What do I do when someone won't talk to me?
Send one plain message, or none. Then read what is in your control before you send another.
WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT
Somebody who used to answer has stopped. Not after a fight you can point to. Just a thinning, and then a quiet, and now you are the only one in the thread.
This page will not tell you what they are. Nobody here has met them. It will tell you how to read a silence without writing a verdict, and what your own side of it is. Send one plain message or none, and read the rest before you send another.
What you are actually seeing
Look at the shape before the reason. Three different things look like being frozen out, and from your side they match.
The first is a life that got full. The replies slow, then stop, and there is nothing aimed at you in it. The second is a reason they have not said. Something happened, or something was said, and the silence is the shape their hurt took.
The third has timing. The quiet arrives after a good stretch, after a night when the two of you got somewhere real. That one is not an answer to a mistake. It is an answer to being close.
Why would someone stop talking without saying why?
This page cannot say what is inside them. It can say what the third shape looks like from outside. It looks like a body making distance before a choice is made.
For some people, closeness reads as exposure. The more there is to lose, the stronger the pull to leave before it can be lost. And the sentence that would explain the silence gets heavier every day it waits. By the second week it costs more than the silence does.
That is a mechanism, not a character. It says nothing about whether they liked you. Often it says they did.
You keep asking what you did. The quiet keeps answering a question you did not ask.
What this is not about
It is not about the last thing you said. You have reread it. It was fine, or it was small, and the silence is far bigger than it.
It is not a test you can pass with the right message. There is no sentence that opens a door somebody closed from the inside.
And it is not yours to end. The pull away starts a few seconds before they choose it, in a body you are not in. No message reaches those seconds.
What happens in your body
Watch what happens in you when you think of them. A drop in the stomach. A pull to open the thread and check whether the last message was read. A flush of heat at being the one who always goes first.
[MECHANISM]
That drop is the body signal, the first thing you feel as your own pattern starts. It arrives a few seconds before you act.
What follows is your usual response. The second message. The question sent through a friend. The long explanation of how it felt. Going quiet back.
Each of those is a move in a sequence you can watch. Theirs runs in their body. This one runs in yours.
What is in your control
Send one plain message, or none. One is a door. It sounds like: I noticed we have gone quiet. If something happened, I would like to know. I am here either way. Then put the phone down.
Do not send the second one. A second message is not a door. It is pressure, and pressure feeds a pull away.
Do not reach them through other people, and do not turn up where they are. Those are not doors either.
Keep your own week. The reaching has a cost and you are the one paying it. Count what it costs you, honestly, and decide how long you will keep paying. That number is yours to set.
What it is costing you
Check what has changed in you. Whether you draft messages and delete them. Whether a slow reply from anybody now reads as the start of this. Whether you have gone quieter with the next person, so there is less to lose.
Each of those is a pattern with its own file. The late-night message in particular has a body signal you can catch: the drop in the stomach, a few seconds before you type.
That is the part with a door in it. The person who stops running their own pattern changes what the next thread is like.
What do I do when someone won't talk to me?
Send one plain message that leaves a door, and then stop. Do not send a second, and do not route a question through a friend. If there is a reason you can name, name it in that one message and say you are open to hearing their side. Then keep your own week. A silence is an answer even when it is a poor one, and the move that treats it as a puzzle is the move that costs you most.
What do I do when someone is ignoring me?
Treat them exactly as you did before, and treat yourself as the one person in this you can reach. There is no technique to apply to a person who is ignoring you, and this page will not hand you one. A plan to make them notice you is a test, and a test turns a quiet into a game. Say what you want once, plainly. Keep your warmth and your days. Count what the reaching costs. Set the number of weeks you will keep paying it.
What do I do if someone is avoiding me?
Avoiding is the same move with the person's whole body in it, and it tells you one useful thing: the silence is not accidental. So do not corner them. A person who leaves the room when you enter it is not going to answer you better in the hallway. Send one message, give it a real door, and leave the next move theirs. If their avoiding has ever come with threats or frightens you, talk to a person, not a page.
If this is you rather than them
Some people read this page for a person who went quiet and recognize the pull from the other side. The reply that got heavier every day. The relief of not sending it.
If that just happened, the first-person file is The Disappearing Pattern, the pull to make distance when someone gets close. It is written for you, about your own body, not anybody else's.
THE FIRST-PERSON FILE
The shape described on this page is filed as The Disappearing Pattern. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.
If this is you rather than them: Why do I push people away when they get close?Questions people ask about this
Why would someone suddenly stop talking to me?
This page cannot say what is inside them. What can be seen from outside is a shape: a life that got full, a reason not yet said, or a pull away that arrives after closeness. The sort at the top of the page tells them apart.
Should I ask them why they are not talking to me?
Once, plainly, in a message that leaves a door. If something happened, I would like to know. Then do not ask again. A second asking is pressure, and pressure feeds a pull away.
Did I do something wrong?
You have reread the last thing you said and not found it. If the silence is far bigger than anything in the thread, it is not an answer to the thread. It is answering something older, in a body you are not in.
How long should I wait for them to reply?
Long enough that you have stopped checking, which is the only wait that is yours to set. A couple of weeks with no answer to a plain message is an answer. Act on your own week, not their timeline.
Should I ignore them back?
No. Going quiet back turns a withdrawal into a standoff, and a standoff has no end rule. Leave one door and keep your own days instead.
Is it okay to message them through a mutual friend?
It is not a door. It puts a third person inside a silence that was between two, and it reads as pressure from the other side. One direct message, or none.
Why do I keep checking whether they read my message?
Because the check has a payout, even when it is bad news. The drop in your stomach a few seconds before you look is the body signal, the thing you feel as your own pattern starts. That is the place a different action gets chosen.
What if they come back months later as if nothing happened?
Decide nothing in the first hour. Say once that you noticed the silence and that you would like it named next time. Then watch what happens the next time the two of you get somewhere real.
Can someone who freezes people out change?
The mechanism is interruptible, and the interruption happens in one body, theirs. This page makes no forecast about anyone. What is in reach is your own response to the silence.
What is the body signal when someone stops talking to me?
Often a drop in the stomach when you think of them, or a pull to open the thread and check. It comes a few seconds before you act. That is where a different action can be chosen.
THE ARCHIVES
You cannot open their file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern that has been running in you since the thread went quiet, and it costs nothing.
