BEHAVIORAL INTERCEPTION, IN DEPTH / THE STACKS
The Draining Bond, worked through one situation
You can read the situation first, then follow it through three moves.
In The Draining Bond, the reason to stay sounds like decency, every single month.
It is midnight, and the phone rings. You know who it is before you look. This page walks that moment through, one step at a time.
The Draining Bond is when you stay in something that costs more than it gives back. This is a worked example of Behavioral Interception, the practice of catching a pattern as it starts. The Archivist Method keeps a record of the words people use about their own repeating behavior. This example is built from that record.
The situation
One recorded line reads “I answer the phone at midnight every time”. Another reads “I checked their mood before I checked my own”.
The call is not an emergency. It is the same call as last night, and the night before. You answer, you listen for an hour, and the next day runs on empty.
A real emergency is different, and this page is not about one. It is about the ordinary call that comes every night.
Catch: the weight
Catch is the first move. The canon says it plainly: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.
A body signal is the first thing you feel in your body when a pattern starts. In this pattern, the usual first sign is a weight across the shoulders. It lands before the reasons start.
The record holds this line: “weight across my shoulders when their name comes up”.
So the catch is small. The name lights up the screen and the shoulders drop. You notice the weight. You name it: this is the pattern that keeps me here.
Intercept: one small line for tonight
Intercept is the second move. Its canon reads: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes.
Here the usual response is to pick up and stay on for an hour. The different action is one small line, held for tonight only.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
Say it quietly, out loud: There is the weight. The math is starting. I am not solving it right now.
Then send one line instead of answering: I am going to sleep. I can talk tomorrow at noon.
That spoken line is a circuit break, a short sentence said out loud that stops the sequence. It does not end anything. It moves one call to a time you chose.
The cover story
The cover story is the reason that shows up to keep you in place. It sounds like decency. They need me. It would be cruel not to answer.
You do not have to argue with it. Answer it with a plain fact: their feelings are information, not a task assigned to me. Then send the line.
Rewrite: the next late call
Rewrite is the third move. Its canon reads: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns.
When the call comes again, send the line again. Each time you send it and keep the noon time, that is one rep. A rep is one round of catching, interrupting and taking the different action.
The record asks for this in five words: “how to stop answering at midnight”. One small line, repeated, is the how.
If you catch it late
Say you notice forty minutes into the call. That still counts. A late catch is still a rep.
End the call there, kindly. I need to sleep now. Let us talk at noon.
Between moments, if you want it
Pattern Archaeology is optional work you can do on a calm day. Its canon reads: between moments, investigate where the pattern was learned, what it once accomplished, and what still keeps it running.
You never do it with the phone ringing. Nothing waits on it. SOURCE UNKNOWN is a complete answer.
What to try this week
Write the one line now and save it on your phone. Pick the time you would rather talk.
When the weight lands, say the short line and send the message. Count each one as a rep.
FROM THE RECORD
A typed title is a real public title, recorded as written. A corpus phrasing was built from confirmed public titles by the report's method, so it is not one person's words. Neither is a count of searches.
- “I answer the phone at midnight every time” (corpus phrasing)
- “I checked their mood before I checked my own” (corpus phrasing)
- “weight across my shoulders when their name comes up” (corpus phrasing)
- “how to stop answering at midnight” (corpus phrasing)
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
