Interoception
This term is defined just below. Read the definition first, then open a page where the term is used, listed at the end.
REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Interoception is your sense of what is happening inside your body, such as your heartbeat, your breathing or a knot in your stomach.
Your body reports to you all day. Your heart speeds up. Your stomach tightens. Your breath goes short. Most of it passes without a thought.
Interoception is the research word for sensing those inside signals. It is a real sense, like sight or hearing, pointed inward. This page says what research has found about it, and where it differs from the feeling this method asks you to notice.
What it looks like
You walk into a room and something drops in your stomach before you know why. A name lights up on your phone and your chest goes tight. Someone says well done and heat climbs your neck.
Some people feel these changes clearly. Others only notice them when they are strong. Many feel them and do not trust what they feel.
Your body knew something before you had words for it.
Where the word comes from
The term comes from the study of how the body senses itself. Several papers read in this site's Research Library look at it.
One study of 80 people split it into three parts. How well you pass a test of feeling your own heartbeat. How good you believe you are at it. And whether your confidence matches how well you actually do. All three turned out to be separate.
Another paper found that sensing the body well cut both ways. It helped gut choices when the body leaned toward the better option. It hurt them when the body leaned the other way.
A third set of experiments asked 701 people to color where they felt each emotion. Different emotions gave different body maps. The maps showed what people reported feeling, not readings taken from the body.
Sensing your body
Sensing your body is the plain-words version of the term. It means noticing what is going on under the skin while it is going on.
The research adds a useful warning. Feeling sure about a body sense is not the same as being right about it. And a strong gut feeling can point the wrong way.
[MECHANISM]
A body sense is information, not an order.
Noticing it gives you a moment to ask what is doing the talking.
Where the word stops
Interoception is a measured skill in research. Studies test it in a lab, often by asking people to count their heartbeats. This method does not measure anything in your body.
The body signal is a different thing. It is the physical feeling a person reports as a pattern starts, such as a tight chest, a closing throat or heat in the face. Nobody has tested it as interoception. It is what you notice and write down, not a lab score.
Interoception is also not a diagnosis. And this page is not medical advice. A body feeling that worries you is for a doctor, not for a pattern page.
What to do when you notice it
When a physical feeling rises, such as a tight chest or a sinking stomach, stop for a second and notice it. Then name what is starting. Something like: this is the pull to back out.
Say one short sentence out loud, even quietly. It gives the feeling a name before it gives you an order.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
My chest just went tight. This is the old pull. I can notice it and not follow it.
Then take a different action instead of the usual response. Stay in the room. Send the one-line reply. Say thank you and stop. Count it as one rep, one repetition of the new move.
Afterward, write down where you felt it and what happened next. Over weeks, the notes show you when your body was pointing at a pattern and when it was pointing at something real.
The term in use
- Your stomach drops as you walk into the room, before you know why.
- Your chest goes tight when a name lights up on your phone.
- You notice the heat in your neck, name it, and stay in the room.
Often mixed up with
BODY SIGNAL
Interoception is a sense that research measures in a lab. The body signal is the feeling you notice as a pattern starts. It is not a measured score.
GUT FEELING
A gut feeling is a hunch about what to do. Interoception is the sense that picks up the body change, and it can point either way.
BODY AWARENESS
People use body awareness loosely. In one study read here, awareness meant something narrower. It meant your confidence matched how accurate you were.
Questions people ask about this term
What does interoception mean?
It is your sense of what is happening inside your body. Your heartbeat, your breathing, a knot in your stomach. It is a real sense, pointed inward.
How is interoception measured?
Studies often ask people to count or track their own heartbeat. Questionnaires also ask how well people think they sense their body. Those two measures do not always agree.
Is the body signal the same as interoception?
No. Interoception is a sense research measures. The body signal is the feeling you notice as a pattern starts. Nobody has tested it as interoception.
Can I trust what my body is telling me?
Treat it as information, not an order. One study found that feeling sure about a body sense only partly matched being right. Writing it down helps you learn when it is right.
Is a strong gut feeling always right?
No. One paper found sensing the body well helped some gut choices and hurt others. It depended on which way the body was leaning.
Where do people feel emotions in the body?
In one set of experiments, people colored body maps for each emotion. Different emotions gave different maps. The maps were what people reported, not body readings.
Can you get better at sensing your body?
The studies read here measured the skill. They did not test whether it can be trained. So this page does not claim it can.
Is low interoception a diagnosis?
No. Interoception is a skill researchers measure, not a diagnosis. If a body feeling worries you, talk to a doctor.
Why do I feel something in my body before I know what it is?
Body changes often arrive first. The words come after. That gap is the moment to notice what is starting.
What do I do when I notice a strong feeling in my body?
Stop for a second and name what is starting. Say one short sentence out loud. Then take one small different action instead of the usual response.
Should I keep a record of what I feel?
It helps. Write where you felt it and what happened next. Over weeks, the record shows when the feeling pointed at a pattern.
