A new setting can loosen an old habit

Read what happened to students' habits after a move. Then look at what around you has changed lately.

After students moved schools, old habits held only where parts of the old setting came along.

    THE SOURCE

Wood, Tam and Witt (2005). Changing circumstances, disrupting habits.. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

    HOW STRONG THE EVIDENCE IS

EARLY. One study of students moving to a new university. The abstract does not say how many took part.

“When usual contexts for performance change, habits cannot be cued by recurring stimuli, and performance should be disrupted.”

A move changes more than your address. This study looked at what it does to your habits.

The Research Library reads one paper at a time and says what it found in plain words. For this note we read the abstract, not the full paper.

    What the research found

The study followed students who moved to a new university. It looked at their habits of exercise, reading the paper and watching TV.

Those habits carried over only when parts of the setting stayed the same. One example: students who kept reading the paper with others.

Sometimes the break in a habit let people act on what they now meant to do. A change in plans alone could not explain the break.

    How strong the evidence is

This is one study of one kind of change, a move between schools. The abstract does not give the number of students.

It fits with other habit research. On its own, it is an early finding, not a settled rule.

What it means for catching a pattern

Success Sabotage is the pattern of undoing things just as they start to work. A new job is a common place for it to show up.

This study suggests a new setting can loosen old habits for a while. Some of the old cues, the things that used to start it, are gone.

That can make a new job a useful time to choose the different action on purpose. Watch for the parts of the old setting that came with you.

Those are where the old response can still start. Catch it there. The canon puts it this way: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The body signal is what you feel in your body as the pattern starts.

    What it does not show

This study did not test The Archivist Method. It studied everyday habits like exercise, not patterns about success.

It does not say you must move to change. Most people cannot, and most patterns travel with the person.

The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
