Caring for others while leaving yourself out went with more distress
Read what the paper separates. Then notice who is missing from your own plans this week.
A focus on others that leaves the self out was linked to more distress. Caring for others on its own was not.
THE SOURCE
Helgeson and Fritz (1998). A Theory of Unmitigated Communion. Personality and Social Psychology Review.

HOW STRONG THE EVIDENCE IS
EARLY. A theory paper. It builds one argument from earlier research and does not report a new study.
Putting others first is often called kind. This paper asked when it stops being good for the one doing it.
The Research Library reads one paper at a time and says what it found in plain words. For this note we read the abstract, not the full paper.
What the research found
The authors separate two traits that are easy to mix up.
The first they call communion. It is an older measure of traits long seen as female.
The second they call unmitigated communion. That means a focus on others that leaves the self out.
Unmitigated communion was linked to more distress. Communion on its own was not.
The authors argue it helps explain why women and men differ in distress.
The paper also describes the thinking and behavior that go with it. The abstract does not list them.
How strong the evidence is
This is a theory paper. It gathers earlier research into one argument and does not report a new study.
The abstract gives no number of people. The authors also offer guesses about where the trait comes from, and call them guesses.
What it means for catching a pattern
The Draining Bond is the pull to stay close to someone who wears you down. Your attention goes to them, with none left for you.
This paper does not study that pattern. But it draws a line worth knowing: caring is one thing, and leaving yourself out is another.
Catch comes first. Catch means you feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.
The body signal is what you feel in your body as the pattern starts. It might be a heavy chest when their name shows up.
Then Intercept, the second move: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Before you say yes, name one thing you need today.
What it does not show
This paper did not test The Archivist Method. It is a theory drawn from earlier studies.
It does not say caring for others is wrong. It separates caring from caring that leaves you out.
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
