Habits start from the setting, not from the goal
Read what the paper says about how habits start. Then look at where your own pattern starts.
Once a habit forms, the setting alone can start the old response, with no goal in between.

HOW STRONG THE EVIDENCE IS
MODERATE. A theory paper that pulls earlier work into one model. It reports no new experiment of its own.
Your goals and your habits are different. This paper explains how they meet, and where they pull apart.
The Research Library reads one paper at a time and says what it found in plain words. For this note we read the abstract, not the full paper.
What the research found
The paper says a habit forms slowly. A response gets linked to what is around it each time. That can be a place, or the action that came just before.
Once the habit forms, seeing that setting can start the response. No goal has to step in first.
The links build slowly. They do not shift much when your goals change. Acting against the habit once in a while does not undo them either.
Goals still matter. They can drive the repeats that build a habit. They can also put you near the things that set a habit off.
How strong the evidence is
This is a model, not a new study. It gathers what earlier research found and offers one way to explain it.
A good model is useful, but it can still be wrong in places. Read it as a map of the ground, not a measurement of you.
What it means for catching a pattern
The Disappearing Pattern is the pull to leave when someone gets close. You may decide to stay, and still go quiet the next time a message lands.
The model offers one reason why. The goal changed, but the link between the setting and the response did not.
So the work happens at the moment itself. Catch is defined this way: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior.
Start by noticing the setting. Where are you, and what just happened, when the pull begins?
What it does not show
This paper did not test The Archivist Method. It is a general model of habits, not a study of any one pattern.
It also does not say a pattern is only a habit. Some patterns carry more than that, and this paper does not reach them.
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
