Habits run while your mind is somewhere else
Read what people reported hour by hour. Then notice where your mind is when your pattern runs.
During habits, people's thoughts were often about something else, because the action did not need them.

HOW STRONG THE EVIDENCE IS
MODERATE. Two diary studies with reports every hour. They describe what people noticed, not what caused it.
“they were likely to think about issues unrelated to their behavior”
You can act without thinking about it. This paper checked how often that happens in a normal day.
The Research Library reads one paper at a time and says what it found in plain words. For this note we read the abstract, not the full paper.
What the research found
People in two diary studies wrote down what they were doing and thinking, every hour.
A habit here meant something done almost daily in the same kind of setting. During habits, people tended to think about other things.
During less usual actions, their thoughts matched what they were doing. The paper reads this as thought being needed to guide those actions.
Habits also came with less stress than less usual actions. That is part of why habits are useful.
How strong the evidence is
Diary studies catch real days, which is a strength. They rely on what people noticed and wrote down, which is a limit.
The abstract does not give the number of people. It reports two studies that point the same way.
What it means for catching a pattern
The Apology Loop is the habit of saying sorry before you have thought about it. You may find the word already typed before you meant it.
This study fits that report. When an action runs on habit, your thoughts are often somewhere else.
So waiting to think your way out rarely works in the moment. The body is often faster than the thought.
That is why the first move starts in the body. Catch means you feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. The body signal is what you feel in your body as the pattern starts.
What it does not show
This study did not test The Archivist Method. It studied everyday habits, not repeating patterns with other people.
It does not say every habit is harmless, or that every pattern is only a habit.
The free Crash Course, short lessons on your pattern, starts by naming it.
