Body signature

REFERENCE: ONE TERM
The mapped or recorded pattern of signals across time, written into the file.
Your body signature is a written record. It lists the signals one pattern sends you, in the order they tend to come, gathered over many times the pattern has run.
It is built slowly, one note at a time. A single moment gives you one signal. A few weeks of notes give you the signature: which signals you get, which one comes first, and where they show up.
What it looks like
On Monday, someone praises your work and your face goes hot. You write it down. On Thursday, a friend says something kind and your shoulders pull in, then the heat comes. You write that down too.
By the end of the second week the page has a shape. The shoulders often come before the heat. The heat is worse with a manager than with a friend. There is a short laugh that arrives every time, just before you wave the praise away.
That page is your body signature for that one pattern. Nobody handed it to you. You wrote it from your own moments.
Body signal and body signature are two things
The body signal is one event, felt in the moment: a tight chest, a closing throat, a drop in the stomach, heat in the face. It is what you catch, live, before the behavior.
The body signature is the record of all those signals across time. It is not something you feel. It is something you write, read and correct. You use it on a calm day to know what to watch for next time.
[PATTERN SNAPSHOT]
Signal: one event, now, in the body.
Signature: the list of events, over weeks, on paper.
The two words are never swapped in this archive. You do not feel a signature, and you do not write down a signal and call it a map.
Body Signature Map
The Body Signature Map is the name for that record when it is laid out as one page. It keeps its name because it is the thing people actually fill in.
A map usually has a few rows. The body: which sensations come, in what order, with the first one marked. Attention: where your eyes and focus go. The thought that shows up. The urge, meaning the move you want to make. And the rooms where it happens most.
It is kept and corrected over time. Your signals may differ from anyone else's, and their order can change. A written map helps you prepare. It does not guarantee you will catch every time.
What to do when you notice it
In the moment, you are not looking at the map. You are feeling for the body signal, the tight chest or the heat or the drop. When it comes, name what is starting.
Say one short sentence out loud. It names the signal and declines the old move. Then take the different action you picked in advance. Count it as one rep, one repetition of the practice.
[FIELD ASSIGNMENT]
Tonight, write one line for the last time this pattern ran.
What did you feel first? Where in the body? Who was there?
Add a line each time it runs. Mark the first signal.
Later, add the moment to your map. One line is enough. Over a few weeks the earliest signal usually becomes clear, and that is the one to aim for next time.
What a body signature is not
It is not a diagnosis. It does not say anything about your health or what is wrong with you. It is a list of what you noticed, written by you.
It is not fixed. Some people find an earlier signal after a few weeks of watching. When that happens, the map changes and the earlier signal becomes the one to watch. Your own record overrules any general description of a pattern.
The term in use
- After two weeks of notes, you see the shoulders tense before the heat comes.
- Your map shows the chest band shows up with family, not at work.
- You catch a tight throat today. Tonight you add it to your map.

Questions people ask about this term
What is a body signature?
It is the mapped or recorded set of signals one pattern sends you, gathered over time. You write it down from your own moments. It is a record, not a feeling.
What is the difference between a body signal and a body signature?
The body signal is one event you feel now, like a tight chest. The body signature is the record of all those signals across weeks. You feel one and you write the other.
What is the Body Signature Map?
It is the body signature laid out as one page. It has rows for the body, attention, the thought, the urge and the rooms. You keep it and correct it over time.
How long does it take to build one?
There is no set length. A few times the pattern runs usually starts to show a shape. A pattern that runs rarely takes longer in calendar time.
Do I need a body signature before I can start?
No. You can catch one body signal today without any map. The map helps you aim earlier. It is not a gate you must pass first.
What if I do not feel anything in my body?
Some people notice an urge or a thought first, not a sensation. Write down whatever comes first. That still belongs on the map.
Can my body signature change?
Yes. The order can shift and an earlier signal can show up after a few weeks. When that happens, update the map. Your record is what counts.
Is a body signature the same for everyone with the same pattern?
No. Each pattern has signals people often report, but yours may differ. Two people with the same behavior can have different maps.
Is a body signature a medical thing?
No. It is not a diagnosis and it says nothing about your health. It is a plain list of what you noticed before a pattern ran.
Where do I write it?
Anywhere you will actually look. Paper, a note on your phone, the back of a receipt. One line per time the pattern runs is enough.
Why mark the first signal?
Because the earliest signal gives you the most time. A loud signal is easy to notice and often comes too late. The first one hands you the whole gap before you act.
