WHEN IT RUNS FOR YEARS / THE STACKS
When a friendship drains you for years
Read what people report first. Then read the way back at the end, and take one small step.
People describe ending a draining friendship in their head for years while it goes on unchanged.
Some friendships run on one side only. You listen, they talk. You show up, they call when they need something. Over years, it becomes normal, and it becomes heavy.
If carrying someone else has left you unable to carry yourself tonight, talk to someone now.

They are there for you, not for the person you are looking after.
This page is built from a record of the words people use about their own repeating behavior. Every quoted line below is in that record, word for word. It describes what people report. It does not predict what will happen to you.
What it feels like inside
The Draining Bond is the pattern of staying where you are worn down. In friendship, it often wears the name of kindness.
A public question gives the role its name: “why am I the therapist friend”. Another asks “why do I feel like having friends is exhausting”.
The carrying spreads. One question asks “why do I keep carrying everyone”. A public forum title reads “I feel like my friendships are all one sided”.
The effort only runs one way. One line reads “I am the only one who ever suggests anything”. The feelings do not line up. One line reads “I resent them and I would do it all again tomorrow”.
The years inside one friendship
The clearest length of time in this part of the record is four years. One line reads “I have been ending this friendship in my head for four years”.
Four years of ending, and no ending. Nothing in the friendship changed in that time. Only the weight of it did. The decision gets made again and again, and not carried out.
The calls are long and one-sided. One line reads “three hours on the phone and she never asked how I was”. Some people start keeping count. One line from the record does exactly that:
“I worked out how long it has been since she asked me a question”
That line holds the whole cost in one sentence. Not a fight. Not a betrayal. Just a long time without being asked. Nobody decided it should be this way. It became this way, one call at a time, over years.
What it takes from you
Over years, the giving leaves little behind. One line reads “I am the most supportive person I know and I am running on nothing”.
The giving is real, and so is the cost. Being the strong one for years leaves no room to be anything else. The loneliest line is short. It reads “I am everybody's safe person and I have nobody”.
The drain shows in the body. The record holds “flat and hollow for a day after we meet”. It also holds “a held breath through the whole phone call”. Wanting something back feels wrong. One question asks “why do I feel selfish for wanting my own life”.
And parts of yourself go missing. The record holds the search for them: “how to remember what I used to like”.
Why it is so hard to step back
Stepping back can feel like a harm you are doing to the other person. The forum titles show this plainly. They ask for a verdict before any exit.
One reads “AITA for quietly distancing myself from a close friend?”. The word quietly matters. Even the step back has to make no noise. The friendship keeps its shape because you keep holding it up, year after year.
The wish to leave and the habit of staying live together. One line reads “I want out and I would still answer at three in the morning”. Another reads “I love her and I hope she cancels”.
Another shows the exit folding: “I cancelled and felt sick and un-cancelled within the hour”.
So the friendship goes on, unchanged, while the ending happens only in your head. The record does not show how these friendships ended. It shows how long they ran.
The way back
Years of carrying do not make it permanent. It is not too late to catch the moment you pick it up again.
Behavioral Interception is the practice of catching an automatic pattern as it begins, intercepting its usual response, and practicing a different action until it becomes more natural.
It starts with the body signal. The body signal is the first thing you feel, like heavy shoulders when their name lights up.
The first move is Catch. Feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Here, that can be as short as: this is the carrying.
The second move is Intercept. Interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. You let the call wait an hour. You ask for something back.
The third move is Rewrite. Repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
The gap between the signal and the carrying is called the window. Its length is a working figure you train toward, not a measured fact.
Insight does not change the sequence. Repeating the different action does. Pattern Archaeology is optional work between moments. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
You can still be a good friend and a tired one. It is not too late to be asked a question, too.
FROM THE RECORD
A typed title is a real public title, recorded as written. A corpus phrasing was built from confirmed public titles by the report's method, so it is not one person's words. Neither is a count of searches.
