REFERENCE: ONE TERM
Enabling is a borrowed word for help that seems to keep someone's problem going, by covering for them or cushioning the cost.
You paid their bill again this month. You told yourself it was the last time. Enabling is the borrowed word for help like that: help that seems to keep someone's problem going, by covering for them or cushioning the cost.
In this archive it usually points at The Draining Bond, the pull to keep giving to someone who wears you down. You feel it as a weight across the shoulders when their next problem comes into view. This page stays on your side. It is about the moment you step in, not about what is wrong with them.
What it looks like
Someone you love is short on rent again. You said no last time, and meant it. Then they called, and the money was in their account before the call ended.
A family event comes around and they do not show. You make the excuse for them before anyone asks. You have made it so often it sounds true.
At work, a colleague keeps missing deadlines. You finish their part late at night so nobody notices. Nobody does. That was the point.
You keep promising yourself it is the last time. It keeps not being the last time.
Where the word comes from
Enabling is a borrowed word, not a clinical one. It came into everyday speech from self-help writing about families and the people in them who keep covering for someone.
Today it is used for almost any help that seems to keep a problem going. Lending money, making excuses, smoothing things over, finishing someone's work. The range is wide, and the word gets used loosely.
Where the word stops
It is not a diagnosis. It is also aimed at the wrong place. It is aimed at your character, as if you were the cause of someone else's problem. You are not. Their choices are theirs.
And the word arrives too late to use. It names the help after it has happened. It says nothing about the moment before you stepped in, which is the only moment you can work with.
What happens before you step in
A weight lands across the shoulders as their next problem comes into view. A few seconds later the reasons start. If I do not, they will lose the apartment. It is just this once. Saying no now would be cruel.
Each reason may hold something true. That is what makes them work. But watch where they land. A good month ends in helping. A bad month ends in helping, with a longer explanation. When the answer never changes, something decided before you did.
[FIELD OBSERVATION]
The help itself may be kind. The question is not whether to help. It is whether you chose it, or whether it was chosen before you got there.
What to do when you notice it
Feel for the weight across your shoulders as the request arrives. Name it to yourself: there is the weight, and the reasons are about to start.
Next, say one short sentence out loud, under your breath if people are near.
[INTERRUPTION SCRIPT]
There is the weight. I can wait one day.
Shoulders heavy. This one is theirs to solve.
The reasons are starting. I am not answering yet.
Then take the different action instead of the usual response. Wait one day before you answer. Offer something smaller than you usually would. Or say not this time, once, plainly, with no long reason attached.
Count it as one rep, one time you paused before stepping in. If you only notice after the money moved, name it out loud then. That counts too. If anyone is in danger, that is not a moment for practice. Get help first.

Questions people ask about this term
What does enabling mean?
It is a borrowed word for help that seems to keep someone's problem going. Usually that means covering for them or cushioning the cost of what they do.
Is enabling a diagnosis?
No. It is an everyday word, not a clinical term or a diagnosis. This archive does not diagnose anyone.
Am I enabling someone?
Watch where your reasons land. If the answer is always yes, whatever the month held, the help may be running on its own rather than chosen.
Is enabling my fault?
No. The word can sound like a charge against your character. Someone else's choices are theirs, not yours.
What is the difference between helping and enabling?
Helping is chosen and can change with the situation. What people call enabling tends to give the same yes every time, before the situation is weighed.
Why do I keep lending money I never get back?
The weight lands first, then the reasons, then the yes. Waiting one day before you answer gives the decision back to you.
Why do I keep making excuses for them?
The excuse often comes out before anyone asks. It eases a weight for a moment, and that relief brings the excuse back next time.
How do I stop enabling?
Start smaller than stopping. Feel the weight, say one short sentence out loud, and wait one day before you answer. Count each time.
Will they be angry if I stop?
They might be. Their reaction is theirs. If anyone's anger makes you afraid for your safety, talk to a person today.
Where does the urge to step in come from?
Often from a time when keeping someone else's trouble contained mattered a great deal. Looking into that is optional, between moments.
