    REFERENCE: ONE TERM

Codependency is a popular word for a relationship where your own needs keep shrinking around someone else's.

Their bad day became your whole day. You did not decide that. It happened the way it always does. Codependency is the popular word for that shape: one person's needs become the weather, and the other person's become optional.

In this archive it usually points at The Draining Bond, the pull to keep giving to someone who wears you down. You feel it as a weight across the shoulders when your own cost comes into view. This page stays on your side of the bond. It is about what you do, not about what the other person is.

    What it looks like

Their mood is low, so you cancel your plans without being asked. You tell yourself you did not really want to go. By evening you cannot remember what the plans were.

You know their schedule, their worries and their next appointment better than your own. When someone asks what you want for dinner, your mind goes blank.

A friend asks how you are. You answer with how they are doing. You do not notice the swap until later, if at all.

Somewhere along the way, your own needs stopped getting a turn.

    Codependent

Codependent is the same word turned into a label for a person. People say it about themselves half as a joke and half as a verdict.

The label describes a position, and often describes it well. It also gives you nothing to do this evening. And it runs in a circle: you stay because you are codependent, and you are codependent because you stay. There is no way out of a circle like that.

    Unmitigated communion

Unmitigated communion is a research term for a focus on others that leaves the self out. A theory paper, summed up in this archive's research library, separates it from caring on its own.

In that paper, caring for others was not linked to more distress. Caring that left the self out was. That is a useful split. Caring is not the problem. Leaving yourself out of the count is.

    Where the word comes from

Codependency is a popular word, not a clinical one. It never became a clinical category. It came into everyday speech through popular books and talk about relationships.

Today it covers a wide range. Staying too long, helping too much, losing track of what you want. That range is part of why so many people recognize themselves in it.

    Where the word stops

It is not a diagnosis. It does not tell you whether to stay or go, and this page will not either. What you do with any of this stays yours.

It also cannot see the moment. It names a role, and a role has no start time. What can be caught is smaller. First the weight across the shoulders. Then the reasoning that always lands on the same answer: they need me, nobody else understands them, now is a bad time.

    [FIELD OBSERVATION]

A good month ends in staying. A terrible month ends in staying, with an explanation attached. When the answer never changes, something decided before you did.

What to do when you notice it

Feel for the weight across your shoulders. It tends to land when your own cost comes into view. Name it to yourself: there is the weight.

Then say one short sentence out loud, even quietly.

    [INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]

There is the weight. I am not solving this right now.

Shoulders heavy. Their feelings are information, not my task.

    One thing for me today.

Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Before you say yes, name one thing you need today. Or ask one question first: do you want help, or do you want me to listen? Then wait for the answer.

Count it as one rep, one time your own need got a turn. If you only notice afterward, name it out loud then. That counts too.

    The term in use

    • Their mood drops, and you cancel your evening before they ask.
    • Someone asks what you want for dinner, and your mind goes blank.
    • You answer a question about your week by describing theirs.

    Often mixed up with

    LOVE

Love and this can sit together. The difference is whether your own needs still get a turn.

    BEING SUPPORTIVE

Support reads the situation and can say no. Codependency gives the same amount whatever the situation is.

    CLOSENESS

Closeness includes both people. Codependency keeps one person's needs at the center and the other's out of view.

Questions people ask about this term

    What does codependency mean?

It is a popular word for a relationship where your needs keep shrinking around someone else's. Their needs set the weather. Yours become optional.

    Is codependency a diagnosis?

No. It is a widely used descriptive word, and it never became a clinical category. This archive does not diagnose anyone either.

What does it mean to be codependent?

It usually means your own state is organized around another person's. You track their needs closely and lose track of yours.

Am I codependent or just in love?

Both can be true at once. The useful question is whether staying is a choice you make, or an answer you keep arriving at no matter what happens.

    What is unmitigated communion?

It is a research term for a focus on others that leaves the self out. A theory paper links it, not caring itself, to more distress.

Is codependency the same as caring too much?

Not quite. Caring is not the problem. The problem is caring that leaves you out of the count.

Does this mean I should leave?

Nothing on this page tells anyone to end anything. It offers the difference between a decision and a habit. What you do with that is yours.

Why do I always put their needs first?

Often because reading someone else's state early was once important. The habit runs before you decide, starting with a weight across the shoulders.

Why do I feel guilty when I do something for myself?

The guilt tends to arrive on schedule, not in proportion. It fires because your own cost came into view, not because you did something wrong.

How do I stop being codependent?

Start smaller than the label. Feel the weight, say one short sentence out loud, and name one thing you need today. Count each time.

    Which pattern is codependency?

Most often the pull to keep giving to someone who wears you down. The assessment names which of the nine runs most for you.
