Is it okay for my partner to still talk to their ex?
Next time the ex's name comes up, notice your heart before you say anything.
PATTERN: The Testing Pattern
The ex's name lit up their phone. Maybe it was a birthday message. Maybe they talk every week. Either way, your chest tightened before you had decided what you thought.
You want to know if this is okay. Staying in touch with an ex is common, so for many couples the answer is yes. What counts as okay in yours is something the two of you agree. Start with the part that is yours: notice what your body did when the name came up.
What common does and does not tell you
It tells you that talking to an ex is not rare. Exes can share friends, a workplace, a town, or years of history that ended without a fight.
What it cannot tell you is what this contact means to your partner. Only they can say that. And it cannot tell you why the ex's name lands so hard on you. That second question is yours, and it can be answered.
Why okay is the wrong question here
Because okay asks for a ruling, and a ruling has no parts. Told it is fine, the tightness stays. Told it is not, you have a verdict on your partner and the same evening waiting for you next week.
[MECHANISM]
The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is the ex: a name on the screen, a mention, a like on an old photo.
The body signal, what you feel as the pattern starts, is a fast heart and a need to do something about it.
The window is the few seconds before the behavior, about three to seven seconds. It is a working figure, not a measured one.
Then the behavior: the questions about what they said, the scroll through the ex's page, the cold evening. Then relief, which keeps the circuit, the whole sequence, running.
If that order sounds familiar, it may be The Testing Pattern. That is the pattern where you push to find out when someone stops caring, and no answer holds for long.
Is it okay if my girlfriend still talks to her ex?
It is common, whether it is a text now and then or a regular call. Whether it is okay for you two is a conversation, not a rule this page can give. Her reasons are hers to share. If it worries you, ask her once, plainly, what the contact is about. Then listen to the whole answer before you reply.
Is it okay that my girlfriend is friends with her ex?
Some people stay friends with an ex because the friendship was always there under the relationship. This page cannot tell you what this one is. Neither can the tightness in your chest. What you can look at is your own next move. Do you ask about the ex often? Do you check? Write down the last time, and what came first.
Is it bad if my girlfriend still follows her ex?
A follow can be a choice, or it can be something nobody got round to changing. This page cannot tell which. Bad is a ruling on her, and it will not make one. What it can name is the checking a follow invites on your side: who liked what, who commented, when. Notice how often you look, and what your body did just before.
Is it okay if my boyfriend still talks to his ex?
It is common, and his reasons are his to give. This page will not rule on him or on her. It can help with the part that runs in you. When her name appears, does your heart speed up? Do you want to read the messages? Wait a few seconds before you act. Then, if you have a question, ask it in words.
Is it okay that my boyfriend is friends with his ex?
Some exes stay friends, and it is common enough not to mean anything on its own. What it means for you two is a conversation. If you have never had it, have it once, plainly, when you are calm. Say what worries you. Ask what the friendship is to him. Then notice whether you believe the answer, or start checking it.
Is it bad that my boyfriend still follows his ex?
A follow is easy to read as a message. It may not be one. This page cannot tell you what it means to him, and it will not call it bad. It can point at what it costs you. If you visit the ex's page more often than he does, the follow has become your sequence rather than his.
Is this doubt, or is this a pattern running?
Doubt can be answered. Ask a clear question, get a clear reply, and it settles for a while.
A pattern cannot be answered that way. Anything your partner says gets discounted, and the checking comes back anyway. If the same fast heart shows up first each time, you are looking at a sequence.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
For one week, write down each time the ex comes up and it stings.
Next to each one, write what you did in the next minute: asked, checked, scrolled, or went cold.
Notice whether your heart picked up first. Do not try to stop anything yet.
Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. The file below has the whole sequence and what to say instead.

- The Testing Pattern
A fast heart, then the checking and the question asked sideways.
Why do I test people who love me?
Questions people ask about this
Is it normal to stay friends with an ex?
It is common. Exes can share friends, work or years of history. Common is true and it settles nothing about what this contact means to your partner.
Should I ask my partner to stop talking to their ex?
That is for the two of you to decide. If you ask, ask once, plainly, and say what you are worried about. A request made in the heat of it tends to become a test.
Does it mean they still have feelings for their ex?
This page cannot tell you, and neither can a message. Only your partner can say what the contact means. Ask in words if you want to know.
Is it okay to read their messages with their ex?
Reading in secret is the checking, not the answer. It brings a moment of relief, and the relief keeps the sequence running. Ask in words instead.
Why do I look at the ex's page?
Looking brings brief relief, and relief keeps the sequence running. Each look can start it again. Count how often you look this week.
What is the body signal?
It is what you feel as the pattern starts. In The Testing Pattern it is often a fast heart and a restless need to act, a few seconds before you check or ask.
Am I being jealous of the past?
That is a verdict, and a verdict gives you nothing to do. The usable question is smaller: what did your body do in the seconds after the ex's name came up?
Why does it bother me more when things are going well?
Because a good stretch raises the stakes. The more they matter, the louder the question of where you stand. The tightness often grows when there is more to lose.
How do I talk about it without a fight?
Wait until your heart has slowed. Say what you feel, not what they did wrong. Ask one question, and listen to the whole answer before you reply.
Do I need to know where this comes from?
No. Looking at where a pattern was learned is optional work between moments. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The practice works without the history.
