Is it bad that my boyfriend reminds me of my dad?

Read on. The file this belongs to is named below, with the words to say when it starts.

    PATTERN: Attraction to Harm

Your boyfriend reminds you of your dad. Maybe it is a laugh, a way of standing, or the way he goes quiet. Noticing it can feel like catching yourself in something. Read on for the order of events, not for a ruling on you.

Bad is a verdict. A resemblance is a fact. The fact is worth looking at, and the verdict gets in the way of looking.

    Before anything else

If your dad frightened you, or your boyfriend frightens you now, that comes first. This page is about a resemblance. It is not about staying safe, and it is not the place for that.

If you are afraid of someone in your life, start here instead.

What bad does and does not tell you

Calling it bad would tell you to worry. Calling it fine would tell you to stop thinking. Neither tells you what is actually familiar, and that is the only part with any information in it.

A partner who shares your father's humor is not the same as a partner who shares his temper. Both can remind you of him. Only one of them is a question worth asking.

Why bad is the wrong question here

Because a ruling has no parts. You cannot watch it happen. A pull does have parts. It has a moment it starts, a feeling in the body, and a thing you do next.

So set the ruling down for now. Ask a smaller question instead: when he reminds you of your dad, what exactly is being remembered?

What the resemblance is actually reading

The body is good at spotting a familiar feeling. It is poor at telling you whether that feeling was good for you. Familiar and good can get filed together early.

Attraction to Harm is the name for one version of this: a pull toward the feeling you grew up around, read as chemistry. It is recognition, not an assessment of the person. It only applies if what feels familiar is the uncertainty. Warmth that came and went. Moods you had to read. Approval you had to earn.

    [MECHANISM]

The order is cue, body, thought, window, behavior, relief.

The cue, the first thing that sets it off, is often a moment of not knowing where you stand with him.

The body signal, what you feel as the pattern starts, is a flip in the stomach and heat in the chest.

The window, the few seconds before the behavior, is about three to seven seconds. It is a working figure, not a measured one.

Then you lean in harder. Then relief when he warms up again. That relief keeps the circuit, the whole sequence, running.

Is it bad that my boyfriend reminds me of my dad?

Not on its own. A resemblance is a fact, not a ruling. What matters is which part feels like home. If it is his steadiness or his humor, you may simply know what you like. If it is the not knowing, the guessing at moods, and a charge in your stomach when he pulls back, that is worth watching closely.

Is this familiarity, or is this a pattern running?

Ordinary familiarity feels calm. You know the shape of the person and you relax into it.

The pattern feels like a charge. It spikes when he is hard to read and drops when he is steady. If the steady days feel like nothing and the uncertain ones feel alive, you are looking at a sequence rather than a taste.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Write down three moments this week when he reminded you of your dad.

Next to each, write what he was doing: steady, warm, distant, or hard to read.

Notice whether your stomach flipped before any of them.

If the flips line up with the hard-to-read moments, the file below has the whole sequence and what to do in the window.

    THE FILE

One file, written in the second person, about your own body. Free to read in full.

    • Attraction to Harm

If the familiar part is the not knowing, and it arrives as a flip in the stomach and a forward lean.

Why am I attracted to people who hurt me?

    Questions people ask about this

Is it bad that my boyfriend reminds me of my dad?

Not on its own. A resemblance is a fact, not a ruling. The useful question is which part feels familiar. Steadiness and humor are one thing. Moods you have to guess at are another.

Why do I date men like my dad?

Sometimes because you know what you like. Sometimes because the body reads familiar as good. The difference shows up in what feels familiar: the calm, or the not knowing.

Does it mean something is wrong with me?

No. Noticing a resemblance is not a sign that something is wrong. It is information. What you do with the information is the part you can work with.

What if my dad was hard to be around?

Then look closely at which traits your boyfriend shares with him. If it is the hard part, the pull may be recognition rather than choice. If you are afraid of him, the support routes above come first.

What if my dad was kind and steady?

Then a partner who reminds you of him may simply feel like the calm you know. That is not a pattern. A pattern has a charge and a cost, and it repeats.

What is the body signal for Attraction to Harm?

A flip in the stomach, heat in the chest, and a forward lean. It arrives a few seconds before you chase, reply or agree to something you would not choose calmly.

    Is chemistry just familiarity?

Sometimes. A strong charge can be recognition of an old feeling rather than a read on the person. The charge reports that something is familiar. It does not report that it is good.

Should I tell my boyfriend he reminds me of my dad?

That is yours to decide. If you do, name the specific trait rather than the person. A trait is something you can both look at. A comparison is harder to hear.

Do I need to understand my childhood to change this?

No. Pattern Archaeology, asking where a pattern was learned, is optional work between moments. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer. The work happens in the window.

What do I do when I notice the pull?

Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Then wait a few seconds before you reply or reach. Ask yourself whether this feels exciting or like home.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
