Why does my adult child only call when they need money?

If a request for money ever comes with a threat or leaves you afraid, read the box below first.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

The phone rings, and you already know. A bill. A car. A month that came up short. The call ends when the money is sorted.

This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your child is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.

    What you are actually seeing

If a request for money comes with a threat, or you give because you are afraid, that comes first.

    In the United States:

    Emergency services: 911.

Adult Protective Services, reachable through Eldercare Locator, for financial pressure on an older or vulnerable adult or for somebody being hurt in either direction. Ringing for advice is not an allegation.

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

Money taken under pressure is not a family matter to keep quiet. You can ring for advice without making an accusation.

The calls cluster around need. Weeks of quiet, then a warm call, then the ask. After the money goes, the quiet comes back.

Saying yes has become the price of hearing their voice. Saying no feels like hanging up on them for good.

And you notice you now brace when their name comes up. That is the saddest part for most parents. The phone used to be good news.

Why the call and the money became one thing

Each time the ask worked, the two got tied a little tighter. Nobody planned it. It is what happens when a request and a reply repeat for years.

What your child needs, and why, is not something this page can see. Some needs are real and sudden. Some are a habit on both sides.

What the page can see is your half. When the only thread feels like money, every refusal feels like cutting it. So the yes comes before the thinking.

What this feels like in the body

Many parents describe the same thing. A sinking stomach when the name lights up. Then a rush of relief once the money is sent.

    [MECHANISM]

That sinking is the body signal, the first physical sign. It comes three to seven seconds before you act.

What follows is often a yes, said on the phone, before the call is five minutes old.

The relief afterward is the reward. It is why the yes comes faster next time.

    What this is not about

Helping your grown child is not wrong. Many families move money between them for good reasons, and nothing here argues with that.

Saying no is not wrong either. A no to money is not a no to the person. It only feels that way because the two have been tied together.

And more money does not buy more calls. Most parents here have tested that already. It buys the next ask.

What is actually in your control

Your child is an adult. You cannot decide how they spend or when they call. You decide what leaves your account, and how the decision is made.

You can take the call and decide the money later. "I want to hear how you are. I don't decide money on the phone. I'll tell you tomorrow."

You can decide a yearly amount before anyone asks. When it is gone, it is gone. The answer is then a fact, not a fight.

You can offer help that is not cash. A ride. A meal. Paying one bill directly, if you choose to.

And you can keep the calls free in both directions. Call them for no reason. Take their call even after a no. That is how the thread becomes more than money.

If this is you rather than them

There is a file in this archive about the person who cannot stop giving to a relationship that drains them. It is written about the reader, not the child.

Do you say yes before the other person has finished asking? Then that file may be yours.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Draining Bond. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why does my adult child only call when they need money?

Over years, the call and the money can become tied together. Each yes ties them a little tighter. What your child needs, and why, is not something this page can see.

Is it wrong to give my grown child money?

No. Many families help each other for good reasons. The question is only whether the yes is a choice, or a reflex that fires before you have thought.

If I say no, will I lose my child?

A no to money is not a no to the person. Keep calling them for no reason, and take their calls after a no. That is how the thread becomes more than money.

How do I say no to my adult child asking for money?

Take the money question off the phone. "I don't decide money on the phone. I'll tell you tomorrow." Then decide alone, and give a short answer with no long list of reasons.

Should I set a limit on what I give my adult children?

A yearly amount decided in advance helps many parents. When it is gone, the answer is a fact rather than a fight.

What is the body signal when they call?

Often a sinking stomach when the name lights up. It comes three to seven seconds before you act. That gap is where you can say "I'll tell you tomorrow" instead of yes.

Why do I feel relieved after I send the money?

Because the relief is the reward. It ends the discomfort of the ask, fast. That relief is why the yes arrives quicker each time.

What can I offer instead of cash?

A ride, a meal, time, or paying one bill directly if you choose to. Help that is not cash keeps you in the relationship without the account deciding it.

What if my child threatens me when I say no?

Then it is not only a family question, and this page is not the help. In an emergency, call 911. The routes at the top of this page take calls about money taken under pressure.

Can I make my adult child call without needing something?

Not directly. You can make the calls you control free of money, and you can make each ask slower to answer. The rest belongs to your child.

    THE ARCHIVES

You cannot open your child's file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern running in you, at no cost.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
