are happy, looking for the catch, that scan is the first step of the sequence.
Why do I sabotage a new relationship before it starts?
Before it starts, there is nothing yet to lose. Ending it there costs the least. So the doubt arrives early. The date was fine, but something felt off. You let the reply wait a day, then two. Notice whether the doubt has a fact behind it, or only a feeling that showed up right after a good evening.
Why do I sabotage things the moment I like someone, or they like me?
Liking someone is exposure. You want something you could lose. Being liked is exposure too, because now you can be seen up close and found short. Either moment can be the cue. Watch the hour after you notice you like them, or after they say they like you. The first move often comes then.
Why do I sabotage love every time it arrives?
Every time is the important part. A real problem varies with the person. A pattern arrives the same way with different people, at the same point, in the same order. If love keeps ending at month three, or the week after the first trip, read that as timing, not fate. Timing is something you can catch.
Why do I sabotage my marriage?
A marriage can hold this for years without ending. The moves get quieter. A cold week after a good anniversary. A plan you keep finding faults with. A distance you start just when it gets warm again. Look for the same move landing after the same kind of good moment. That repeat is the part you can work on.
Is this worry about the relationship, or is a pattern running?
Both can be true at once. Worry is a feeling. A pattern is a sequence with a move at the end. The test is what the worry makes you do. If it ends in the same move every time, like a fight, a test, or a long silence, a pattern is running. If the worry just sits there and passes, it may be only a feeling.
How do I tell whether I am sabotaging my relationship?
Read your history for timing. List the last three endings, or near endings. For each one, write what was going well just before it turned. If the turn keeps coming after a good stretch, and you made the move, you are looking at a sequence. Then note the body event in front of it. That event is your way in.
How do I stop sabotaging my relationships?
Three moves, in the order the pattern fires. Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. The exact words for the interruption sit on the file that matches yours.
Which pattern would this be?
Three files answer this more often than the rest, and they separate on the body. Success Sabotage scans during the good stretch and steps back. The Disappearing Pattern, the pattern that fires when things go right, goes quiet. The Testing Pattern, the pattern that needs love shown again, pushes to check whether the love holds.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, mark each good moment in your relationship.
Next to it, write what you felt in your body and what you did in the next hour.
Do not stop anything yet. Just count.
Pattern Archaeology, the optional work of asking where a pattern was learned, can wait. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
THE FILES THIS POINTS AT
Read for the body signal rather than for the description: what you feel, and when. Recognition in this work arrives as a flinch rather than as agreement. All of them are free to read in full.
- Success Sabotage
You feel a scan start while things are good, and a sensible reason to step back arrives after it.
Why do I sabotage myself when things are going well?
- The Disappearing Pattern
You feel a band around the chest after closeness, and you go quiet for days.
Why do I push people away when they get close?
- The Testing Pattern
You feel your heart go hard and fast, and you push to check whether the love holds.
Why do I test people who love me?
Questions people ask about this
Why do I sabotage my relationships?
Because something in you reads closeness as risk and brings the level down with small moves. Each move has a reason. The order underneath them is the same each time, and the order can be caught.
Why do I sabotage every relationship, not just one?
Because a pattern does not depend on the person. It runs on the same cue, in the same order, whoever is across from you. That repeat is what tells you it is a pattern.
Why does it happen when things are good?
Good is the cue. A good stretch is new height, and the system reads height as a place to fall from. Watch the body during the good weekend, not after it.
Am I a bad person for doing this?
That is a verdict, and a verdict has nothing in it you can use. You are describing a sequence. Sequences have a window, the few seconds before the behavior, and that is where you can act.
Is it a pattern or did I just not want the relationship?
Sometimes leaving is the right call. It is worth checking when the doubt always arrives at the same point, after a good moment, with no new fact behind it.
Why do I push away someone who treats me well?
Being treated well holds you in view. For a system built to avoid that, kindness can read as risk. If the push comes right after warmth, read The Disappearing Pattern file.
Why do I start fights when we are close?
A fight lowers the level of closeness to one that feels familiar. The relief after it keeps the move alive. Catch the tight chest before the first sharp word.
What is the body signal for this?
It depends on the file. A scan and restless charge for Success Sabotage. A band around the chest for The Disappearing Pattern. A hard fast heart for The Testing Pattern.
Can this actually change?
It changes by repetition rather than by deciding. Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. Late catches count, and so does every try.
Do I have to know why I do it to stop?
No. Pattern Archaeology, asking where a pattern was learned, is optional work between moments. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
THE ARCHIVES
If you want the narrower question answered rather than the verdict, the assessment names which sequence is running, and costs nothing.
