REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Feeling drained is the flat, used-up tiredness that comes after time with a certain person, even when nothing hard happened.
The call ends and you feel flat. Not sad, not angry. Just used up, as if something was taken that you did not agree to give. Feeling drained is the plain phrase for that, and most people who use it can name exactly whose name sets it off.
This page treats the phrase as a clue. The tiredness is real. What it points to is a habit of giving that fires before you choose, and that part can be caught.
What it looks like
You see their name on the screen and something in you sinks before you read the message. You answer anyway. An hour later you hang up and cannot remember what you meant to do with your evening.
Or it is a visit. You drive home from a parent's house and sit in the car for ten minutes before you go inside. Nothing hard was said. You are wiped out anyway.
Other people do not do this to you. A different friend can talk for hours and you come away lighter. That difference is the clue.
Nothing happened, and you are still wiped out.
Drained by someone
This is how most people put it: drained by my mom, drained by a friend, drained by my partner. The phrase points at one person, and that makes sense. The tiredness does arrive with them.
But look at what happens on your side of the visit. You say yes to the extra hour. You take on their problem as if it were yours. You leave your own news unsaid. Each of those is a small giving, and each one fires fast.
Where the phrase stops
It is not a diagnosis and not a verdict on anyone. It is also not the same as a tiredness that is everywhere, all the time, with no person attached. That kind is worth taking to a doctor, not to this page.
Feeling drained also stops at the feeling. It tells you something was spent. It does not tell you how the spending happens. That part is a sequence. A need appears. Your stomach drops or your chest goes heavy. That is the body signal, the feeling that tells you the pattern is starting. Then you give, before you have checked if you have it to give.
In this archive that sits closest to The Draining Bond. It describes you staying in a bond that costs more than it returns, and finding you cannot step back.
What to do when you notice it
Pick the person whose name makes you sink. Wait for the next time it happens.
Feel the body signal: the sink, the heavy chest, the tiredness that arrives before the call does. Name what is starting: this is the giving before I have checked.
Say one short sentence out loud. I have until eight. Or: not this one, I am keeping tonight.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Leave at the time you said. Keep one part of your evening that is only yours. Say no to the extra hour, even if you say yes to the first one.
Count it as one rep, one repetition of the new action. Then notice how you feel afterward, and write one line about it. The record is yours to compare next time.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Questions people ask about this term
What does feeling drained mean?
It means a flat, used-up tiredness after time with someone. It often comes even when nothing hard was said or done.
Why do I feel drained after talking to certain people?
Often because the giving runs one way with them. You say yes, you listen, you carry their problem, and you do it before you have chosen to.
Why does my mom drain me?
This page will not rule on your mom. Look at your side of the call instead. Notice what your body does when her name appears, and what you say yes to next.
Why am I so drained after seeing my family?
Family visits ask for a lot of small giving at once. You watch moods, you keep the peace, you leave your own news unsaid. Each one costs a little.
Is feeling drained the same as being tired?
Not quite. Ordinary tiredness lifts with rest. This kind comes back with the same person, and it is often there before you even see them.
What if I feel drained all the time, with everyone?
Then this page is not the place to start. A tiredness with no person attached is worth taking to a doctor.
Is it wrong to feel drained by someone I love?
No. Love and tiredness can sit together. Feeling drained by someone says nothing about whether you love them.
How do I stop feeling drained by a friend?
Start with one call. Name a time at the start, keep to it, and say one thing about your own week. Count it as one rep.
Do I have to cut them off?
This page does not decide that for you. The work here is smaller. It is the few seconds before your yes, one moment at a time.
Why do I keep going back?
Because the yes fires before the thought does. A drop in the stomach arrives, and you are already on your way. The reasons come after.
What can I do the next time?
Choose the time you will leave before you arrive. Say it out loud at the start. Leave at that time.
