Why is my partner's mental health draining me?

If your partner talks about not wanting to be alive, read the box below first.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

They have been low for months now. Some days they barely get up. Some days they are fine, and you hold your breath. You have become the person who keeps the house, and them, running.

This page is about your side of that. It will not say what is going on inside your partner. That belongs with a doctor, not with a page.

Read the first section before anything else. Then read the rest, and notice how long it has been since anybody asked how you are.

    Before anything else

This goes first. If your partner talks about not wanting to be alive, gives things away, says goodbye in a way that scares you, or you are afraid to leave them alone, act on it today.

    In the United States:

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988, any hour. Confidential, and not only for the worst version of a night.

Crisis Text Line. Text HOME to 741741, if a call is the part you cannot do.

    Emergency services: 911.

You can call the Lifeline about somebody else, and that includes your partner. You do not need to be sure first.

The SAMHSA line is for the other question, where they can get care. It gives local options.

If none of that is where things are, looking still cost nothing. What follows assumes you have looked.

    What you are actually seeing

Your days have rearranged around their mood. You check on them before you check your messages. You cancel plans so they are not alone. You do the shopping, the bills, the calls, and the cheering.

Nobody decided this. It grew. And somewhere in it, you stopped being a partner and became a carer, without a handover and without a day off.

    Why it is emptying you

Because you are carrying two lives on one set of hours. Theirs, which needs more than usual. And yours, which has been put on hold so quietly you did not notice it go.

There is a second load on top. You watch for the bad day. That watching runs all the time, even when nothing is wrong. It is the most tiring part, and it is the part nobody counts.

You are not tired from one bad day. You are tired from waiting for the next one.

    What this is not about

It is not about whether you love them. Being emptied by someone you love is not a sign that the love has gone.

It is not selfish to be tired. A carer who runs dry cannot carry anyone.

And their recovery is not yours to deliver. What happens inside them runs in a body you are not in. Love and effort reach a long way. They do not reach that.

    What happens in your body

Notice what happens when you hear them sigh in the next room, or come home to a dark house. A weight across the shoulders. A drop in the chest. A pull to go and fix it.

    [MECHANISM]

That drop is the body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. It comes a few seconds before you act.

Those seconds are the window, the short space between the signal and what you do. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured rule.

What follows is your usual response. You drop what you were doing. You go in. You take their mood on as the next job.

Sometimes that is right. The pattern is when it happens every time, before you have chosen.

    What is in your control

Make sure their care has a clinician in it. You can be a partner. You cannot also be their doctor. Ask, in a calm hour, about seeing someone, and offer to book it.

Widen the circle. A friend, a sibling, a parent. Somebody else who checks in, so the whole load is not on one person.

Keep one thing that is yours. A walk, a class, an evening with a friend. Name it, and keep it even on a low week.

Find support for you. A carer needs a place to say how tired they are, and it cannot be the person they are caring for.

And one thing is not in your control: how fast they get better. No page can give you a timeline, and anybody who does is guessing.

    What it is costing you

Check what has changed. Whether you sleep badly. Whether you have stopped seeing your own friends. Whether you feel guilty on a good day, as if being well were a betrayal.

That guilt is the part with a door in it. It has a body signal you can learn to catch, and it is yours to work on.

Why is my partner's mental health draining me?

Because you have become the carer, the planner and the watcher at once, with no shift end. Their low stretch needs more than usual, and you have been supplying all of it. The drain is the load, not a failure of love. Write down this week who else helps. If the answer is nobody, that is the first thing to change.

Why is my girlfriend's mental health draining me?

The same load, often without the structure a marriage brings. You may live apart and still be on call. You may be the only person she tells. That makes you the whole circle, which no one person can be. Ask, in a calm hour, who else she can reach on a bad night. Then help her add one name.

If this is you rather than them

There is a file in this archive on The Draining Bond, the pattern where you stay in something that empties you and keep finding good reasons to. It is written about the reader, not the partner.

If you read this page and saw your own life on hold, that file may be yours. It is the one pattern in this house you can work on directly.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Draining Bond. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why is my partner's mental health draining me?

Because you have become the carer, the planner and the watcher at once, with no shift end. The drain is the load, not a failure of love.

Is it selfish to feel drained by my partner's low mood?

No. A carer who runs dry cannot carry anyone. Being tired is an accurate reading of a load, not a verdict on you.

Am I responsible for making my partner better?

No. What happens inside them runs in a body you are not in. Your part is making sure their care has a clinician in it and that you are not the whole circle.

What do I do if my partner talks about not wanting to be alive?

Act today. Use the routes in the box at the top of this page. You can call the Lifeline about somebody else, and you do not need to be sure first.

How do I get my partner to see someone?

Ask once, in a calm hour, and offer to book it. This page cannot make that decision for them, and it does not advise on clinical care. It can say the question belongs with a doctor.

What is the body signal when my partner has a bad day?

Often a weight across the shoulders, a drop in the chest, or a pull to go and fix it. It comes a few seconds before you act. Those seconds are where a choice fits.

Is it all right to keep doing things for myself?

Yes. Keep one thing that is yours and keep it even on a low week. It is not a betrayal. It is how you stay able to show up.

Who can I talk to about how tired I am?

Somebody who is not your partner. A friend, a sibling, a carers group, or someone you see for yourself. You need a place to say it out loud.

    Will my partner get better?

No page can say, and anybody who gives you a timeline is guessing. What you can know is whether their care has a clinician in it, and whether you still have a life of your own.

Why do I feel guilty on a good day?

Because the job you took on says the watching never stops. The guilt arrives on schedule. Guilt that shows up at a fixed point is part of the sequence, not a verdict on you.

    THE ARCHIVES

You cannot open their file. You can open yours, and it is the one that has been on hold. The assessment names it and costs nothing.

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
