Why does my mom call me every day?

Read this for yourself. Nothing here is for handing to the other person.

WRITTEN FOR THE PERSON STANDING NEXT TO IT

Your hand moves before the ringtone finishes. It is your mom. It was your mom yesterday, at about the same time. You answer, and twenty minutes later you are not sure what the call was for.

This page is about your side of that. It will not tell you what your mother is. That would be a verdict about someone who never opened a file here.

Notice where the page is pointed. Not at the dialing, which is hers. At the answering, which is yours. That is the only part of a daily call this archive can reach.

    What you are actually seeing

A call every day, sometimes several. A missed one followed by a second one, then a text asking if you are all right. If you do not call, she does.

The call itself is thin. What did you eat. The weather there. A neighbor you have never met. The upset when you do not answer is far bigger than anything said when you do.

And you have started asking whether it is rude not to pick up. That question is the tell. A call has turned into a toll, and you are checking whether you are allowed to stop paying it.

You have done the arithmetic on it. Twenty minutes, what is the harm. The arithmetic comes out the same way every time, and you are still tired after.

    Why the phone gets answered

This page cannot say why she dials. What the answered phone does for her, nobody on this side of it can see. What it can say is why you answer.

The pickup is a reflex, and it was set a long time ago. When a parent is upset, a child's body moves to settle it. That is older than any decision you make about your phone today.

So the call is thin because the call is not the point. The point is that it got answered. Twenty minutes of weather ends a feeling that started with the first ring, and the feeling is the thing being managed.

That is why the reasoning never settles it. You can prove on paper that the call costs nothing. The body that answered on the second ring was not consulted, and it is still tired.

You are not answering a call. You are answering a feeling, and it is not always yours.

    What this is not about

It is not about whether you love her. You do, and the pickup is partly made of that. Love is not the part that leaves you tired.

It is not about rudeness. Rude is a verdict about a single act. What you are describing is a sequence that runs every day, and a sequence is not settled by manners.

It is not fixed by a speech about how busy you are. The speech becomes the subject of the next call. It is not fixed by answering harder, either, because answering is the part that keeps it running.

It is not something you caused, and this page does not tell you to cut contact. The dialing is hers. The thumb on the green button is yours, and that is where the page stays.

    What happens in your body

Watch what happens in you when the phone lights up. A drop in the stomach. A small rehearsal of the apology. Guilt that arrives before you have decided anything at all.

    [MECHANISM]

That drop is the body signal, the first physical sign that your own pattern is starting. You feel it before you decide anything.

After it comes the window, the few seconds between the signal and your usual response. Three to seven seconds is a working figure, not a measured constant.

Then the usual response. Answering at once. Or declining, and calling back within the hour with an apology attached. Or answering and resenting every minute of it.

Each of those ends the feeling. That relief is what keeps the pickup running, which is why it has not changed in years of knowing better.

    What is in your control

Not the dialing. Not her upset when you do not pick up. What is yours is the pickup, and the apology, and the time of day you choose to be reachable.

    [FIELD ASSIGNMENT]

Catch: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. For you, that is the drop as the screen lights up.

Intercept: interrupt the usual response and choose a different action before the old pattern completes. Let it ring once, on purpose. Notice what happens in you while it rings.

Rewrite: repeat the different action until it becomes easier to reach when the signal returns. Each ring is one more chance to practice.

Choose the call instead of being chosen by it. Pick a time, say it once, and keep it. "I will call you Sunday at four." Then call on Sunday at four, and not on Tuesday because of the text.

Answer the are-you-all-right text with one line. I am fine, talk Sunday. Do not add the reason you did not pick up. The reason is where the apology sneaks back in.

Do not say sorry for being busy. You were busy. A sorry handed over for an ordinary afternoon is a toll, and tolls get collected again.

And decide while calm what you are available for, so that you already know it when the phone lights up at the worst moment and you are least able to decide anything.

    What it is costing you

Check what has changed in you. Whether a certain hour of the day comes with a knot in it. Whether you have lied about where you were, to make a missed call acceptable.

Whether the resentment has started leaking into the calls you do take, so that twenty minutes of weather now ends with you short and her hurt. Whether you have begun screening friends too.

Every one of those is a pattern with a file. The apology that arrives before anybody asked for it has a body signal so specific you can catch it, a few seconds before the word.

If this is you rather than them

Some people read this page and recognize the dialing rather than the pickup. The hand that reaches for the phone when the house goes quiet. The upset when it goes to voicemail.

If that just happened, there is a first-person file in this archive about staying tied to something that leaves you tired. It is written for the reader, about the reader's own body, and it is the one pattern on this page you can work on directly.

    THE FIRST-PERSON FILE

The shape described on this page is filed as The Draining Bond. That file is written in the second person, for whoever is running it, about their own body. It is not a verdict about anybody else, and nobody can read it on someone else's behalf.

If this is you rather than them: Why can't I leave a relationship that is draining me?

    Questions people ask about this

Why does my mom call me every day?

This page cannot say, and it will not guess. What it can say is why the phone gets answered: a reflex set long ago, when a parent being upset was something your body moved to settle. That reflex is the part you can reach.

Why does my mom get so upset when I do not answer her calls?

This page cannot see that from where you stand. What it can see is that the upset is far bigger than the call, which tells you the call was never the point. The pickup was.

Is it rude not to answer my parents' calls?

Rude is a verdict about one act, and this is a sequence that runs every day. Choose a time you can keep, say it once, and keep it. That is not rudeness. It is a schedule.

My parents expect me to call every day. How do I change that?

Not with a speech about how busy you are. The speech becomes the next call's subject. Pick a time, name it once, and then be reachable at that time and not at the others. Let the pattern meet a schedule instead of an argument.

Is it normal for parents to insist on talking every day?

This page gives no verdicts about normal. It can say that if the arithmetic keeps coming out fine and you keep being tired, the arithmetic is not the part that needs attention.

Should I just let it ring?

Once, on purpose, as practice. Let it ring and notice what happens in you while it does. That is the window where you can choose a different action, and it is the only place this changes.

What do I say when my mom asks why I did not pick up?

One line. I was busy, I am fine, we will talk Sunday. Do not add the reason, because the reason is where the apology sneaks back in, and the apology is a toll.

Why do I feel guilty for not answering a phone?

Because the guilt arrives before you have decided anything. It is the body signal, a drop in the stomach that comes a few seconds before you act. Guilt that beats your decision to the room is a signal, not a verdict.

    Is my mom lonely?

This page cannot see that, and it names nothing in anybody. If she is, a daily call to you is not the only answer to it, and you are not the only person who can provide one.

What is the body signal when the phone rings?

Often a drop in the stomach, a small rehearsal of the apology, or guilt that arrives before any decision. It comes a few seconds before your thumb moves. That gap is where you can choose a different action.

Should I tell my mom she calls too much?

Telling her tends to become the subject of the next call. What works better is a time, said once and kept. The change is in your schedule and your thumb, not in a conversation about her dialing.

Is it wrong to screen my own mother's calls?

That is a verdict, and this method does not give them. What is true is that answering every time ends a feeling for twenty minutes, and that relief is what keeps the pickup running. Choosing when to answer is not the same as refusing to.

    THE ARCHIVES

You cannot open her file. You can open yours. The assessment names the pattern that has been answering the phone for you, and it costs nothing.

9 PATTERNS  /  YOURS HAS A NAME  /  NO PAYMENT

The window is the gap between the first signal in your body and the behavior. Three to seven seconds is a working figure for that gap. It is drawn from what people report about their own sequences, not from a stopwatch in a laboratory. Some sequences run at the short end and some at the long, and the same person will find it varies. It is the scale you train toward after Catch. Catch is the first move: feel the body signal and name the pattern before it becomes the behavior. Your body is not obliged to keep to that number.
