Is it normal to stay with someone who drains you?

    PATTERN: The Draining Bond

Staying somewhere that costs you is common. Common enough that the answer to the heading is yes, and the yes will be waiting for you again next Sunday evening with nothing new in it.

Normal is a fact about a population. You are asking about a situation you have been leaving in your head for two years.

What common does and does not tell you

It tells you that staying is not evidence of weakness or of some deficiency other people do not have, which is the conclusion most people arrive here already holding.

What it cannot tell you is whether what is holding you is a fact or a piece of reasoning. That distinction is the entire question and it is answerable, which is more than can be said for the one in the heading.

Why normal is the wrong question here

Because both answers point the same way, which is at you. Told it is normal, you stay and the calculation runs again on Sunday. Told it is not, you now have a verdict and the calculation still runs on Sunday.

Nothing on this page will decide whether you leave. That decision is yours and nobody standing outside your life gets to hand it to you. What can be examined is whether the decision is currently being made by you at all.

    The one distinction that matters

A constraint is a fact. A mortgage, a visa, a person who depends on your income, a shared child, an illness. None of those is a pattern and none of them is what this page is about.

The reasoning is different, and it is identified by shape rather than content. Take the last three months and ask what the reasoning concluded each time. A good month produces stay. A terrible month produces stay with an explanation attached. When the conclusion is fixed before the reasoning starts, the reasoning is not reasoning.

The portability test settles it faster than anything else. Ask what the sentence was two situations ago, when the facts were completely different. If the conclusion was the same then, the facts are not what is producing it.

Is this commitment, or is this a pattern running?

Commitment is chosen and it can be reconsidered. It survives being examined, it can name what it is getting, and it does not require the examination to be avoided.

The other one arrives on the same cue, with the same weight across the shoulders, produces the same reasoning in the same order, and lands on the same answer every time. And it is portable: it turns up with a sibling, a colleague and a friend, which is the fastest way to find out what you are looking at.

If that reads as accurate, the file below has the marker, the window, and the delay that interrupts it. Free and in full.

    • The Draining Bond

Reasoning that sounds like decency and reaches the same answer whatever happened, and the weight that precedes it.

Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Is it normal to stay with someone who drains you?

Yes, in the only sense the word has: a great many people do it. That settles nothing, because you are asking about a situation you have been leaving in your head for two years rather than about a population.

How do I know if I should leave?

Nothing here decides that and nobody outside your life gets to. What can be examined is whether the decision is currently being made by you, or by reasoning that reaches the same answer whatever the month contained.

What if my reasons are real?

They usually are, and that is what makes the reasoning durable. A false reason would have been discarded years ago. The tell is the fixed conclusion across different circumstances rather than the accuracy of any one clause.

How do I tell a real constraint from an excuse?

Portability. Ask what the reasoning was two situations ago, when the facts were completely different. If the conclusion was the same with none of the current facts in place, the facts are not producing it.

    Is a mortgage a pattern?

No. A mortgage is a fact, and so is a visa, a shared child, or a person who depends on your income. None of those is what this page is about, and treating them as one would be a mistake in the other direction.

    What is the body signal?

A weight across the shoulders and upper back, arriving three to seven seconds before the reasoning starts. It turns up when the cost comes into view rather than when the situation gets worse.

Why do I feel guilty for wanting out?

Because wanting out is a claim that your cost counts, and that claim is what the sequence exists to prevent. The guilt arrives on schedule rather than in proportion, which makes it mechanical rather than moral.

Does staying mean I am weak?

No, and that conclusion is the one most people arrive holding. The reasoning that keeps you there is fluent and sincere and made of things you genuinely believe, which is precisely why it works.

    Is this a diagnosis?

No. This archive makes no clinical claims and does not diagnose anybody. It describes an observed sequence with a marker and a timing, and clinical questions belong with a clinician.

What if I am not safe?

Then that comes first and it is not a pattern question. In the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. Emergency services are 911. This will still be here afterward.
